Active Voice

Active voice occurs when the subject of a sentence performs the action.For example: “In the end, Okonkwo threw the Cat.” Okonkwo performs the action of throwing. Other examples:

◦Sarah went to the store. ◦The boy dropped his ID card. ◦They bought a puppy. ◦Bailey stole the cake.

Passive Voice Passive voice is when the subject of the sentence receives the action.

For example: The Cat was thrown by Okonkwo.

Other examples:

◦The store was bought by Wal-Mart.

◦The ID card was dropped by the boy.

◦The puppy was bought by a nice boy.

◦The cake was stolen by Ivan.

HINT: “to be” forms of verbs are a clue that he sentence is written in passive voice!
