Celebrate theStars and
StripesThe first Flag Act
was passed June 14,1777, to dictate thatthe United Statesflag be made of13 alternating redand white stripes and13 white stars on ablue background.Today, much of thecountry observesFlag Day on June 14.
Legend maintainsthat Betsy Ross, aseamstress fromPhiladelphia, madethe first U.S. flag, but it was likelyCongressmanFrancis Hopkinsonwho designed it.
Since the GreatSeal was created in1782, the flag’scolors hold specialmeaning: Whiterepresents purityand innocence, redsymbolizes hardinessand valor, and bluestands for vigilance, perseveranceand justice.
The publicfascination with theflag as a patrioticsymbol came aboutduring the Civil War.

Why Do We ForgetThings Midway?
Submitted by: Rosemary S.If you happen to forget what you
were going to do after entering aroom, blame it on the doorway, saysa recent study conducted by theUniversity of Notre Dame. Entering orexiting doorways results in an “eventboundary,” which breaks the mentalassociation between activities. Theexperiment was conducted byprofessor Gabriel Radanksky, whoasked his participants to performmemory tasks where it was foundthat doorways act as eventboundaries which prevent peoplefrom remembering their thoughts anddecisions made in a different room.
