Department of the Month: Technology and Engineering Education

The Technology and Engineering Education Department offers all students the opportunity to develop and enhance valuable

problem solving and critical thinking skills necessary to be successful in any field of study. Students participating in

Technology and Engineering courses are more likely to be successful in and better prepared for high-tech career fields and

post-secondary education.

What’s happening in and outside of our Technology and Engineering classrooms…

Honors Computer Aided Drafting II

In our Honors Computer Aided Drafting II class, we had 50 students pass a 3 hour online exam to achieve the prestigious

Certified SolidWorks Associate certification. This is an industrial level certification that is normally taken at the end of an

engineering student’s freshman year at Penn State.

3D Printer Projects

Our Computer Aided Drafting students design, develop and draw 3D parametric

models in SolidWorks of custom chess set pieces and phone cases that are 3D

printed in our FAB Lab.

3D Printed Trumpet Phone Case

Orioles Themed Custom Chess Set and Chess Board

3D Printed Sponge Bob Phone Amplifier

Honors Engineering Design and Development

Currently 6 student engineering teams are brainstorming, designing and developing solutions to an open-ended

engineering problem. These 6 teams will use SolidWorks to draw and 3D model their solution and then transition to our

FAB lab and materials labs to actually fabricate the working prototype of their engineering solution.

The students will present their

solutions and working prototypes at

a public presentation on May 30th at

7:00pm in the high school

auditorium. This event is open to the

public so mark your calendar and

come out and enjoy an evening with

our best and brightest engineering

students.

Dallastown Video Production Club comes home with two 2nd place awards at national convention in Seattle, WA

18 students from the Dallastown Video Production Club and club adviser, Joe Klinedinst traveled west to attend the STN Convention in Seattle, Washington March 28th through March 31st. The Student Television Network is made up of affiliate schools from coast to coast with an active interest in furthering scholastic broadcasting and video production. The convention brings together students and teachers for four days of education, interaction and competition. This was STN’s 16th Annual Convention and had over 3,000 attendees. The goal of the convention is to network students and teachers with professionals who can share real life experience and advice. Students competing in the competitions are given a prompt and a set of rules and then must write, shoot and edit their stories in a given amount of time. This real world challenge pushed the students to their limits on time management, and they learned that every minute counts. Altogether eight video entries were completed on time and submitted for judging. The Commentary team had five hours to build their case for how they would run STN if they were in charge. The clever writing and production by Alexander Tolerico and Cameron Hardy earned them 2nd place. The Music Video team of Isabel Thornley, William Cuculis and Noah Branyan pushed the limits of creative storytelling that impressed the judges and earned them a 2nd place as well. This trip allowed the students an opportunity to apply the skills they have learned in class to a real world environment as well as expose them to professionals in the broadcast and film world For more info visit http://studenttelevision.com or www.wildcat.tv Specific link to the all the videos from STN: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmnMRCGdzSzO4_cvYh_Y5aAd4r1NYECIz

Spring Shorts Film Festival Currently, the Video Club is gearing up to host the 11th annual Spring Shorts film festival. The Spring Short's Film Festival is a student video competition highlighting the outstanding work of Middle School and High School students across the region. Over 60 entries have been submitted and are now in the judges hands. The screening of the winning films and awards is set for May 16, 2019, 6:30 PM in the High School Auditorium.

Honors Robotics Students use the VEX Robotics platform to develop skills in both computer programming and engineering. Students have

just finished the “training” portion of the course, where they build the basic VEX Clawbot in order to learn about a variety

of sensors and programming concepts. Students are now designing and building a “Marble Sorting Machine” that must

automatically sort and separate three different marble types. Visit Mr. Nolt’s Twitter @DtownTechEd for videos of past

engineering projects!

Honors Electronics

Students have just completed the Electronics Theory part of the course, where they learn about basic circuit theory,

schematics, breadboarding, using a Digital Multimeter, and more. They are currently working through a variety of Arduino

programming lessons and challenges using the SparkFun Inventor Kit and have begun brainstorming ideas for their final

Research & Development Project. Visit Mr. Nolt’s Twitter @DtownTechEd for videos of past R&D projects!

Maker Club

The Maker Club meets several days a week during Wildcat Period to work on a variety of projects in the Wood Lab and

Digital Fabrication (FAB) Lab. This year’s projects included a Snake Wave Pendulum for the Night of Science, restoring an

old cabinet for an elderly man in the community, laser-cut ornaments for our annual fundraiser, and a variety of personal

projects for club members.

Woods I-IV

Woods I students are learning basic woodworking safety and

processes through the completion of several projects, including a

Candy Machine and Whiteboard. Woods II, III, IV have been busy

designing projects of their choice using a CAD program called

SketchUp. In addition to the traditional woodworking equipment,

students can use a Shopbot CNC Machine, Epilog Laser Engraver,

and Roland Vinyl Cutter in the completion of their design projects.

Visit Mr. Nolt’s Twitter @DtownTechEd for pictures of past student projects!

Metal I

Students are finishing up the fabrication of sheet metal toolboxes by designing name plates in a CAD program and cutting

them out with a CNC Plasma Cutter.

Metal II

Students are completing a unit of study in welding using SMAW, GMAW, and Oxy-Acetylene processes. They will be using

these skills along with many others to fabricate a table lamp.

Metal III and IV

Metal III students were hard at work during Trimester I and II engaged in the study of manufacturing. A sale of their

manufactured projects will occur later this spring. Metal IV students are finishing up their senior year with self-designed

fabrication projects.

Child Care I and II

In Child Care and Development classes high school junior and senior students help run the Wildcat Preschool. The wildcat

preschool is in session on Monday/Wednesday mornings for 4 year olds and Tuesday/Thursday mornings for 3 year olds

during the months of September - May. In the spring there also is a session in the afternoon with 3 and 4 year olds. The

high school students plan lessons for the preschool students and then teach the planned lesson. They also spend time

observing and researching current topics in child development. This gives high school students the opportunity to gain

hands on experience with preschool age kids. Registration for the 2019-20 preschool year will open June 1st. Registration

will be available at http://danielleklinedinst.wixsite.com/child-care or through the Dallastown website.
