The company’s founders, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, made
history with the invention of the automobile in the year 1886. 125
years later, in the anniversary year of 2011, Daimler AG is one of the
world’s most successful automotive companies. With its divisions
Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler
Buses and Daimler Financial Services, the Daimler Group is one
of the biggest producers of premium cars and the world’s biggest
manufacturer of commercial vehicles with a global reach. Daimler
Financial Services provides its customers with a full range of auto-
motive nancial services including nancing, leasing, insurance and
eet management.
As an automotive pioneer, Daimler continues to shape the future of
mobility. The Group applies innovative and green technologies to
produce safe and superior vehicles which fascinate and delight itscustomers. With the development of alternative drive systems, Daimler
is the only vehicle producer investing in all three technologies of
hybrid drive, electric motors and fuel cells, with the goal of achieving
emission-free mobility in the long term. This is just one example of
how Daimler willingly accepts the challenge of meeting its responsi-
bility towards society and the environment.
Daimler sells its vehicles and services in nearly all the countries of
the world and has production facilities on ve continents. In addition
to Mercedes-Benz, the world’s most valuable automotive brand,
Daimler’s brand portfolio includes smart, Maybach, Freightliner,
Western Star, BharatBenz, Fuso, Setra, Orion and Thomas Built Buses.
The company is listed on the stock exchanges of Frankfurt and
Stuttgart (stock exchange symbol DAI). In the year 2010, the Daimler
Group sold 1.9 million vehicles and employed a workforce ofmore than 260,000 people; revenue totaled €97.8 billion and EBIT
amounted to €7.3 billion.

Six strong vehicle brands are concentrated under the Daimler Trucks
umbrella. All over the world, we oer customized applications and
pioneering technologies in our products.
» Trucks Europe/Latin America
The Mercedes-Benz brand is a synonym for rst-class product
and service quality, cost-eectiveness, reliability, and sustain-
ability, as summed up by slogan “Trucks you can trust.” Whether
the vehicle required is for long- haul, distribution, or construction
site operation, the Mercedes-Benz brand provides individual and
reliable solutions in the medium and heavy- duty truck segment.
For many decades now, the pioneering spirit at Mercedes-Benz
Trucks has generated groundbreaking innovations — from alterna-
tive drives to active and passive safety systems.
» Trucks NAFTA
The Freightliner Trucks brand, the main pillar of the Daimler Trucks
North America business unit, manufactures trucks in the Class 5–8
segment. These vehicles cover a broad range of application areas in
the commercial vehicle segment. In line with the “Run Smart” slogan,
the company puts its faith in innovation, technology, and customer-
focused activities.
The Western Star brand oers premium-class heavy-duty trucks,
primarily for use by owner-operators or small eets. Western Star
serves market niches such as special and construction site applica-
tions as well as long-haul transport.
With their striking exteriors and ideal suitability for o-road appli-cations, the vehicles are without a doubt “serious trucks for serious
truckers.”
They’re a common sight on North American roads: the yellow school
buses from Thomas Built Buses. North America’s leading school bus
manufacturer can look back on a long and distinguished history. In
fact, Thomas Built Buses has been the embodiment of innovative
styling, safety, and top quality since 1916.
» Trucks Asia
The Fuso brand has made a name for itself worldwide as a quality-
conscious manufacturer. Nowadays its reputation extends well beyond
Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The vehicles developed and produ-
ced by Fuso are not only of high quality; they are also cost-eective
and tailored to the requirements of their application areas. As a result,
customers can totally rely on them, day after day. Fuso oers extre-
mely customer-focused and comprehensive spare parts and workshopservices for its trucks and buses.
Today Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation is an integral part
of Daimler Trucks. It plays an important role as the Asian pillar and
competence center for light-duty trucks and state-of-the-art hybrid
technology.
» Daimler India Commercial Vehicles
The introduction of the BharatBenz brand strengthens Daimler
Trucks’ involvement in India and serves as the basis for introducing
a local generation of trucks. The new brand oers customers a com-
prehensive product range in the weight classes from six to 49 tons,
as well as solutions for various areas of application.

Global Excellence. Growth and Market Penetration
We intend to further expand and strengthen Daimler Trucks’ global
presence. To this end it will be necessary to open up new markets
with good growth opportunities, such as Russia, India, and China. We
are employing dierent market penetration strategies that are suited
to the respective market situations. In markets where we are already
active, we want to further strengthen our presence and focus even
more intensely on the customers’ needs. Our aim is to grow in terms
of quality and quantity alike.
We will use the market recovery to extend our market shares in the
triad markets and in Brazil. In the future we will follow our emerging
economies strategy of oering custom products aimed at the in-
creasingly important “upcoming modern domestic” segment. By doing
so we will support our sales growth in the emerging economies. We
have created an own-vehicle brand for India in the form of Bharat-
Benz, which will oer locally developed and manufactured products
for exactly this segment.
At the same time, Daimler Trucks is about to launch its greatest
product campaign ever. Over the coming 24 months we will renew
virtually all of our portfolio — with more than 140 new products and
powertrains. With “Shaping Future Transportation: ValueDrive,” we
will also strengthen our range of services, aftersales activities, and
mobility services.
With the “Get to 8!” program, which addresses continual cost man-
agement and the further exploitation of synergy potential, Daimler
Trucks aims to achieve an eight percent return on sales across the
entire business cycle, beginning in 2013. The expansion of the com-
pany’s global modular system will enable us to more eectively adapt
products to local needs in emerging markets while also remaining
highly ecient. As a result, new product generations will have an
unprecedented level of commonality.
Future Product Generations and Technologies
Ensuring that future product generations oer innovations and even
more value for customers is the strategic goal of the fourth initiative
within the Global Excellence program. In this way, Daimler Trucks
is underscoring its leadership regarding new technologies. This is
clearly evident in the new product generation of the Mercedes-Benz
Atego and Axor trucks.
An important focus at Daimler is alternative drive systems. Today
Daimler is the leader when it comes to developing hybrid drives forbuses and trucks. Thanks to the new Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec
Hybrid, Daimler Trucks now also has a hybrid truck for Europe in
its product range. These activities — alongside those in the elds of
natural gas and fuel cell drives — are combined in Daimler’s Shaping
Future Transportation: CleanDrive Technologies initiative.
The Global Excellence program has been helping to dene the strategic
direction of Daimler Trucks since 2005. The program, which encom-
passes short, medium, and long-term objectives, has been conceived
to promote eciency increases and the implementation of econo-
mies of scale.
Daimler Trucks has emerged from the downturn that occurred in the
crisis year 2009 in good shape, thanks in large part to “Global Excel-
lence.” Instruments such as exible production capacity and working
time models made it possible to adapt production at the commercial
vehicle and component plants to signicantly lower demand.
The Global Excellence program encompasses four initiatives:
Management of Market Cycles, Operational Excellence, Growth and
Market Penetration, and Future Product Generations and Technologies.
During the past year we have transformed strategic growth targets
in emerging economies and traditional markets into operational
projects with milestones. For example, we have expanded Daimler
Trucks’ global production network to incorporate the Juiz de Fora
plant in Brazil. In addition, Daimler Trucks has also very successfully
implemented regional restructuring programs ahead of schedule.
Management of Market Cycles
The rst initiative — “Management of Market Cycles” — is designed
to lessen the impact on Daimler Trucks of the cyclical developments
that are typical of the sector. This helps to ensure the long-term pro-
tability of the Commercial Vehicles division. The commercial vehicle
sector has to cope with strong cycles. The reasons for this include
the fact that the vehicles are used in specic commercial contexts,
the life cycles of vehicle eets, exchange rate eects, developments
aecting the global economy, and, in particular, emissions legislation.
Operational Excellence
The second initiative — “Operational Excellence” — concentrates on
the rigorous reduction of material and xed costs, the optimization
and standardization of global processes, and the increased exibility
of production plants. The foundation here is the management system
known as the “Truck Operating System” (TOS), which is based onthe principle of lean management. TOS is designed to be used not
only in production but also at all specialized units and departments.
Daimler Trucks is also intensifying its eorts to generate further
synergy eects and economies of scale by further networking its
individual functions and embedding its products in an intelligent
component-sharing strategy.

Low-emission and zero-emission trucks; commercial vehicles that
automatically engage the brakes when they approach obstacles;
all-round service — from the purchase of the vehicle and its use to
subsequent disposal; and minimum lifecycle-related costs. For
Daimler Trucks all of these features can be summed up under a
single heading: Shaping Future Transportation. In line with this
slogan, we bring together a wide range of technologies and servicesthat will make commercial vehicles safer, more economical, and
more environmentally friendly.
Our aim is to be the driving force behind sustainable mobility.
Daimler is promoting CleanDrive Technologies that will drastically
reduce the emissions and fuel consumption of commercial vehicles.
This approach extends across all levels of technology, from combus-
tion engines and hybrid drives to fuel cell vehicles and new fuels.
It also includes all vehicle segments, from light vans to heavy-duty
trucks, and all of the Group’s brands around the world. About
400,000 vehicles with CleanDrive technologies are currently being
driven worldwide, making Daimler Trucks the Number One manu-
facturer of alternative drive technology. A notable example is the
Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid. Last year a panel of inter-national experts named this vehicle and its entire production series
“International Truck of the Year 2011.”
As a pioneer in road safety, we are striving to make driving accident-
free. For years now, all of the major safety system innovations have
been invented by Daimler. Our SafeDrive Technologies initiative will
pave the way for the widespread use of safe commercial vehicles in
road trac. Our vehicles are the benchmarks for active and passive
safety. For example, our Active Brake Assist and proximity control
provide drivers of trucks and travel coaches with electronic support.
The new Active Brake Assist 2 system for the Mercedes-Benz Actrosheavy-duty truck can also initiate emergency braking in front of a
stationary obstacle — for example, when a driver suddenly encoun-
ters a trac jam on the highway. A major advantage of the radar-con-
trolled system is that it is eective from 0 to 89 km/h, regardless of
visibility or weather conditions.
Obviously the new safety systems should be transferred to all
vehicles as quickly as possible. And no other automaker has such
a wide range of cars, trucks, buses, and vans. Thanks to this
approach, our travel coaches can be tted with systems similar to
those used in our trucks. Mercedes vans have a lot to gain here,
because the vehicles can take advantage not only of the safety tech-
nology used in commercial vehicles but also of the systems used incars, to which vans are more closely related with regard to size and
handling.
The third element of Shaping Future Transportation involves Value-
Drive Technologies, which provide individualized customer utility.
Commercial vehicles are designed to earn money while also cutting
costs as much as possible. However, the purchase price of trucks
represents only part of their total cost ; the lion‘s share of their cost
is accounted for by operating expenses. That ’s why Daimler oers
a diverse range of customized services that address everything from
vehicle purchase and use to subsequent disposal. This issue hasbecome particularly important in times of economic uncertainty.
Mercedes-Benz, Fuso, and Setra, which oer a large number of
dierent services, are pioneers in their respective areas.
