Despite the fact that we are still going through somewhat turbulent times in Egypt, we are happy to share some really good news with you! Only a couple of days ago, 61 new promising young researchers received their GERLS- scholarship certificates from the hands of the Minister of Higher Education, the Minister of Scientific Research and the German Ambassador. This means that more than 220 Egyptian GERLS scholars will conduct their re- search at German universities – the even better news is that by October we are expecting the first large GERLS cohort of approx. 100 scholars to come back to Egypt, freshly awarded with a PhD! We wish them good luck and will continue to assist them to be change agents for the development of the country. Positive news is also to be announced in another very pres- tigious programme; this year the incredible number of 10 full scholarships for Graduates of German Schools in Egypt was awarded to the brightest youngsters. The fantastic result could only be achieved because the DAAD has joined forces with the Sawiris Foundation which very generously sup- ports us in this programme because it believes – just like us – in investing in Egypt’s talents. There is one more set of figures I would like to share with you; never before has the bilateral scientific collaboration been our two countries been broader. 2012 saw a doubling in DAAD funding for Egypt – more than 2,000 students, graduates, researchers and administrators were supported on short-term and long-term missions both ways. 1,400 of them being Egyptians sent to Germany and approx. 600 Germans to come to Egypt. ‘Sustainable project management’: online-based continuing education programmes at universities

in Germany

‘Sustainable project management’ as online-based continuing

education is an interesting option for gaining a qualification in

a promising field while continuing to work. Many German uni-

versities offer continuing education programmes of this type.

Continuing education in project management is especially suitable

for people switching from a different field. It is ideal for specialists

with a background in economics, or experts in organisation who

are taking over the management of a project. Now more and more

degree courses and continuing education programmes are focus-

ing on sustainableproject management, because there is a clear

tendency in Germany, and in other countries, of increasing expec-

tations being placed on the social responsibility of organisations

and companies. More and more frequently it is assumed that com-

panies should ensure their conduct and manufacturing activities

are environmentally sound, make business sense and are socially

sustainable.

Transformation Partnership to be continued in 2014

After implementing the Transformation Partnership Programme in

the aftermath of the Egyptian revolution in 2011 the DAAD Cairo

office was able to successfully conduct a remarkable number of 91

projects. The Programme, which is provided by the German Federal

Foreign Office, is designed to support the transition process in

Egypt and Tunisia. It encompasses different types of funding

schemes which pay special attention to activities aiming to strength-

en Universities’ contribution to research and teaching and therefore

the graduates’ employability on the job market. Enhancing the uni-

versities internal decision-making structures towards “good universi-

ty governance” with special regards to students’ participation is an-

other aim by which the civil societal and democratic structures and

the strengthening of the scientific and technological performance in

Egypt and Tunisia are supported.

Within the last two years approximately 65 short-term measures, 15 long-term projects, 2 joint master programmes and 9 research part-nership cooperation have been carried out in Egypt. Due to the fruit-ful outcome and the ongoing demand, the Transformation Partner-ship will be extended for the coming year 2014. graduates to conduct studies in a field of their choice at a German

university. The program’s main objective is to foster the talent of

young people who, after having studies at a German institution, will

be able to contribute to the development of their country.

The program is designed for highly talented non-German graduates

of German schools abroad. Only the best 10% of the graduates with

an average grade of at least 1,5 are eligible to apply. After the pre-

selection in Egypt each of the five scholarship holders was chosen

from candidates from 53 countries for one of the 120 scholarships.

The ten scholarship holders of the DAAD are Malak Labib (DSB

Kairo), Salma Nosseir (DSB Kairo), Shaima’a Doma (DSB Kairo),

Further Trainings for 5.000 Students, Graduates and Scientists

The DAAD Kairo Akademie reports

impressive track record

Since June 2011 DAAD Cairo successfully offers further trainings

for the academic public under the roof of the DAAD Kairo Akade-

mie (DKA), closing an importing gap in the Egyptian Higher Edu-

cation landscape.

The balance after two years is impressive: With funds for alumni-

activities, research marketing and the transformation partnership

265 modules for more than 5.000 participants were offered during

the past two years. The demand is overwhelming, for a publicly

announced module at the DAAD premises around 170 applica-

tions for 25 places are being received. The DKA registered a total

of 10.000 applications in the past two years.

The DKA’s variety of topics and target groups is convincing espe-

cially. Students can prepare themselves for scholarship applica-

tions in modules such as “Self-Marketing” or “Proposal Writing”,

professors receive further trainings in various topics of teaching in

higher education and researchers learn how to administrate re-

search funds and how to publish their results in modules such as

„Research Management“ or „Communicating Science and Re-

search“. Additionally the DKA prepares scholarship holders with

intercultural trainings for their stay in Germany.

This year 25 one-day modules are delivered every month, with the

majority taking place directly at Egyptian universities and research

institutes. 21 teaching and research institutes are already steady

partners of the DKA and appreciate the offer of DAAD Cairo.

In addition to the regular modules, DKA offers special events regu-

larly. In June a renowned expert from Germany advised faculties of

Ain Shams and Helwan University in Cairo on their internationaliza-

tion strategies. In the same month a further training for young en-

trepreneurs was offered. After the summer break the so called VIP

modules on higher education management and internationalization

for will take place for the second time, this year presidents and

deans for from Cairo and Alexandria University. With “Proposal

Writing” – modules for the preparation for the new European fund-

ing programme “Horizon 2020” DKA will cooperate for the first time

with colleagues from the EU-Delegation and the Ministry of Sci-

ence.

In many ways the DAAD Kairo Akademie has proofed itself as a successful concept. At relatively minimal cost and burden an ur-gently needed service can be offered to the wider academic public. Simultaneously numerous students and researchers are becoming aware of the activities of DAAD and Germany as a study and re-search location. Existing partnerships with universities and re-search institutes have been strengthen further and new partners were brought in. The integration of DAAD alumni as participants and trainers has proven to be very effective.

More than 1,400 Egyptian students, graduates and scientists funded for study or research stays in

Germany in 2012

New statistic reveals that the German Egyptian Exchange Service

(DAAD) almost doubled the number of Egyptian academics receiv-

ing funds for short or long-term stays in Germany in the last year.

“This is a strong sign to the Egyptian Higher Education and Research

sector – Germany always was and continues to be a reliable partner for

fruitful cooperation. We as DAAD are always interested to support a

lively exchange between Egypt and Germany and we strongly believe in

Egypt’s great potential in the field of science and research. “, says Dr.

Michael Harms, Director of the DAAD Office in Cairo, which was estab-

lished over half a century ago.

The number of individuals from Egypt funded via various programmes

and projects in 2012 rose to 1,431 from 896 in the previous year. Paral-

lel the number of Germans coming to Egypt has also risen from 267 to

585. Egypt receives significantly more scholarships and funding than

any other country in North Africa and the Middle the East.

Adding to the long-standing co-funded scholarship and funding pro-grammes between Germany and Egypt, the transformation partnership, which has been established between the two countries after the events of January 2011, has made this significant raise of funds possible.
