PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Student Achievement
Congratulations to Jack Robertson (Year 7, Andrew House) who in late April represented Eltham High School in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) Diving Championships. Jack performed admirably coming first in the regional event and then following through into the State event and coming third in the final. Similarly Elliot Spotswood (Year 7, Stewart House) represented our school in the same event, coming fourth in the final. A great effort! I congratulate Amity MacDonald (Year 7, Stewart House) who also achieved positive results in this event as well as all the other students who took part in these competitions. This is a great effort on the part of all the students and I commend them for their efforts.
Congratulations to Joel Taylor (Year 11, Everard House) who will be competing in the Gold Coast this week for an Australian Junior Boxing Title, 63Kg division. Joel won the Victorian Title last year as was also awarded the title of “Junior Boxer of the Year”.
Joel will be travelling this week with the Victorian State Team. If he wins the Championship bout this weekend he will be eligible for Commonwealth Games selection.
I wish Joel all the very best as he engages with the sport as well as with the championship bout.
Eltham Music
Congratulations to Monty Mackenzie and the Jazz Band for winning their division at the Generations in Jazz National Stage Band Awards in Mount Gambier. This is a huge achievement considering there were 5000 musicians from over 200 schools competing in 5 divisions over the weekend. To win it once is incredible, but to win it 2 years in a row is an amazing achievement.

SCHOOL CALENDAR
Our students worked hard for this, and the support that they gained from their director/conductor was outstanding.
All our ensembles had a great weekend and we are very proud of their performances. Both Stage Band and Junior Jazz Band finished higher in their divisions than they did in 2015.
The Jazz Band Trombone Section were also awarded best Trombone Section in Division 3. Congratulations to Jack Harrison, Peter Judd, Jade Gregg and Nathan Wall!
Stage Band finished 6th.
Junior Jazz Band finished 6th.
There were also some great personal achievements with some students being recognised for their outstanding individual performances. Division 1 to 3 have a Super Band, which is created form all of the best players from each band in the division. This year we had the following students selected:
Div. 3 Super Band (Jazz Band):
Alto 1: Noah Raz
Trumpet 1: Steve Burgess
Trumpet 2: Joe Alberti
Piano: Jes Broeren
Div. 1 Super Band (Stage Band)
Trumpet 4: Matt Yates
Trombone 3: James Farrough
Tobi Azeez was selected as a Future Finalist for his incredible solo features with the Stage Band. James Morrison selects the most outstanding soloists from Division 1 to perform with him on stage at the festival.
Our Alumni were also on display over the weekend. Scott van Gemert (Class of 2013) was featured as a composer, writing music for the James Morrison Academy Band & One O’Clock Lab Band (from North Texas) to perform in the major concerts at the festival. It is great to see just how far Scott has come since moving to Mt. Gambier to study with James Morrison at his academy.
I take this opportunity to thank all the staff that travelled to Mt Gambier with our students. Without their commitment and passion such opportunities would not be possible. I also wish to thank all the staff for their consistent support of our students by making adjustments to students’ programs in order to enable them to engage with their music.
Feedback indicates that whilst the weekend was full of hard work it was enjoyed by all.
School/Community Sport Precinct
Further to the information that I posted last week, I wish to inform you that we have engaged the support of consultant Kate Maddock from the OTIUM Planning Group to support us with the planning phase of this initiative. Kate comes highly recommended having being involved in the development of Master Plans for a number of projects in the Nillumbik shire including the current redevelopment of the Eltham Leisure Centre. We are looking forward to Kate’s engagement and support of our group to move the agenda forward.
I will keep you informed as our work progresses.

COMMUNITY NEWS3
Drop off and Pick up zones
I take this opportunity to remind parents about student safety during drop off and pick times of the day. I ask that you do not drop students off outside of the front entrance to the driveway on Withers Way. This is very dangerous and causes a standstill in traffic from both directions. This causes a level of frustration in drivers, potentially resulting in them making poor decisions and hence increasing the risk of danger for our students.
If you drive students to school the best scenario is to have a drop off place near to the school but away from the main entrances to the school that you can drop students off and pick them up from. If you decide to drop students off at the front of the school, please drive through the driveway and drop students off at the front of the administration building. Traffic through this area flows well if everyone does the right thing and maintains a level of patience. Please do not drop students off at the corner of the driveway at either the entrance or exit.
I inform you that over past weeks the Ranger has been in the vicinity of the school and a number of people have received fines for what has been considered illegal/dangerous driving/ parking.
The overall consideration of this is student safety and I thank you in anticipation for your support.
VINCENT SICARI, Principal
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Student Free Day
A reminder to students and families that this Friday is a scheduled student free day set aside for staff professional learning. There will be two key focus areas for this day: The first is Student Well-being and the second is Assessment and Reporting.
During the key-note presentation all staff will be hearing from Hugh van Cuylenburg the founder and director of The Ressiliance Project (theresilienceproject.com.au) This presentation as well as a follow up session facilitated by Hugh will assist us in considering as a school how we can colletively improve student resilience and wellbeing.
Following this staff will be working in teams to continue planning for progressive reporting during Semester Two. I look forward to reporting back to families on progress made and insights gained throughout the day.

Students who are absent on the day of a scheduled SAC/SAT are reminded that the redemption must occur within ONE week of a student’s return to school.

A medical certificate is required dated on the day of the absence for students to be eligible for a scored assessment (this includes absence from a redemption session that is being scored).
NOTE: All SACs/SATs are returned to class teachers after one week. If a student has not attended the restoration session within this time frame the assessment remains ‘pending’ with the teacher and coordinator needing to cite further medical documentation to explain non-completion of the task within one week.
The final date for Unit 3 SAC/SAT redemption will be Monday 6 June, 2016.

CAREERS
New Eltham High Careers Website
At Eltham High School Pathways and Transition is an important part of your child’s educational experience.
As such I would like to announce the creation of an Eltham High School web based career support site.
It can be accessed at www.elthamhighcareers.com with the majority of menu links open access. However, there is also a dedicated student area where your child can create an account and take advantage of various activities and production tasks. In there you will find interest and occupations quizzes, a resume format, digital portfolio access and many more useful tools. When your child creates their account have them use their school email address and a password will be generated for them.
The site has information for all year levels with the full functionality of the site becoming more appropriate as students move into Year 9. The student account remains accessible across the life of your child’s high school life.
I would encourage you to have a look at the site and if there are any questions regarding its use please feel free to conatct me on 9430 5113 or at [email protected]
