Background
• The Lake Naivasha basin area is approximately 3,400 km2
• Lake Naivasha itself is an endorheic shallow freshwater lake with a water surface elevation of approximately 1890masl
• It is situated in the Eastern Rift Valley of Kenya, Lake Naivasha is one of a series of seven major lakes in the Eastern Rift Valley of Kenya
Location of Lake Naivasha
Major Landscape issues in the basin
• Water & Sanitation for urban & peri-urban population
• Unregulated water abstractions especially for large scale use
• Alienation of rural poor, access rights, resource ownership &
governance issues.
• Uneven distribution of natural resource based economic
opportunities
• Un-sustainable exploitation of natural resources.
• Catchment degradation, poor farming practice
• Pollution
• Ecological transformation in the basin
Major Landscape issues in the basin .. contd
• Policy matters (investment & trade, environmental mgt)
• Conflicting upstream & downstream interests
• Power asymmetry among stakeholders
• Weak enforcement of environmental laws & regulations
• Impact: serious decline in water resource (abstraction, habitat degradation, climate change impact)
Objective of the project
• Enhance the Integrated Management Plan
process for the Lake Naivasha Basin through a
consultative process towards establishing a
mechanism for mitigating environmental
degradation within the Lake Naivasha Basin
Whole purpose of project • Previous plans were rejected!!!
• Get everyone to work together
• Background to issues & interests
• Create a common language
• Not intended to solve all conflict, just to make sure you are arguing about the same thing!
Why Integrated Management Plan ?
IMP is a process that recognizes the basin as the appropriate organizing unit for understanding & managing ecosystem
processes…
- in a context that includes social, economic & political considerations, &
- guides communities towards an agreed vision of sustainable land & water resource management for their
basin
Steps followed in the development of the Lake Naivasha Basin Integrated
Management plan - 1
1. Situational analysis a. review of other existing documents on lake Naivasha e.g sub
catchment management plans & other plans-LNRA had started the process from where we picked & added more information
b. fact finding & gathering of views from stakeholders through field visits to various location & holding of discussion with the stakeholders
c. stakeholders analysis to ensure all stakeholders were involved in the process
Steps followed in the development of the Lake Naivasha Basin Integrated
Management plan -2
2. Multi stakeholder consultative workshop - held several
workshops with a view to getting information about the basin
& the provide opportunity for the stakeholders to present their
views & identify issues & strategies to address the issues
within the
2. Synthesis of information gathered - all the views gathered by stakeholders in the field & through workshop was compiled
by the technical team for the purpose of drafting the plan

Management plan -3
4. Drafting of the Integrated management plan
5. Validation of the Plan - A validation workshop
6. Adoption of the plan - workshop held to adopt the plan through which the stakeholders
7. Endorsement of the final draft of the Plan stakeholders forum
8. Followed by ratification by the appropriate Minister on behalf of Government
9. Publication for Circulation
Evaluate IM Plan options • IMP tried to developed practical ideas that meet the
local, national & international needs
• Some key considerations; the Plan tried to contribute to:
– Reducing poverty
– Addressing water scarcity & competition for water
– Improving the situation of women & other vulnerable groups
– Protecting ecosystems
– Maintaining human health
– Sustaining economic development including local livelihoods
Structure of the Plan
• The Integrated Management planning Process
– towards sustainable management and utilization of natural resources in
the Lake Naivasha Basin
• The integrated plan is envisaged to provide a framework to
balance the diverse resource use interests & related conflicts, &
enhancing stakeholder partnerships & capacities in natural
resources management
Management Plan structure 8 Chapters
Chapter One Introduction and Background to Lake Naivasha Basin, and the plan
Chapter Two Description of the Lake Naivasha Basin and an inventory of the resources and
