"Sandstorm" is a 1999 trance musical composition by Finnish trance DJ Darude.[3] It was initially released in Finland on 15 November 1999 by 16 Inch Records and it waseventually re-released in many other countries in 2000. The song was uploaded to mp3.com where it gained global recognition. It has also gained recognition for its usage insports and popularity in internet meme culture. On 1 March 2010, over ten years after its original release, "Sandstorm" was certified Gold in the United States by theRecording Industry Association of America for sales of over 500,000 copies.[4]

Background [edit]

Darude first started making happy hardcore music with a music tracker program on his computer, playing gigs as "Rudeboy".[5] He then performed with Wille "Weirdness"Heikkilä as "Position 1", making light Eurodance tunes, and he paired with other DJs on other projects. In September–October 1999[5] as Darude he began collaborating withJaakko "JS16" Salovaara, known as the producer of the Bomfunk MC's.[6] "Sandstorm" was the first product of the collaboration, ready after about a week of work. JS16 signedDarude as the first artist on JS16's new label 16 Inch Records.[5]

Darude had been uploading various pieces of his trance experimentation on the website mp3.com, where he was building a following, and he also uploaded the full-lengthdemo of "Sandstorm". This exposure was responsible for worldwide interest in "Sandstorm".[7] In 2000, Darude reported on his mp3.com artist's page that he had "removed thefull-length tracks" of "Sandstorm" at the request of his record company.[8]

Composition [edit]

"Sandstorm" was composed by Darude and arranged by Darude and Jaakko Sakari Salovaara, featuring no lyrics in it.[9] According to music critics, it is a trancecomposition.[1][10] According to Darude, the hardware and software used to make the track are as follows: P2, Cubase VST 32, Fast Tracker 2, ReBirth, Korg TR-Rack. Thenwith JS16 in his studio: Cubase on Atari ST1024, Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler, Roland JP8080, NordLead2, Roland JV2080, Ensoniq DP4, Mackie 24/8, Behringer rackcompressor.[11]

Music video [edit]

The video for "Sandstorm" features Darude with headphones viewing two security guards (a man and a woman) chasing a woman with a case. It was filmed at Helsinki Senate Square. Darude seems to appear at everyplace the pursuers and the pursued go. Near the end, the woman with the case stumbles and one of her pursuers (the other woman) betrays her partner, knocking him out. The two women take the case onto a boat withDarude. An unofficially-uploaded version of the music video was uploaded on YouTube on 5 March 2006 and has garnered over 44 million views,[12] while the officially-uploaded version on Darude's Vevo channel hasgarnered over 12 million views.[13]

In film and television [edit]

"Sandstorm" appeared on the pilot episode of popular Showtime series Queer as Folk, which first aired on December 3, 2000.[14] The song has appeared in the comedy movie (2005 remake) Fun with Dick and Jane, aswell as in the 2013 drama film Filth. Still in 2013, it also appeared in Under the Skin (in the discothèque scene). On a Finnish TV-show called "Far Out" two contestants named Tatu and Eeka travelled to Budapest wheretheir assignment was to play music with gypsies. They ended up with making their own version of Sandstorm called "Sandström" together with two Hungarian musicians.[15]

In sports [edit]

In October 2006, "Sandstorm" was played for the first time at the University of South Carolina Williams-Brice Stadium during a Gamecocks American football game. It became a rallying anthem.[16][17]

Professional wrestler Toru Owashi and Adam Garcia,[18] mixed martial artist Wanderlei Silva, and Boston Red Sox pitcher Koji Uehara use "Sandstorm" as entrance music. It was also played at the 2006 Winter Olympics,and during the Ice Hockey World Championships. Nike used the composition in an advertisement series featuring the basketball opponents Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.[7] The song was also used as the theme for thefinals parade at the 2011 British Judo Championships (Pre Cadet and Cadet) held in Sheffield, England. Cambridge United FC use Sandstorm as the music that plays when the teams come out onto the field of playbefore the match begins.

Internet phenomenon [edit]

The song has been popular since its release, but its visibility online increased sharply in 2010 after a YouTube video was posted of a college student playing the song on a toy trumpet.[2][dubious – discuss]

In July 2013, professional League of Legends player and internet personality Brian "TheOddOne" Wyllie scored a Quadra-Kill (a feat which requires killing 4 out of the 5 opposing team's players in quick succession) whilebroadcasting on the popular video game live-streaming site Twitch.tv, and attributed the successful Quadra-Kill to the fact that "Sandstorm" was playing in the background.[19] Shortly after, interest in "Sandstorm"increased significantly.[20] Users of Twitch.tv then began replying with "Darude - Sandstorm" every time the currently playing song's name was asked in the live-stream's chat, a phenomenon which quickly spread withinTwitch.tv, and then to the popular video sharing site YouTube and the wider internet.[2]

Various videos and live streams of "Sandstorm" had gathered some 60 million hits by December 2014.[2]

As an April Fools' Day joke, on April 1, 2015 YouTube displayed the message "Did you mean: Darude – Sandstorm by Darude" for all video search queries involving music, in addition to adding a button which played thetune during a video.[21][22]

The Republic of Singapore Air Force display team, the Black Knights, use 'Sandstorm' when performing at airshows.

Soon after release, "Sandstorm" became popular on pop radio stations, reaching No. 1 in Norway.[23] Its sales worldwide eventually reached 2 million, and it was featured on 200 techno/trance compilations.[7]
