MARCH 2014 DANDRITE NEWSLETTER
DANDRITE'S FIRST YEAR!
DANDRITE has now existed for 1 year since the official opening on 5
March, 2013. It has truly been a fabulous start, and we are looking very
much forward to continue our development in 2014. The first two group
leaders (to be five in total) are now busy setting up their labs - Drs. Mark
Denham (stem cells) and Anne von Philipsborn (Drosophila models).
Another recruitment campaign is currently on-going and is expected to
conclude during the spring 2014. The organizational framework, principles
and practice of governance are also coming together well, and the network
of the four nodes (DANDRITE, NCMM, MIMS, and FIMM) of the Nordic-EMBL
Partnership offers a range of new opportunities.
We thank you all for your support during a great first year for DANDRITE -
the Danish Research Institute for Translational Neuroscience.
We are also happy to announce that core group leader and founding
director Poul Nissen will continue as the official director of DANDRITE for
the forthcoming four years.
DANDRITE SYMPOSIUM - MONDAY 17 MARCH 2014
DANDRITE hosts the symposium “New Frontiers in Molecular and
Translational Neuroscience”, where eigth top neuro-scientists from around
the world will present their current research. The symposium is open for
all, and takes place on Monday 17 March 2014 from 12.15 – 17.00 in
the auditorium at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center
(iNANO), Aarhus University. See poster announcement at
www.dandrite.au.dk.

DANDRITE STAFF NEWS
Begoña López Arias started in a one year postdoc position in Group
Leader Anne von Philipsborn's group 1 March, 2014. Begoña López Arias
will explore neuronal circuits implicated in Drosophila courtship behavior
with optogenetic tools.
Florian Hilbers has been appointed a postdoc position in Core Group
Leader Poul Nissen's group for two years from 15 February, 2014. Florian
Hilbers is working with the Na,K-ATPase, the main energy consumer in
brain. His research is focusing on identifying the consequences of hypoxia
on the two subunit (α and β) membrane embedded Na,K-ATPase. The
results of this project will add to a better understanding of the basic
mechanism of the Na,K-ATPase and might lead to the discovery of drugs
preventing cell death after i.e., a stroke.
Antoni Kowalski started in Core Group Leader Poul Nissen's group 1
March, 2014, where he will be working for three years as a postdoctoral
fellow with a “Mobility Plus” scholarship funding by the Polish government.
Antoni Kowalski is working with plasma membrane calcium ATPases and
calcium homeostasis and signaling in brain cells.
DANDRITE ASSOCIATE RESEARCH PROGRAM – DARE
DANDRITE invites applications for collaborative projects in neuroscience.
The projects are expected to have their main activity in DANDRITE
laboratories and to be within the scope and aims of DANDRITE in
translational neuroscience or in basic research of transport and signaling
networks across membranes and among cells in the brain. Funding is
given to both postdoc projects, PhD projects, and equipment. Next
application deadline is 2 June 2014. Read more here

NEUROCAMPUS SOCIAL – FIRST FRIDAY EACH MONTH
The first Friday each month the NeuroCampus community at Aarhus
University and Aarhus University Hospital arranges a “NeuroCampus
Social” event, where all neuro-scientists and others interested in
neuroscience are welcome to attend. There are a couple of short informal
talks on hot neuro-related topics each time, starting at 14.30. The
NeuroCampus Social takes place the first Friday each month from
14-16 at Dale’s Café, which is located right next to the International
Centre at Aarhus University.
INANO COMPETITION “SCIENCE AS ART”
Is your research beautiful?
Many of you think so, but rarely get the chance to show it to people
outside your group. That is why we are announcing the first Science as
Art competition. The best pictures will be featured in the coming iNANO
Bi-annual Report.
Read the rules and conditions of the competition
Deadline for submission of images is 21 March 2014 at 1 pm.

21 March 2014 - Symposium celebrating 40 Years of Biostructural
Chemistry
In 1974, Professor Clark came to Aarhus to form the Biostructural
Chemistry Division of the Department of Chemistry. In the following
years, he greatly expanded the research activities, and started the first
protein crystallography group in Denmark. In 1996, the Biostructural
Chemistry Division, consisting of about 50 people, merged with the
Department of Molecular Biology. Today the group - now called Structural
Biology - is the largest group of the department with 94 staff and students.
Registration deadline 17 March 2014
22 March 2014 - AU celebrates The International Year of
