David GrismanMUSIC FROM

In the fall of 1974 I was asked to compose the music for the film Capone, based on the life and times of Al Capone, one of America’s most infamous characters. It was my second score for producer Roger Corman, the “Pope of Pop Cinema”. This true-life gangster period piece, set in Chicago during the “Roaring 20s” proved to be a great vehicle for the mandolin and many of the ideas already percolating in my composing wheelhouse. The chord structure for “Minor Car Chase Swing” laid the foundation for my arrangement of the Reinhardt/Grappelli classic, “Minor Swing” which I would record a year later in the same studio. “O’Banion’s Wake” underscoring the funeral of Dean O’Banion, Al Capone’s gangster rival, ultimately found its’ way into my quintet’s repertoire (Dawg ’90), as did the Capone theme itself, which we performed at our very first concert in January, 1976 (DGQ 20). Also included are excerpts from “Potpourri” composed by my friend and mentor in Italian music, Rudy Cipolla. It may be heard in its’ entirety on his LP, The World of Rudy Cipolla, which I produced when Rudy was only 83! Now, 46 years later, I’m happy to make this music available in its entirety. I hope you enjoy this trip back in time to the world of Al Capone!
