DESIGN PORTFOLIO

I am currently in my second year studying Design For Industry at Northumbria University. I am a highly motivated individual with a passion for de-sign. My competitive nature I acquired from endur-ance sports has shaped my ‘never give up’ attitude which aids my design work in never submitting anything less than my best. I like to approach each design project with curiosity and imagination as I believe it’s very important to question wherever possible. I think the only way to improve is to con-stantly challenge myself, and I believe there are no boundaries when it comes to what I can learn.

Scholarship• Academic Excellence Scholarship for Northumbria University studying Design

Extended Project Qualification, 2013• In addition to my A Levels, I completed a 4 month project whereby I designed and manufac-

tured the world’s first BlackBerry docking station, later presenting my final product to a panel of external judges

• Completed 200 hours of extra-curricular activities and achieved the AQA Baccalaureate at grade A*

Engineering Education Scheme, 2012• Designed and manufactured an electronically controlled motion platform which has two

degrees of freedom and will replicate the motion of a car racing around the MIRA test track in Telford.

Gold Crest Award, British Science Association, 2012• From the completion of the Engineering Education Scheme and presentation of the motion

simulator to an independent judging panel, I was awarded the Gold Crest Award.

Young Person Of The Year Award 2010• Completed a 190 mile run in 24 hours from one coast of England to the other for charity.

Prime Oak Buildings • Designing bespoke oak buildings using a range of software to create both 2D and 3D

renderings for the client. • GKN Auto Structures Telford• Experience as a mechanical engineer in the workshop• Tested motorcycles to breaking point and aided in the transformation of a London bus into

a hybrid form.• Spent a week learning the Industrial Catia software

A child experiences thousands of products and services before they reach the age of 8. Why should getting injections be a bad one? If fear and pain could be replaced with excitement and curiosity, the attitude towards injections could be changed through the distraction of the child’s senses.

Page 8: Dan Genner Industrial Design Portfolio

An Instant Freeze Pack is placed inside the device and by the process of conduction, the pack will transfer the cold energy through the metallic plate which makes contact with the skin. The plate will cool the skin until numb. On the thermochromic surface the child can see the colour change as they can feel their arm getting colder. The numbing sensation cancels out the pain leaving the child to have a painless injection..

Non Literal Form Skills

10

Design a non-literal product. This is a product that has no prescribed function, but which consciously manipulates how an electronic, personal domestic or business product can be perceived.

Biomimicry Skills

Adaptations

Using biological influences, I was given the opportunity to invent a product or system which was based around the adaptations of the

Thorny Devil. Through the process of capillary action the Thorny Devil can accumulate all the water it needs from morning dew in an

otherwise harsh and extreme environment.

I focused on transport, in particular cars, and found there were three main areas where water is used. Through these findings, I started the Ideation stage.

Page 18: Dan Genner Industrial Design Portfolio

DevelopmentThrough the refinement stages, I came up with various possibilities of installment for various vehicle types.

Light SkillsDesign a desk lamp for young professionals. My proposal

focuses more on retro design and producing a concept which really is the centerpiece of the workspace.

The sliding variable resistor in the light source has a magnet attached to it. This magnet attracts to a magnet on the support shown in green. When the wheel is turned in the desired direction and the cogs turn, ‘‘the magnet slides down the variable resistor which alters the voltage to the lamp. Turn the wheel to get the desired brightness.

22

The cogs are held in place underneath the support.

Design a piece of furniture which transforms as the child grows. The piece of furniture I designed was centered

around a cot which transformed into a desk when the cot was no longer needed.

Dowels and magnetic locks allow the structure to transform. The locks keep the child’s extremities safe.

Materials- 40mm thick timber plywood com-ponents with a non-toxic finish.- Acrylic plastic glued into place using epoxy resins.

Small engraved signs indicate where the safety locks are.

ENGAGING THE BIN

Feeling dirty after handling rubbish and touching public bins.

Feeling good about your-self afterwards for helping the environment.

The Fun Theory SkillsThe Durham Light Festival attracts up to 150,000 people to

see art in the form of light. The Festival gave me a perfect chance to showcase my art which had a clear meaning behind it. Bincinerate is an interactive bin which uses light and sound

effects to create an incineration illusion inside the bin in order to encourage people to recycle more.

Research, Experience Flow

Page 33: Dan Genner Industrial Design Portfolio

Unwrap the food/ product. If its food, eat it.

Scrunch up the waste packaging. Could this be done for you/provide a fun alternative?

Locating the nearest bin, some-times they are hidden. Some can be a long way away. Can they be made more visible?

ENGAGING THE BIN

Some bins are on the other side of the road. People may need to endanger themselves and others by crossing the road when the traffic lights are green. Could it be made more accessible?

Bins often smell and sometimes are in-sect infested. Could there be something created to stop or mask the smell and infestation?

Feeling dirty after handling rubbish and touching public bins.

Rancid smell after putting the rubbish in the bin.

Putting rubbish in the bin is not pleasant. Looking into the bin to see other people’s waste is not a good experience.

A full bin can soon become littering itself.

CREATING THE WASTE

Page 34: Dan Genner Industrial Design Portfolio

Bincinerate will be a series of 4 bins which will coincide with festival in Durham. These bins will be situated at the four specific points shown in the map.

Exhibitions of Light Bincinerate

Insights Gained From Research And Field Trip To Durham

- Non-permanent residents take less care over the environment they move to as it is not their permanent hometown. - The attitude towards recycling is very poor, for many people, it is always the responsibility of someone else.- Although many say littering is bad, very few tell the people who litter to pick up their waste.

Create a 3:1 scale Lego Man by accurately measuring the dimensions with Vernier Calipers. Using the dimensions draft up an Illustrator working drawing and outline the

materials that are to be used for specific component parts. Produce the Lego Man at 3:1 scale.
