There is a lot of news from the DAKTARI camp and here is the newsletter to share it with all of you! But firstly, thank you all for

your continued support to our cause, without you and your consistent help, we would not be able to carry out our mission as well as

we do!

Newsletter Q2 2015! April – May - June

WELCOME DAKTARI FRIENDS!

Creating and running DAKTARI has been, from the beginning, a life full of challenges regarding material, finances, emotions and competences.

We receive so much from our achievements, volunteers, children, animals and YOU, that we cannot allow ourselves to give up when times are difficults.

We highly appreciate your support and this is very easy to say, but what you probably do not know is that we even think of YOU when we are brushing our teeth

There is no “after hours” for us. It is our life and you are part of it »

Sincerely,

Ian and Michèle

A word from the Co-Founders…

Winner’s Game Drive

4

Every week, the volunteers get toghether and decide on what we call a ‘winner of the week’. The award is aims to encourage the child who throughout the week has made the most effort to improve. As a reward, the winner of the week takes home a Marula tree, and also wins a game drive! In early May, the winners of the week for the past few months got together and were taken for a beautiful game drive in Makalali Game Reserve. They were lucky enough to see Elephants, Rhinos and Lions! But more importantly, they could see the beautiful wildlife which they learnt about at DAKTARI, and how their actions can impact the animals!

The experience seen from different eyes…

• In May, we took the opportunityto interview some of the children who come to DAKTARI to see what they learned, but also to find out what they cherished the most from their week. Light and Evidence jumped right at the opportunity of talking to us and here are some extract from what they said!

Light:• “I learnt more about animals, being polite

and respecting people. I will help animals so that tourists can come to South Africa and learn more about animals just like me.”

Evidence: • “We must respect animals and take care of

them. We must also treat others the way that we want to be treated.”

An incredible success!• Who knew that a group of tame rabbits would make such

a huge difference! • The have turned out to be an incredibly useful tool to get

the children to interact safely with animals for the first time! They now actively serve as the first stepping stone for the children to begin seeing animals as more than just tools or something to fear, and open their eyes and their mind to loving animals for their beauty and natural value!

Mohola• Her name alone means ‘greatness’ in Sepedi, the local

language. A few weeks ago we shared with you her terrible injury, where her left-hind leg had the skin literally peeled off. Although gruesome, we took care of the injury and made sure she was fed. Little did we know what she had in store for us! Just a couple of days ago, she was seen wandering around the camp with a little baby duiker! Not only did she recover, but she is now also looking after her young one!

Not everything is good news…

• Unfortunately, life in the bush is not always spotting wildlife in our ‘backyard’ and spectacular sunsets… Over the past few months we have struggled with continuous problems with our solar batteries, making dinners in the dark and power shortages more common than usual.

• Although we must admit that dinners by candle-light are very romantic, not being able to run the camp at 100% is somewhat of a problem! Mainly because we need to power our core; the office!

We have a NEW project!

14

We are happy to share with you that we successfully completed our project on GlobalGiving and raised over $40,000 to provide Environmental Education for the children who come to DAKTARI! As a result we have completely revamped our project on the fundraising platform to accurately reflect the current situation and needs of our project in order to continue making an impact. We have updated the impact which each donation will make in order to give you, our donors and supporters, a more accurate and up-to-date view of how your donations are directly put into the project!

Thank you to the Hoedspruit Community and the people from the Wildsfees 2015!

In mid June, DAKTARI took it’s show on the road and went to Wildsfees, a festival in Hoedspruit! We were fortunate enough to speak to a lot of people and tell them about our project! It was amazing to see the support from our local community and we hope that you enjoyed meeting us as much as we did you! Hopefully we will see you soon!
