Food abundance, but also food scarcity can lead to malnutrition, deficiencies, pathologies...Anecdotes:Malnutrition and non-infectious pathologies may coexist in a same country, and ever in a same family.Obesity concerns 300 million people in the world, according to the WHO, and can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.Diabete Mellitus (type II) should have doubled by 2030, reaching 360 million people (WHO).Cardiovascular diseases kill 17 million people each year (WHO).Malunutrition: 923 million undernourished in 2007 (FAO).

Some information on some products of the chart:Growth:- Blédilait 2ème âge: infant formula (liquid or powder form) for children aged from up to 6 months in France.Faltering growth:- Infatrini: food for special medical purpose for use under medical supervision. It is a nutritionally complete, energy dense, ready to use feed for the dietary management of infants (from birth up to 18 months or 8 kg in body weight) with faltering growth.- Nutrini: food for special medical purposes for use under medical supervision. It is a nutritionally complete 1 kcal/ml tube feed for the dietary management of disease related malnutrition in children aged 1-6 years or 8-20 lg in body weight.Metabolic control:- PKU Anamix: an amino acid based phenylalanine-free powdered infant formula for the dietary management of infants with phenylketonuria (PKU, a genetic disorder in which the body can't process phenylalanine (Phe), an aminoacid present in almost foods. If the Phe level gets too high, it can damage the brain and cause severe mental retardation. - PKU Anamix junior: Phe-free drink mix for the dietary management of children (1-10 years) with PKU.Glucose control:- Diasip:Food for special medical purposes fou use under medical supervision. Diasip is a nutritionally complete, ready-to-drink milkshake style supplement, deisgned for the dietary management of patients with diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance;Allergy:- Neocate: amino-acid based complete infant formula for diatery management of infants allergic to milk or proteins.COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease):- Respifor: it is a little drink specifically designed for COPD patients to provide the right balance of energy and nutrition.Oncology:- Forticare: it is a food fro special medical purposes for use under medical supervision. Forticare is a nutritionzlly complet, high energy, high protein, ready to drink milk shake style nutritional supplement which is enriched with n-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and fibre for the dietary management of cachexia in oncology patients.Epilepsy:- Ketocal: a nutritionally complete, powdered product, which can be used to administer the classical (4:1) Ketogenic diet for children over 1 year of age.Alzheimer(under development): -Souvenaid (under development): multi-nutrient drink designed to improve cognitive function.

Our digestive system contains a microbiota which is essential for a good digestion.Pre- and probiotics can optimize the good working of this system :-either by interacting with the gastro-intesinal tract- or by interacting with the intestinal microbiota, which will interact with the tract.Therefore there is a complex network of interactions between man, his intestinal flora, prebiotics and probiotic bacteria.Anecdotes:- Danone has been studying probiotics since 1919.- The intestinal folds cover an area as big as 2 tennis courts (400m²).- 70% of the immune system is located in the gut.- The intestine harbours 10^14 bacteria: 10 times more cells than human cells in the body.- Greater than 1,000 different species of bacteria make up the intestinal flora.- Approximately, 1kg of bacteria is contained in a human adult intestine.- 3.3 million bacterial genes in the gut: it is 150 times more than in the human genome.3,3 millions de gènes bactériens dans l'intestin : 150 fois plus que dans le génome humain.

From strains selection to the effect demonstration, R&D teams masters all steps.Comments:Knowledge in gut microbiota: there is an interaction between the gut, the microbiota and biotics. By understanding the gut function, we can easelier study health benefits and identify markers on which we should work to innovate.We have 4,100 different strains coming from biodiversity contained in Danone Bacterial Bank, which forms a huge product innovation potential.

The environmental responsability is also part of DANONE's DNA. Indeed, it is our mission to bring health through food to as many people as possible, and that means preserving and renewing resources. Moreover, healthy food requires healthy ingredients.Since 1990s, DANONE has formalized its commitments.The group defines 5 priorities for action with among other things an ambitious objective : reducing our carbon footprint by 30% in kilos by 2012.It includes 3 areas:- reliable measurements of carbon emissions (work with PricewaterhouseCoopers to develop a method which can be reliably audited)- reducing emissions (notably via packaging with more recycled PET: the first bottle with 100% rPET was launched in 2009 in Mexico)- carbon offsets (creation of the Danone Fund for Nature which identifies and finances projects contributing to CO2 absorption).The Group do not act alone but with recognized partners : RAMSAR, Ademe, INRA, Carbon trust, ...
