Rev 1.1 - 05 April 2012
INTRODUCTIONNewton 403 HydroBond is a very high performance composite sheet membrane that features a locking fleece to one side and a polymer hydrophilic coating to the other. When placed below the new raft or against the wall shuttering, the Newton 403 HydroBond fibres are encapsulated into the concrete forming a close and intimate bond. The membrane becomes fully engaged into the concrete to prevent water tracking.
The hydrophilic coating expands by approximately 250% when in contact with water and seals small holes that may be accidentally formed during fixing of the reinforcing steel or the pouring and compaction of the concrete.
Newton 403 HydroBond is applied as an external barrier to water ingress to provide Type A (barrier) waterproofing as defined by BS8102:2009 and can be applied to the blinding and shuttering prior to the concrete pour of raft foundation structures or post-construction to the retaining walls.
All below ground and earth retained structures, ranging from domestic basements to the largest civil engineering projects, can be waterproofed with Newton 403 HydroBond.
KEY BENEFITS• Full mechanical bond to concrete prevents water
migration between membrane and structure.• Hydrophilic coating provides self healing of punctures to
the membrane.• Very flexible - Resistant to movement and fissures in
substrates.• Two roll sizes for quick installation and fewer joints.• Suitable for both under the raft and to the walls.• Excellent resistance to the high alkalinity of concrete.
NEWTON 403 HYDROBONDExternally Applied Waterproofing Membrane
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS As a continuous membrane to the underside of the raft and the outside of the walls to reinforced concrete earth retained structures.
SUITABLE SUBSTRATEPre-construction prior to concrete pour:• Concrete blinding.• Clay Heave Boards.• Permanent and removable formwork.• Rigid insulation.• Newton 410 Geodrain drainage membrane.• Adjacent substructures.
Post-construction:• Reinforced concrete or concrete block retained walls.
Newton 403 HydroBond provides a complete waterproof envelope to the structure to provide a Type A (barrier) waterproofing solution suitable for Grades 1, 2 and 3 as defined by BS8012:2009. Newton 403 HydroBond can be used with other Newton products to provide a co-ordinated and combined approach to the waterproofing of the structure that includes protection against water ingress to the deck, through construction joints, through and around service entries and to movement joints.

NEWTON 403 HYDROBONDExternally Applied Waterproofing Membrane DATA SHEET
SPECIFICATIONJohn Newton & Company are in partnership with RIBA NBS who publish details of our products and systems within their specification clause library to allow Architects ease of specification through their NBS Plus interface. NBS clauses can be accessed via the technical resources area of the web site where a live NBS Feed is available at http://newton-membranes.co.uk/nbs-plus-live-feed
Our web site has drawings available for download at http://newton-membranes.co.uk/technical-drawings and a selection are also available via FastrackCad at http://www.fastrackcad.com/CAD.ASP?Company_id=251
TOOLS REQUIRED No special tools are required.
TRAINING & COMPETENCY OF USERNewton 403 HydroBond should be used by those with an understanding of the requirement to waterproof retained structures and the knowledge and training to use the product as part of a coordinated approach to the waterproofing of the structure, which in many cases will require further waterproofing products so as to achieve the required habitable grade as defined by BS8102:2009.
CONSTRUCTIONThe construction should conform with current Building Regulations, British Standards and relevant Codes of Practice.
New concrete should be designed by a Structural Engineer to EN 1992 (Formally BS8110 & BS8007). A shuttered finish to vertical surfaces is suitable where Newton 403 HydroBond is applied post-construction.
SURFACE PREPARATION Newton 403 HydroBond can be installed in two very different ways:
Pre-constructionThe product is installed to the blinding prior to the pouring of the concrete raft and then to the inside of the shuttering prior to the pouring of the concrete walls.
Post-constructionThe product is applied to the outside of the concrete retaining walls after the shuttering has been removed.
PRE-CONSTRUCTION - RAFT
Formwork is required to define the extent of the concrete pour. The formwork should extend up to at least the depth of the slab or the kicker (if used and to the perimeter of the raft foundation).
The product is laid above a sound and well compacted base, preferably a concrete blinding. At a minimum, the base should not deform due to the weight of the reinforcement steel passing through the reinforcement support stools.
The compacted base or concrete blinding should be free of sharp protrusions. Remove standing water. Clean the blinding just prior to installation.
PRE-CONSTRUCTION - WALL SHUTTERING
The wall shuttering should be uniform with tight joints and no sharp protrusions or edges.
POST-CONSTRUCTION - WALLS
The retained walls should be structurally stable, clean, dry and free from release agents, dust, laitance, oils, paints or other forms of contamination. Grit blasting or jet washing can be used to remove laitance and surface contamination. Adding mild detergents to the jet wash water will improve effectiveness.
• Holes or indentations greater than 12mm should be filled with a suitable concrete repair product.
• Deep or structural cracks should be inspected to confirm if they are live or dormant. Suitable repair by qualified personnel is recommended.
INSTALLATION - PRE-CONSTRUCTION The membrane is placed within the ‘tank’ formed by the base and the shuttering with the fleece side facing the applicator. When the concrete to the raft is poured and the wall shuttering is in place, the membrane is fixed to the inside of the shutters ready for the wall concrete pour. Joints are overlapped by 100mm and sealed by removing the protective film to expose the adhesive edge of the membrane. Where no adhesive edge is available, the joint is sealed with Newton HydroBond Tape.

INSTALLATION - POST-CONSTRUCTION Newton 403 HydroBond is applied to the outside of the retaining wall with the fleece facing the applicator. The membrane is adhered to the surface with HydroBond Adhesive. Joints are overlapped by 100mm and sealed by removing the protective film to expose the adhesive edge of the membrane. Where no adhesive edge is available, the joint is sealed with Newton HydroBond Tape.
For full installation instructions, please refer to the Newton 403 HydroBond Installation Instructions that are supplied with the product and are available on our website.
DRAINAGE - OPTIONALThe waterproofing system can be further enhanced with the addition of Newton 410 Geodrain.
Newton 410 Geodrain is a two-core drainage sheet consisting of a non-woven geotextile filter layer thermally welded to a water impermeable HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) drainage membrane. Newton 410 Geodrain provides outstanding drainage and protection to the outside face of basement walls, preventing the build-up of water pressure and protecting the structure from aggressive water, chemicals and toxins.
For further information, please see the Newton 410 Geodrain Data sheet.
PACKAGINGRolls of 1.0m x 20.0m or 2.0m x 10.0m.
STORAGEStore in dry conditions at temperatures between 5°Cand 25°C. Do not expose to freezing conditions. Newton 403 HydroBond has a 12 month shelf life when stored in original, unopened containers in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
