I believe in the horse. The automobile is a tempo-rary phenomenon was the shattering verdict oEmperor Wilhelm II regarding this new means

o transportation. He could not have been moremistaken: 125 years aer the invention o thePatent Motor Car by Carl Benz, automobiles aremoving the world. The pioneering spirit o ourcompanys ounders, and the passion o that erato transorm visions into reality, still inspire ustoday to reinvent the car over and over again.

More than 125 years ago, Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile independently o one another. January 29, 1886 the day that Carl Benz led

a patent or his motor car is regarded as the birthday o this groundbreaking invention.

However, we intend to make the mobility o the uturenot only as clean as possible; we are and will r emainat the oreront in matters o saety. We are nowcoming closer to realizing our Vision o Accident-reeDriving and whenever an accident is unavoidable, innovative saety systems minimize injury and damage

to road users, both within and outside the vehicle. In addition, we are contributing our expertise to thedevelopment o a modern transport inrastructure.

These accomplishments are made possible by morethan a quarter o a million Daimler employees world-wide. In their diversity, they reect our customersand markets. Outstanding achievement has nothingto do with gender, age, or origin: On the contrary, awide variety o perspectives and skills provide er tileground or the production o vehicles that generateenthusiasm among our customers throughout theworld. For us, entrepreneurial success and integrityin business practice are two sides o the same coin. With a culture that meets the highest ethical demands,we intend to set new standards: Clean, legally soundbusiness practice is just as important to us as clean, sae products.

I cordially invite you to embark on a tour o auto-motive history on the ollowing pages and to ndout more about our latest technologies, concepts, and initiatives.

Dear reader, the automobile has been transormingthe world or 125 years and will continue to do soin uture. But perhaps more than ever beore, theworld is now also transorming the automobile. On theone hand, its career in the most populous countrieso the world is currently still in its inancy; on the other

hand, reserves o petroleum are limited and theresilience o our ecosystem even more so. Th e task athand is thereore to reconcile the growing demandor mobility with eective climate protection. This isno small challenge, but no one is as well prepared orit as the inventors o the automobile.

Only Daimler already today has the products and tech -nologies at its disposal to oer the ull spectr um osustainable mobility. We are optimizing efcient state-o-the-art gasoline and diesel engines in all vehiclecategories: With the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, orexample, we are introducing the rst ve-liter S-Classvehicle on the market in 2011. At the same time, thebattery-powered smart electric drive is already inlocally zero-emission operation and the countdownis under way or large-scale production. The highreliability o purely electric dr iving on long journeysis being demonstrated in this anniversary year by an

unprecedented round-the-world tour with three uelcell-powered Mercedes-Benz B-Class automobiles the F-CELL World Drive.

As the inventors o the car and the truck, we are passionate about their uture or example with the Mercedes- Benz F 800 Style research vehicle.

This car demonstrates that we are equally committed to the protection o the climate and the environment and to the saety o our vehicles.

Our goal is to reduce the uel consumption and emissionso our vehicles with an intelligent blend o drive systems to suitall requirements, and to avoid them altogether in the long term.

We shape the uture and provide sustainable ideasor the mobility o today and tomorrow.

    30,000 kilometers around the

world in 125 days: The pioneering

    Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive

is being launched in 2011 with

three uel cell vehicles. As part o the H2-Mobility initiative, Daimler is driving orward the establishment o a close-knit network o hydrogen uel stations.

As the inventoro the car and the

    truck, Daimler

    assumes respon-

    sibility or their

    uture.

For 125 years, Daimler has been a driving orcebehind the overall development o road transport rom individual mobility by car up to the tr ansporto goods with trucks. We are using this competitiveedge in development to secure sustainable mobility inall these areas, or the uture as well. Our customersexpect sae, comortable, high-perormance vehiclesthat at the same time are required to be increasinglyeconomical and environment-riendly. As the inventorso the automobile, we are making high investmentsto meet these demands.

We have set out the key priorities in development inour Road to Emission-ree Driving: the ongoing development and optimization o

    vehicles with state-o-the-art internal combustionengines,

urther increases in efciency through tailor-madehybridization,

and locally emission-ree driving with uel cell andbattery-powered vehicles.

For Daimler, this intelligent blend o drive systems isthe key to sust ainable mobility.

Our vision:an intelligent blend o drive systems. For more then a century, automobiles were operatedalmost exclusively on the basis o petroleum. In viewo dynamically growing global mobility demands, dwindling oil reserves, rising energy prices, and aconstant increase in environmental awareness,Daimler is now ocusing on made-to-measuresolutions to cater to the diverse requirements ormobility in all areas o road transport.

Joining orces to achieve more. One componento the integrated approach o our Road to Emission-ree Driving comprises partnerships with othercompanies rom the elds o technology, energy, and inrastructure, together with the public sector.Initiatives such as the international e-mobilityprojects, the uel cell test eets in Berlin, Hamburg, and Los Angeles, or the car2go car-sharing projectsin Ulm, Hamburg, and Austin (Texas) provide thebasis or testing new vehicle and mobility conceptsin practical operation.

The efciency o our internal combustion engines will determinehow much uel will be saved over the coming years and whatamount emissions can be avoided.

Innovation, not renouncement. The internal combustionengine remains the mainstay o mobility.

    The greatestpotential or reduc-

    ing consumption

    and emissions

    is provided by

    innovative, energy-

    ecient diesel and

    gasoline engines.

By reason o their high perormance, state-o-the-artdiesel and gasoline engines will remain the drivingorce o mobility until well into the uture. T his appliesto individual mobility with passenger cars especiallyin long-distance travel as well as to public transportand goods transportation by truck. The quality o ourcombustion engines is thereore the key to how muchuel can be saved over the next ew years and thequantity o emissions that can thereby be avoided. The rst o thr ee points o ocus on our road map isthereore the optimization o vehicles with internalcombustion engine. Here too, Daimler is setting storeby an intelligent combination o various strategiesthat help make both passenger cars and commercialvehicles cleaner and more economical and thus tor the uture.

Commercial vehicles in ocus. With CleanDriveTechnologies as part o the Shaping Future Trans-

With BlueTectechnology, or instance, efcient diesel engines makeor reduced uel consumption and, thanks to improvedcombustion and exhaust aertreatment, ensure lowerlevels o pollutants. Low-emission, low-noise natural

gas and hybrid drives are a urther proven alternativeto pure diesel engines in commercial vehicles, especially in city trafc. Already today, more than400,000 vehicles with CleanDrive Technologiesrom all the Groups brands are in operation withcustomers on the roads o the world and are showingthe way to attaining an ambitious goal: the zero-emission commercial vehicle.

Individual, ast, clean, sae. Our cars stand orcomort, saety, driving pleasure, and environmentalcompatibility our customers can rely on this inthe uture as well. New developments, such as theour-cylinder diesel or the latest generation o super-charged gasoline direct injection engines, are showingthe way ahead along with the use o alternative uels. However, the opportunities or optimizing the driveunit do not stop there: Our BlueEFFICIENCY packagesunite urther uel-saving eatures or gasoline and

diesel passenger cars. Depending on the model series, these include various measures carried out within theengine and a combination o numerous technologiesor reduced body weight. The customized packagesare rounded o with low rolling-resistance tires, optimized aerodynamics, and the ECO automaticstart/stop unction as a precursor to hybridization.

Hybrid drives combine combustion engines and electric motors, thus providing the best o both worlds.

A milestone or increased efciency: Hybridization madeto measure or all mobility requirements.

    The key to greatereciency and

    environmental

    compatibility lies

    in electrication

    o the drivetrain.

    For this purpose,

    Daimler has devel-

    oped a modular

    plug-in hybrid

    system.

Hybrid drives are an important element o Daimlersstrategy or sustainable mobility. Depending on thetype o vehicle and driving situation, hybrid vehiclesare powered by the internal combustion engineand electric motor either individually or in tandem.Especially in inner-city areas, this can bring about uelsavings o up to 20 percent. The key component inelectrication is the energy storage medium. Daimleris the worlds rst manuacturer to have succeededin matching lithium-ion battery technology to thedemanding requirements o automotive applicationand making it ready or large-scale production.

Flexibility in passenger cars. Hybrid vehicles withmodular electric drive components can urther in-crease the efciency o optimized internal combustionengines especially in inner-city areas. Which hybridarchitecture is the most appropriate in environmental

and economic terms also depends on the size o thevehicle and how it is used. In the passenger carsegment, hybrid solutions have been realized romthe compact smart to the premium Mercedes-BenzS-Class. The modular hybrid system, which providesa great deal o exibility in terms o per ormanceand operating range, ensures that driving pleasureis compatible with economy under all circumstances. The range o hybrid solutions rom Mercedes-Benzextends rom the convenient start/stop unction, through the recuperation o braking energy, to purelyelectric driving. A urther variant is plug-in technology, which allows the battery to be additionally chargedat a conventional household socket to increase avehicles electric operating range. A eature sharedby all these systems: Fuel consumption decreases, while driving pleasure increases.

    Daimler I The Group 2011 I The Road to Emission-ree Driving I 12-13

Sustainability Award or the Mercedes-Benz AtegoBlueTec Hybrid. For city buses, series hybrid drive isthe premium choice: The internal combustion enginesupplies a buer battery via a generator and operateswith optimum uel efciency at all times. Thanks totheir electric drive, these buses can operate emission-ree in inner-city areas.

The battery the key to eciency. As a core com-ponent o hybrid drive technology, Daimler makes useo a battery based on lithium-ion technology; this unitis superior in terms o power output and storage ca-pacity. The major advantages o lithium-ion batteriesare their higher energy density and improved electri-cal efciency, despite their more compact dimensionsand lower weight. The cycle strength o these batter-ies is particularly high, which makes or a useul lie oat least ten years under normal operating conditions.

The leader in commercial vehicles. In the commer-cial vehicle sector too, Daimler is pressing ahead withdrastically reducing uel consumption, CO2 output, and other exhaust emissions. These activities aregrouped together in the Shaping Future Transporta-tion initiative. Here as well, a key role is played byhybrid technologies, which depending on a vehiclesuse can be expected to cut diesel uel consumptionby up to one-third. Here too, tailor-made conceptsare the key to success. In the truck sector, Daimler isocusing on parallel hybrid drive, in which th e vehicleis powered by a combustion engine and an electricmotor either separately or in tandem. This cur rentlyrepresents the ideal solution among the competinginterests o production costs, dimensions, weight, perormance, operating conditions, and energyefciency, and also allows purely electric driving. Withthis approach, Daimler received the 2010 German

Emission-ree driving. Electric vehicles powered bybatteries and uel cells are key elements o sustainablemobility.

    The uture hasbegun. Electric

    vehicles with

    batteries and uel

    cells have proven

    their reliability in

    practice. Locally

    emission-ree

    driving is already

    a reality in the

    urban environment.

    Daimler is playing

    a pioneering role in

    the development o

    these technologies.

Daimler, the worlds rst car manuacturer, is nowentering the age o emission-ree electromobilitywith three series-production models. Along with thepioneer among battery-electric vehicles the smartortwo electric drive the Mercedes-Benz A-ClassE-CELL and Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL now alsorun very quietly and help conserve natural resources. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL super sportscar and the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL city van arelikewise showing the way ahead to emission-reedriving. With buses and trucks too, Daimler is makinga clear statement with models such as th e FusoCanter E-CELL and the Mercedes-Benz Citaro Fuel-CELL Hybrid. These examples all demonstrate thatDaimler is also setting store by customized vehicleconcepts in the eld o electric vehicles. In order toulll all mobility requirements, we are taking variousroutes into the uture. Whether it be with the batteryor the uel cell, electr ic drive is a key component o

    our zero-emission driving strategy.

Emission-ree city driving. By 2009, hundreds oelectric smart cars in operation in London had madeit clear where the rst generation o battery-electricvehicles could represent a viable alternative. In inner-city areas, where access restrictions and green zonesare no longer the exception, the advantages o locallyemission-ree, quiet, and highly efcient vehiclescome to the ore. In todays new second-generationmodel, one single battery charge is s ufcient to covera range o 135 kilometers on the New EuropeanDriving Cycle (NEDC). This ensures ull practicalityin city centers. Meanwhile, the Federal Departmento Transportation is promoting eight model regionsin Germany: The agship projects or electr ic mobilityin Hamburg, Bremen/Oldenburg, Berlin/Potsdam,Rhine-Ruhr, Rhine-Main, Saxony, Stuttgart, andMunich are being subsidized with 130 million

    between 2009 and 2011.

The key: energy storage media. Crucial to allelectric drive systems rom hybrid units to purelyelectric motors or cars, vans, trucks, and buses are energy storage media that are powerul, sae,and reliable. To secure its leading role in the long term,Daimler has become actively involved in Li-Tec, asubsidiary o Evonic. In addition, a joint venture bythe name o Deutsche ACCUmotive GmbH & Co. KGhas been ounded. This cooperation concentrateson the development and production o lithium-ionbatteries specially designed or automotive use.Daimler thus has direct access to the key technologyor emission-ree driving.

Going the distance. In view o their extensive operat-ing range, hydrogen-powered uel cell cars are alsoideal or long-distance travel. They are characterizedby emission-ree, quiet operation, a high level odriving dynamics, avorable acceleration, and high

efciency. In the passenger car segment, small serieso the Mercedes-Benz A-Class F-CELL and the currentB-Class F-CELL models have long since been a regularsight on the roads. And the Mercedes-Benz CitaroFuelCELL Hybrid is leading the way into the utur e opublic transport.

A trio with potential. With its near-series ConceptBlueZERO automobile, Mercedes-Benz has alreadyshown just how versatile electric vehicles can be.The modular design o this ready-to-drive studycar makes it possible to install three electric drivesystems with dierent energy sources into thesandwich oor unit amiliar rom the Mercedes- BenzA-Class and B-Class models. The E-CELL model ispowered by batteries alone, the F-CELL variant withuel cell covers a range o around 400 kilometers withno local emissions, and the BlueZERO E-CELL P LUScar attains a range o up to 600 kilometers in all using

a range extender (with an internal combustion engineas a generator) and 100 kilometers in purely electricmode.

    commitment.

Daimler not oers only a unique blend o productswith a wide variety o drive systems; it is also ourresponsibility as a company to develop the appropri-ate background or our mobility concepts. In particular,an inrastructure that is cus tomer-riendly, practical, and aordable can only be successully developedwith a concerted eort on the part o the politicalsphere, energy suppliers, and the automotive industry. In numerous cooperations and initiatives, Daimler isdemonstrating its commitment toward also makingthe automotive environment t or the vehicles otomorrow.

Rapid charging. The acceptance and thus also thesuccess o electric vehicles depend not least on aclose-knit charging inrastructure. An exemplarysolution-oriented approach is the e-mobility Berlinproject, which is using intelligent charge management

to create the ramework or emission-ree driving withbattery-powered vehicles. Similar projects have nowbeen launched in urther European cities.

The new lling stations. The H2-mobility initiativecaters to the steadily increasing number o uel cellvehicles on the roads. Together with urther leadingenterprises, Daimler has set itsel the goal o estab-lishing a comprehensive network o hydrogen llingstations. Daimler has already won several awardsor this commitment, such as the ko-Globe (Eco-Globe) in recognition o its sustainable measures orthe inrastructure.

Sharing mobility. The car2go pilot project in Ulmhas given an indication o the benets provided bymodern urban mobility concepts. Aer registeringonce, participants were able to hire smart ortwocars and leave them aer use on any o the specially

Meanwhile,Daimler has developed a urther innovative approachto urban mobility by the name o car2gether; th is isa Web-based ride-sharing community that processescar pooling requests rom drivers and potential pas-sengers by smartphone another way o remainingexible and independently mobile without a car oones own.

Priority or buses. Public transport is acing anumber o challenges, especially in rapidly grow-ing major cities. With the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)mobility concept, buses travel at short intervals alongdedicated lanes with separate trafc light phases. This ensures rapid, comortable travel even in rush-

hour trafc. BRT is a su stainable concept or theuture that Daimler has already successullyimplemented in cities such as Istanbul, Nantes, and Bogot.

An intelligent inrastructure. Regardless oindividual vehicles, an intelligent transportationinrastructure is essential or the trafc o tomorrow. For this reason, Daimler together with other auto-motive manuacturers, suppliers, and trafc manage-ment and telecommunications research experts hasalready been involved or several years in researchprojects or intelligent transport. Initiatives suchas ACTIVE, Network on Wheels (NoW), and Sae,Intelligent Mobility Test Area Germany (simTD)deal with the networking o vehicles both with eachother and with intelligent transport inrastructure.

No less than 5.5 billion people throughout the worldparticipate in trafc on a daily basis. We intend tomake the uture o mobility as sae as possible orthese people. As the pioneers o saety, we are con-tinuing along the Road to Accident-ree Driving.Daimler denes road saety as a holistic task. The pioneer o occupant protection. Bla Barnyi, the ather o passive s aety, rst outlined DaimlersVision o Accident-ree Driving back in the 1950s.One outcome o his endeavors was the rigid passen-ger compartment with crumple zones, whichcelebrated its premiere in the W 111 model seriesin 1959. To this day, th e ongoing development o thecrumple zone ensures an increasingly sae vehicleinterior. The protection o a vehicles occupants isurther enhanced with adaptive airbags, belt tension-ers, belt orce limiters, and sensor-controlled crash-active NECK-PRO head restraints. A unique synergy

o active and passive saety is provided by th ePRE-SAFE preventive occupant protection system.I the system detects a cr itical situation on the basiso inormation provided by sensors, it initiates reexmeasures to protect the driver and passengers.Further groundbreaking eatures are the passivesaety systems developed in the Shaping FutureTransportation initiative or Daimlers commercialvehicles. Optimum protection or touring coachdrivers and their ront passengers in a ront-endcollision is oered or example by Front CollisionGuard (FCG), a standard eature in the Mercedes-BenzTravego and Setra TopClass 400 coaches.

Experience counts. Road saety is a holisticresponsibility. Daimler endeavors to provide all roadusers with optimum protection and support in allsituations. In the development o active saetysystems or risk prevention and accident mitigation,Daimler employs a Real Lie Saety philosophybased on real accidents. We have been investigatingaccidents on German roads since 1969. Thesendings provide important impetus or the develop-ment o new saety technologies.

Diversity is invariably superior to monoculture. It is ertile groundthat ultimately breeds success. Diversity is a basis o our economicprosperity.

The right blend makes all the dierence. Diversitymanagement at Daimler opens up new horizons.

    All employees

    should be able to

    concepts. We

    achieve this with a

    blend o employees

    that refects the

As a pioneer and pacemaker, Daimler will continue

to play a leading role in diversity management. For us, it goes without saying that all managementsta must actively secure diversity within theirspheres o responsibility. For a number o years, diversity management has been one o the LEADcriteria or evaluating the perormance and poten-tial o Daimlers management sta. The inclusion oqualitative and quantitative diversity goals in targetagreements osters the Group-wide development odiversity competence: We see Daimlers rich diversityas a chance to achieve more together.

Diversity is more. The diversied nature o our sta

is the driving orce with which we intend to moveon together toward greater accomplishments in theuture as well. The experience, perspectives, and skillso our employees reect the diverse nature o ourcustomers, suppliers, investors, and the environment.Outstanding achievement is not concerned withgender or origin. Each and every person has apersonal prole o his or her very own. We respectthis and put to advantage the creative synergies th atresult rom a wide variety o expertise and perspec-tives. The promotion o women is the prime ocuso our diversity management; but dimensions suchas multiculturalism and an aging society likewisedemonstrate that we adopt a broadly based approachto diversity.

Diversity management is a competence in leader-

ship, communication, and cooperation that is locally, regionally, and globally established and exercisedat Daimler not only because it is politically correct, but because it brings social and economic benets.

Individuality counts. The diversity o modern

orms o living is lending increasing importance tothe balance between work, amily, and private lie.We are taking account o this development with avariety o exible working time models and with ourcomprehensive childcare oer at our sternchen(little star) day nurseries.
