What many people don't know is that tortellini is also legendary...literally.A legend from Emilia claims Venus, the goddess of love, once stayed at an inn in Castelfranco. The innkeeper, overcome by her beauty, spied on her through a keyhole and was inspired to create tortellini to pay homage to her beauty—pasta in the shape of her navel! #ltalyathlome

What do chocolate and a 19th century Italian theater character have in common? As it turns out, the similar-sounding names of gianduiotto (a type of chocolate that originated in Piedmont in 1852) and Gianduja (a "mask" of an honest peasant who handed out chocolate to local citizens in the streets of Turin) are more than a coincidence. The process for preparing the chocolate and hazelnut is called gianduja in his honor, and the shape of the gianduiotto was inspired by Gianduja's hat.Another fun fact: gianduiotto was the first chocolate in the world to be individually wrapped!

Italians were responsible for some of the most famous designs in the

U.S. Capitol. Two of them can be found in the Capitol Rotunda: the

Apotheosis of George Washington in the dome and the Frieze of

American History, which contains allegorical scenes from American

history.

These works, along with many other sections of the building, were

painted by Constantino Brumidi. Perhaps most notable are the hallways

in the Senate side of the Capitol, which are known as the Brumidi

Corridors in his honor! #ltalyUS160

Dante's exile has come to be a staple of his story; it was during this exile that he wrote the Divine Comedy. Many historians have speculated whether all of literary history would be different if he had not been exiled in 1302.

To commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante's death, his ancestor, along with a descendant of Cante de Gabrielli da Gubbio, the Florentine official who convicted Dante, are revisiting his trial to ask that very question. They will be debating if Dante’s sentence was just or if it was simply an abuse of political power.

One of the greatest biographies of Dante comes from famed Italian historian Alessandro Barbero. Barbero follows Dante from his upbringing as a usurer's son who dreams of belonging to the world of nobles and writers, explores his political aspirations and downfalls, and paints a nuanced portrait of the man himself in all his complexity. TODAY, @IICSanFrancisco and @ltalyinSanFran are hosting a discussion by Barbero. Don't miss your chance to learn more about the father of the Italian langauge! [LINK]

Did you know that after the Roman Empire fell, the olive oil industry was almost destroyed? It survived because of its importance in Italian religious communities. Olive oil was sacred to many Catholic services and traditions, and Italian Catholics worked to continue cultivating the olive oil industry until it was once again booming. Can you imagine a world without olive oil?
