Dale Jones-Evans
Architect
Dale studied fine arts (painting) then architecture and first practiced architecture (1981) as a student, working on small residential projects while designing art-furniture.
In 1983 he formed Biltmoderne which shot to national and international prominence with exhibitions and award winning architectural projects also published in the USA, Italy and the UK. In 1987 ‘The National Gallery of Victoria’ staged a furniture exhibition titled ‘From Robert Adam to Biltmoderne’. Branded as Australia’s architectural ‘enfant terrible’ Biltmoderne was seminal in arguing for a new approach to cross-disciplinary design.
Dale prosecuted a case for a direct conversation with all media including popular media in order to talk up the function and value of design in our cities. This attitude ran counter to the conventional behaviour of the ‘profession’ and the stereotypical cultural-left view that and engagement with ‘popular media equals a sell-out. With the fundamental rise in social media his views have proven prophetic.
Dale continued curating architecture exhibitions, writing for the press, art and architecture journals and was the youngest architect to receive the highly prestigious National Robin Boyd Award (1991).
Dale moved to Sydney (1993-2014) and designed numerous projects across a range and scale of project types; residential, multi residential, commercial, cultural and public and hospitality and tourism projects across Australia, Europe, China and the USA, many received National and State awards. Dale. Dale diversified design projects to include public art projects.
Dale represented Australia in two Venice Biennales in Italy and was made an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at UTS, Sydney, NSW (2006-). The practices work has been published extensively in national and international journals and publications.
Dale is recognised for his innovative and multidisciplinary approach to integrating art, design and architecture, with a personal professional platform in both.
