Routing Policy for ATS downlinks

• Basically, whatever the aircraft type, ATS downlinks are sent using the comm. means with the following priority

1. VDL Mode 2 (if installed and available)

2. VDL Mode A (if available)

3. SATCOM (if installed and available)

4. HFDL (if installed and available)• Note: One of the 3 VDRs only can be used for data communications. VDL

Mode 2 and VDL Mode A are exclusive modes. VDL Mode 2 establishment is favored when available.

• A380 operators can request a customized Routing Policy for ATS downlinks (e.g. SATCOM preferred to VDL, even under VHF coverage)

• Not available for A320 and A330/A340 operators

Next On Busy function

• When a downlink ATC message sending is triggered, one of the communication means may be busy sending a previous ATC message or an AOC message.

• ACARS router then automatically select the next comm. means in the Routing Policy• Under VHF coverage, even though VDL Mode 2 is established and

running, in some cases, an ATC downlink message may be sent using SATCOM if the VDL2 is being used for sending another message.

• Out of VHF coverage, even though SATCOM is established and running, in some cases, an ATC downlink message may be sent using HFDL if the SATCOM is being used for sending another message.

VDL Modes management

• In order to determine which VDL service is available in the flown area, aircraft use a combination of1. DSP Worldmap : geographical depiction of CSP coverage around

the globe (VDL Mode 2 and VDL Mode A)

2. VHF Scanmask : static airline preference in term of CSP, depending on commercial agreements

Note: both sets of information are contained in DataBases that can be upgraded without requiring new certification of the avionics suite

Note: VDL management is common for AOC and ATS communications

• For most Airbus aircraft, VDL Mode 2 can be established only if the CSP is also providing VDL Mode A service in the region
