______________________________ Winter Parties (12/21) Will Not Be Rescheduled
The winter parties will not be made up in January. If parents have prepped activities or have treats for students, they may be sent to school and sent home with students. This protocol has been followed in the past with inclement weather and will be the case this year for Shuler and the other
elementary schools. Thank you to those who volunteered!

Science + Art Fair Informational Packet
• Schedule of Science Fair Date: February 7, 2013 • Setup Time: 5:30-‐6:00 • Judging for 5th Grade: 6:00-‐6:30 • Event Time: 6:00-‐7:00 • Awards Ceremony: 7:00 – 7:10 • Tear Down: 7:15
• Location: Shuler Cafeteria • Preparatory Work for Fair All work will be completed outside of class. There will be no classroom time devoted to working on your project or presentation. This year, K-‐4 students may choose to participate individually, or with one or two friends, in a group. Grade 5 projects must be done individually.
• Format of Presentation: All presentations will be completed on a 3-‐section display board. These boards can be purchased at Target, Walgreens, Home Depot and many other locations for a cost < $10. The student/team can write directly on the board or attach pieces of paper to it. • Minimum Requirements for K-4 Presentations:
Title of Project Participant(s) and grade level What the participant(s) learned
6. Minimum Requirements for Grade 5 Presentations (all of K-4 requirements plus the following): · choose or make up an experiment by forming a question to answer · create a standard or basic procedure before experimenting · create a controlled experiment, where only one variable is changed at a time · conduct the experiment at least three times · keep track of results in a chart · graph the results showing the independent variable as the x-‐axis (what I
learned) and the dependent variable as the y-‐axis (outcome) 7. Expectations the night of the Science Fair
A parent should plan on helping their child/team set their presentation up in the cafeteria during the setup time. The participants will need to be prepared to discuss their work with Fair attendees. Participants, parents and others will have the opportunity to walk around and discuss the presentations with the participants. It does not have to be a formal presentation. They need to be able to answer questions about their work, if asked. This is not a big deal, it is very conversational and not meant to be intimidating. Just have fun with it and enjoy yourself!
8. Recognition
· All participants will receive medals · 5th Graders will be judged for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Each place will receive a
ribbon. 9. Sources for projects The internet and your local library are great sources for project ideas and information. 10. Needs:
