Pearl A. Dale and Audrey Parker Scholarship FundEducation was the key to helping Dayton Foundation donor Pearl Dale and her siblings overcome the odds stacked against them as African-Americans in the early 1900s. Today, her fund is paying her good graces forward by ensuring that financial struggles don’t hinder Dayton-area students from achieving their dreams of pursuing higher education. The scholarship is awarded to African-American high school seniors in the Dayton Region who plan to attend an accredited college or university.

The Waverly Glover Scholarship FundAfter serving in World War II, Waverly Glover took advantage of the G.I. Bill and went to college, graduating with an accounting degree from Central State University. Mr. Glover’s career spanned 36 years, and he used his talents in many notable positions, including serving as finance director and assistant city manager for the City of Springfield.

Today, The Waverly Glover Scholarship Fund pays it forward by assisting African-American students in pursuing a business or accounting degree at Central State or Wilberforce Universities.

Golden Thirteen Naval Scholarship Fund In 1944, the Navy commissioned its first 13 black officers, revered as the Golden Thirteen because of the gold shoulder bars on their uniforms. While they endured many challenges, they persevered and opened new doors for future generations.

Today the legacy of these honorable men lives on through the Golden Thirteen Naval Scholarship Fund established through the African-American Community Fund of The Dayton Foundation. Scholarships are awarded annually on a rotating basis to R.O.T.C. students enrolled in one of the six traditionally black colleges operating Naval R.O.T.C.

The Major John F. Harris, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund Major John Harris, Jr., was an instructor at Grace A. Greene Military Academy with a strong desire to help students become independent and self-supporting.

The Major John F. Harris, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund affords Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps graduates from Dayton Public Schools the chance to further their education at an institute of higher learning. Students should be able to demonstrate leadership skills through exemplary participation in school and community activities.

C.J. McLin, Jr., Scholarship Fund C. J. McLin, Jr., was one of Ohio’s most influential politicians. As a strong community leader, McLin’s philosophy was rooted in a sincere belief in the importance of community involvement. He is credited with helping to advance countless individuals in local and statewide civic roles. In honor of his legacy, the C.J. McLin, Jr., Scholarship Fund awards scholarships annually to students attending Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU) in the United States.

Paul R. and Frieda M. Miller Memorial Scholarship FundPaul and Frieda Miller graduated from historically Black institutions and became educators in the Dayton area. The Millers, who came from rural communities, found that education and hard work are the keys to successful careers and lives. Their legacy is to provide the opportunity for others to become educated and successful.

The scholarship enables a deserving student, who is of good moral character, to attend an accredited college to pursue an education in teaching. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, be a Dayton Public School graduate, be accepted to a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and plan to major in Education.

The Scott Neal Simpson Scholarship FundA Jefferson Township High School graduate, Scott Neal Simpson was a dedicated student, gifted athlete and active in his church. Sadly, this promising life was cut short when Scott passed away after lapsing into a diabetic coma while in his sophomore year at The Ohio State University.

To honor their son’s memory, Dora and Willie Simpson (pictured above with a 2014-15 scholarship recipient) established the Scott Neal Simpson Scholarship in 1999. Applicants must be Montgomery County high school graduates attending an accredited college or university and must have participated in organized high school sports.

Trotwood-Madison Education Foundation ScholarshipThe Trotwood-Madison Foundation established the Trotwood-Madison Education Foundation Scholarship in 2001 with the intent of encouraging students in Trotwood to pursue a planned program of training or learning following graduation.

This scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors at Trotwood-Madison High School who demonstrate a successful academic record from their freshman to junior year and display qualities of leadership and involvement.

Twentig Incorporated Endowment Fund (Willis “Bing” Davis Scholarship)Greater Dayton is fortunate to have a world-renowned artist, educator, arts advocate and community servant in Willis “Bing” Davis. A product of the Dayton Public Schools, Bing Davis has had works exhibited in private and public collections in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, South Africa, England, West Africa and Russia.

To pay tribute to him, Twentig, Inc., a volunteer women’s organization, created the Twentig Incorporated Endowment Fund (Willis “Bing” Davis Scholarship) through the African-American Community Fund of The Dayton Foundation. The fund provides scholarships and encourages students to pursue a degree in the arts, especially visual arts.

Dr. Yvonne Walker-Taylor Women for Women Scholarship Fund IIDescribed as a trailblazer and innovator, Dr. Yvonne Walker-Taylor was taught the importance of education from an early age. She broke many barriers throughout her life, including becoming the first female president of Wilberforce University.

The Dr. Yvonne Walker-Taylor Women for Women Scholarship Fund II was established by Wilberforce University in memory of Dr. Walker-Taylor and honors her accomplishments and passion for education. Applicants must be female and attend Wilberforce University as a full-time student.

Award Amount: $1,000
