PRAYING THE NEWS | AUGUST 30, 2020

“…whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

MATTHEW 16:25Dear Lord, thank you for examples in the news of those taking risks for others – the Missouri police officer who rescued a wheelchair-bound man from a coming train, the Taco Bell employee in Tennessee who gave CPR to a drive-through customer, the New Yorkers who pulled a car off a stricken pedestrian. You give courage and strength to all who respond to need in ways both large and small. Jesus, help us entrust our lives to you. Amen.

ST. LAURENCE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN 2020A few months before the beginning of each Liturgical Year, Fr. Drew shares a theme with his parish for the upcoming year. Prophetically, last August he introduced the theme Surrender to God and He Will Do Everything for You. In the midst of our characteristic busyness and positivity, with packed Sunday Masses and vibrant parish life, we listened to Fr. Drew’s words, but could never have imagined what was just around the corner for us here at St. Laurence. And throughout the world.

But like a good shepherd, our pastor guided his large flock through the pandemic, gently encouraging us to practice patience, obedience, faithfulness… and surrender to God. He related to our misery, our uncertainty and doubt, but at the same time, urged us not to give into anger and to “live this mystery as gracefully, gratefully and graciously as we can.”

In his homily on Divine Mercy Sunday, Fr. Drew consoled us with the same words St. Peter gave to members of the early Church: “Know that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. The God of all grace… will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little (1 Pt 5:10).”

So, here we are a year later. A people who have suffered, some a little, some a lot. A people who yearn for refreshment and restoration.

Today, Fr. Drew announces his theme for the upcoming year: Restored. This simple one-word theme conveys great hope. Not a promise to return to business as usual, but something better. Through our suffering – and because of our surrender – we are strengthened and restored.

What were our moments of surrender? What have we learned? How have we grown? In what ways may God already be restoring us? What are we most grateful for?

Sharon Ehrenkranz Director of Parish Life

For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried; you led us, God, into the snare; you laid a heavy burden on our backs; you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; but then you brought us relief. (Psalm 66:10-12)

FAITH & FAMILY FOCUS

Daily rituals and family traditions demonstrate to your children who you are and what matters to you.

SLCS OPENS ON-CAMPUS LEARNINGSt. Laurence Catholic School has begun the 2020-2021 school year with a gradual reopening of the campus for 660 students in PreK 4 through Grade 8. Families were given the option of remote or on-campus learning, with all students beginning online August 17. On August 24, the first students started arriving on campus, beginning with the youngest grades and slowly adding another grade level until September 4, when all students are expected to be on campus.

Special protocols, approved by local medical authorities, were initiated in order to safely open during the

COVID-19 pandemic. Homerooms are divided in half (students are assigned to either a red or blue cohort) to allow for safe-distancing. While one cohort is in the classroom, the other is in a satellite location. Additionally, parents must complete a daily health screening questionnaire, temperatures are taken at drop-off time, and everyone is required to wear a mask and keep a 6-foot distance on campus.

Extracurricular clubs, sports and activities will be reintroduced to student life as it is safe to do so. For now, faculty, staff, parents and students are just grateful for the chance to be back on campus. Please keep our parish school community in your prayers that they may continue to grow in wisdom, knowledge and grace through this challenging school year.

BLESSINGS FOR WCP STAFFFr. Jaison blessed the St. Laurence Weekday Children’s Program staff as they reopened on August 12 to care for children crib through 5 years. To ensure safe-distanced play and learning, the number of children in the program was reduced this year from 235 to 99. Eliminating the 2-day and 3-day program options also made it simpler for WCP to keep a sanitized environment for the children who are there Monday through Friday.

Many of the best practices for safety and sanitization were learned over the summer when WCP was the first early childcare program permitted by the archdiocese to open for children of essential workers.

Throughout these challenging months, Becky Wilkinson stayed on as Director, delaying her retirement to ensure a smooth transition to Ban Haller, WCP Assistant Director for the past 5 years.

A COVID-friendly farewell event is planned for Saturday, September 19. Everyone is invited to drive by the WCP entrance of the Ave Maria Center between 10am-12pm, to wave to “Miss Becky” and thank her for her loving leadership and care for young parish families for the past 21 years. Spread the word!

Q.Hey, is St. Laurence open?A.Good news, people, we are! (But with a few changes.) The church office – or as I call it, MY office – is open 8am to 4pm. If you come by, please wear a mask. It’s required. And only one visitor at a time is allowed in, just saying.

The Ave Maria Center is closed to visitors, but the staff are working. If you call the AMC, you’ll get Christy or me, cause the AMC’s phones have been forwarded to the church office. Not to worry, we can transfer you to any employee across the street. We do have Noon Mass – you know, 12 o’clock – on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; Wednesday Mass is at 6:30pm. The chapel is only open to regular scheduled adorers. Let’s me out, right? I don’t even know the code to get into the chapel, so interrogating me won’t get you in. Just saying. Hey, it’s good to be back!

This column in the Sunday bulletin is a place that parishioners may ask for intercessory prayer in their time of sickness.

How it works:• Call the parish office during business hours (281-980-9812)• The sick person must be a parishioner of St. Laurence• Request must come directly from the person (or a close family

member, such as spouse or parent)• Ask for your name to be added to the PRAY FOR THE SICK list• Your name will appear on the list for 4 weeks• Need prayer longer than 4 weeks? Simply call back and your

name will be added for another 4 week periodNot a parishioner?Ask for the name to be added to the Book of the Sick. Anyone in need of prayers for healing may have their name written in the Book of the Sick. These intentions are prayed for at every Mass. The Book of the Sick is located near the statue of St. Joseph in the church. You may write the name in the book yourself, or if you are not able to come to the church, we are happy to do it for you.

Almighty God, as we ask your help for our brothers and sisters who are ill, we ask you to help us to be healing people in our time and place. May your love touch others through us, and may we help all people to live in peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
