At Daimler Buses, we realized early on that 2012 would be a difficult year for the bus business. The debt crisis and empty coffers have therefore not found us unprepared. We are systematically implemen-ting a growth and efficiency program called GLOBE2013 in order to make ourselves even more impervious to changes in the economic climate and to safeguard our position as the Number One company in the bus business over the long term.

In spite of all the challenges we face, we are maintaining the rapid pace of recent years when it comes to our development of new products. After all, companies that save on investments will have less to offer in competitive markets as time goes by. At the same time, we need to strengthen our technological leadership and make sure we continue to grow in our traditional markets as well as in new ones.

The result of this policy is the series of new products that we are successively launching on the market. In Europe we’ve got the new Mercedes-Benz Citaro, a product of outstanding quality that is set-ting the standards in terms of economy, safety, comfort, and design. This vehicle is already available with drive systems that comply with the Euro VI emissions standard, which will not be mandatory until 2014. We’ve also got the Mercedes-Benz Travego Edition 1, the first travel coach that fulfills the Euro VI standard. Finally, the new Setra ComfortClass is living up to its name in the premium travel coach segment. And in Mexico and the rest of Latin America we are also forging ahead with our new product developments.

Through our products we are making a contribution to safe, effective, comfortable, and environmentally friendly public transportation and enhancing people’s quality of life. We are also making a contribution by systematically developing and shaping sustainable solutions for local public transportation — an area in which demand is expected to double worldwide by 2025. We aim to share in this growth.

Sincerely yours, Hartmut SchickHead of Daimler Buses & CEO EvoBus GmbH

Daimler AG is one of the world’s most successful automotive companies. With its divisions Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler Buses and Daimler Financial Services, the Daimler Group is one of the biggest producers of premium cars and the world’s biggest manufacturer of commercial vehicles with a global reach. Daimler Financial Services provides financing, leasing, fleet management, insur-ance and innovative mobility services.

The company’s founders, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, made history with the invention of the automobile in the year 1886. As a pioneer of automotive engineering, Daimler continues to shape the future of mobility today: The Group’s focus is on innovative and green tech- nologies as well as on safe and superior automobiles that appeal to and fascinate its customers. For many years now, Daimler has been investing continually in the development of alternative drive systems with the goal of making emission-free driving possible in the long term. So in addition to vehicles with hybrid drive, Daimler now has the broadest range of locally emission-free electric vehicles powered by batteries and fuel cells. This is just one example of how Daimler willingly accepts the challenge of meeting its responsibility towards society and the environment.

Daimler sells its vehicles and services in nearly all the countries of the world and has production facilities on five continents. Its current brand portfolio includes, in addition to the world’s most valuable premium automotive brand, Mercedes-Benz, the brands smart, Maybach, Freight- liner, Western Star, BharatBenz, Fuso, Setra and Thomas Built Buses. The company is listed on the stock exchanges of Frankfurt and Stuttgart (stock exchange symbol DAI). In 2011, the Group sold 2.1 million vehicles and employed a workforce of more than 271,000 people; revenue totaled €106.5 billion and EBIT amounted to € 8.8 billion.

Hybrid technology plays a key role in these vehicles, as it reduces diesel consumption by up to one third, depending on the application. The hybrid portfolio of Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses is unmatched anywhere in the world, ranging from Fuso and Freightliner brand vehicles to hybrid commercial vehicles bearing the Mercedes star.

Further expansion of activities Up to now, Daimler Buses delivered a total of 67 Mercedes-Benz Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid articulated buses, which are used in regular service operations in places like Hamburg, Krefeld, Mülheim/Ruhr, Stuttgart, Rotterdam, and Milan. The Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid is the only hybrid bus to date that can cover extended stretches while run-ning solely on electricity, without using the diesel engine.

The extremely economical Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid generates zero local emissions, putting it at the forefront of sus-tainable mobility. Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HH) has acquired four Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrids for Germany’s NaBuZ demo project (German abbreviation for “Sustainable Bus System of the Future — Demonstration”). In May this year another five vehicles were delivered to the PostAuto Schweiz AG and are being constituted in the public transport of the Swiss canton Aargau. Compared to the fuel cell buses that were tested in Hamburg beginning in 2003, the new Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid has many new features: a hybrid system with energy recovery and storage in lithium-ion batteries, high-performance electric motors with 120 kW of constant power output in the wheel hubs, electric ancillary components, and enhanced fuel cells.

These features are meant to increase service life to at least six years or 12,000 hours of operation. Thanks to improved fuel cell components and hybridization with lithium-ion batteries, the new Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid uses almost 50 percent less hydrogen than the predecessor generation.

In September 2011, the innovative Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system received the University of Duisburg-Essen’s ÖkoGlobe award in theNew Mobility Concepts category. With BRT, buses operate in sepa-rate dedicated lanes, ensuring fast and efficient transport of largenumbers of passengers. In this way, BRT can inexpensively makeoptimum use of the available road network while substantially reduc-ing the emissions produced per passenger and kilometer.

Shaping Future TransportationDaimler Trucks and Daimler Buses are forging ahead with measuresfor significantly reducing the fuel consumption and CO2 and pollutantemissions of their vehicles. The world’s leading commercial vehiclemanufacturer is consolidating these activities in its worldwide “Shaping Future Transportation” initiative. The initiative actively incorporates the brands Mercedes-Benz, Setra, Freightliner, Fuso, and Thomas Built Buses.

Daimler’s development path extends from clean conventional fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, to natural gas and hybrid drives to hydrogen for vehicles with fuel cell drives. More than 770,000 Daimler commercial vehicles with SCR technology are currently on the road around the world. At the Busworld 2011 vehicle show in Kortrijk, Belgium, Daimler presented the world’s first travel coach to comply with the Euro VI emissions standard: the Mercedes-Benz Travego Edition 1 – and in July this year the first Mercedes-Benz Citaro with Euro VI emissions was delivered to customers and the first Setra Coach CC 500 with Euro VI was presented. The Euro VI standard will become obligatory in early 2014.

Daimler is the global leader for “green” commercial vehicles: By the middle of this year, the company had already delivered around 22,000 vehicles that use alternative drive concepts to customers.

Along with other active assistance systems such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), the Lane Assistant (SPA), the Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL), Brake Assist (BA), and the ART proximity cruise control system, “Active Brake Assist” underscores Daimler’s technology leadership in the field of active safety.

A coach-industry first is the innovative use of Attention Assist (ATAS) which is coming into action in the Setra ComfortClass 500 this year. Based on specific criteria, such as steering movements and braking activity, activation of the direction indicator, vehicle speed and time of day, the system continually retrieves information about the driver‘s condition. Attention Assist infers the driver‘s ability to react as well as the level of fatigue based on the correlation between the information gleaned and the adapted driver profile. If a defined model value is exceeded, an electronic signal causes the driver‘s seat to vibrate – unbeknown to the passengers.

Daimler also sets the pace when it comes to passive safety. In 2007, for example, the company achieved a milestone in passive safety for buses with the introduction of Front Collision Guard (FCG). This system, which stands for maximum protection for drivers and passengers of travel coaches, also offers protection to occupants of other vehicles by preventing them from being forced under an FCG-equipped bus in the event of a collision. The essential elements of FCG are an integrated absorber structure and a front module which upon impact moves the entire driver’s area – including the seat, steering wheel, and pedals – toward the rear by as much as 20 centimeters. This offers an unprecedented level of safety for the driver and the front-seat passenger, while also demonstrating that buses are the safest means of passenger transport.

Buses from Mercedes-Benz and Setra are the leaders in active and passive safety worldwide. Independent studies have demonstrated that vehicles equipped with active safety systems are less likely to be involved in accidents than those without such systems. When com-bined with standard-fitted safety systems, such additional measures can both actively and passively prevent accidents leading to damage and personal injury. Another preventative component are safety training programs for bus drivers.

Pioneer in active and passive safety For more than 50 years, developments from Daimler have been leading the way in the field of vehicle safety. These developments can be divided into active and passive safety elements.

One example of an active safety system is the multiple award-winning Active Brake Assist (ABA), whose introduction in 2006 expanded the range of highly efficient assistance systems for active accident prevention. The system goes into action whenever there is imminent danger of a collision with a slower-moving vehicle ahead and the driver fails to react to this situation. After issuing several phased warnings, the assistant automatically engages an emergency braking maneuver, thereby actively working to prevent rear-end collisions and helping to save lives. Currently unparalleled in the industry, ABA has been available in Mercedes-Benz trucks since 2006 and in Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand travel coaches since 2008. Since April 2012 the Active Brake Assist 2 is available, which reacts on stationary obstacles.

takes the lead with regard to environmentally friendly buses. Using future-oriented diesel technology, the world’s cleanest diesel-powered regular-service buses are substantially reducing the amount of CO2 emitted into the environment. Bus operators, in turn, benefit from fuel savings of around 1,000 liters of diesel per year. The first customer to buy the Euro VI-compliant Citaro is the Hessian capital of Wiesbaden.

» June 2012 Mercedes-Benz articulated buses for Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian metropo-lis adopts Daimler’s innovative Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) mobility concept. Rio de Janeiro plans to invest in a BRT system extending about 150 kilometers in order to be able to handle the increased mobility needs during the next Football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. For the network’s first stretch, which goes into operation in June, Mer-cedes-Benz do Brasil supplies the city with 90 articulated buses fea-turing BlueTec 5 technology. The buses meet Brazil’s PROCONVE P-7 emissions standard, which went into effect in January 2012.

Expanded product range for Western Europe. Midyear, Mer-cedes-Benz added the Intouro regular-service bus to its product range for Western Europe. Since the vehicle’s market launch in 2007, the bus has clearly demon-strated its worth by selling more than 3,500 Intouros in France and Portugal as well as many Central and Eastern European countries. Daimler Buses is expanding its

» February 2012 Major order from Istanbul. The Istanbul public transport company IETT orders a total of 221 Merce-des-Benz Conecto articulated buses from Mercedes-Benz Türk. The 18-meter-long low-floor buses are manufactured in the Mercedes-Benz bus plant in Hoşdere near Istanbul.

» March 2012 Launch of the growth and efficiency offen-sive GLOBE 2013. This fitness program encompasses Daimler Buses’ entire value chain and all of its locations. One of the program’s aims is to interlink the European production net-work even more strongly, which includes locations in Germany, France, Turkey, and the Czech Republic. The German produc-tion sites in Mannheim and Neu-Ulm are becoming even more competitive and will remain an integral part of the network. Moreover, GLOBE 2013 utilizes existing growth potential in traditional markets and helps to boost business in new markets.

Driving environmental protec- tion. Hybrid technology is the solution for providing environ- mentally friendly local bus trans-port in the future — an assess-ment that’s also shared by cus-

tomers from the transportation sector. Hybrids will enable bus companies to meet the European Union’s ambitious climate pro-tection targets for 2050. In their role as users and reference cus-tomers, transport companies are helping this technology to reach its breakthrough. One of these companies is the Wuppertaler WSW mobil GmbH, which has been operating its first Citaro G Bluetec Hybrid since March.

First Euro VI-compliant travel coach delivered. The Swedish bus company Lidbergs Bus AB buys the first Euro VI-compliant travel coach in Europe. The 90-year-old company received its first Travego Edition 1 coach in March. The vehicle is equipped with the OM 471 engine (one of a series of BlueEfficiency Power engines), the newly developed GO 250-8 transmission, addi-tional safety features, and an ergonomically upgraded cockpit.

» May 2012 Start of series production for a clean regular-service bus. At the Mannheim plant, the launch of series production of the Euro VI-compliant Citaro bus opens up a new chapter in the his-tory of regular-service buses. With this step, Mercedes-Benz

Highlights 2012. product range in response to strong shifts in demand in this price-sensitive segment.

» July 2012 World premiere of the Setra ComfortClass 500. The new Setra ComfortClass 500 travel coach celebrated its world premiere at two major international events at the Stutt-gart exhibition center. The first of these events was the Daimler IAA Preview, during which media representatives took a close look at the new generation of the travel coach. The second event was held in the final week of July, when the Setra ComfortClass 500 was presented to several thousand customers from all over Europe. Besides boasting great economy, comfort, safety, and value, the new travel coaches already meet future legal requirements.

Singapore transit authority places a major order for 450 Mercedes-Benz city buses. The Mercedes star will soon be seen even more often on the streets of Singapore. Daimler Buses has once again received a major order from this city-state and will deliver 450 Citaro buses to Southeast Asia between the fall of 2012 and the end of 2015.

» August 2012 Daimler Buses closes a major order for more than 150 buses from DB Fleet Management GmbH. Beginning in 2013, the Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand urban and intercity buses will be gradually delivered to Germany’s largest bus trans-port provider. All of the vehicles will be used in regional and urban transport operations.
