RohitRohitKarnikisad’ArbeloffAssistantProfessorofMechanicalEngineeringattheMassachusesInstuteofTechnology.Heholdsabachelor’sdegreefromtheIndianInstuteofTechnology,Bombay,wherehewasarecipientoftheInstuteSilverMedal.HeobtainedhisPhDundertheguidanceofProf.ArunMajumdarfromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeleyin2006,wherehestudiedtransportinnanofluidicsystemsanddevelopeddevicesfornanofluidicflowcontrol,biosensing,andpaern-ing.HewasapostdoctoralassociateinthelaboratoryofProf.RobertLangeratMITfromfrom2006to2007.HejoinedtheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineeringatMITasAssistantProfessorinFall2007,wherehisresearchisfocusedonmicrofluidicandnanofluidictransportanddevicesforapplicaonsinseparaons,sensing,andanalysis.

Abstract:

MulpleMulplesample-processingstepspresentachallengefordevelopmentoflow-complexitymicrofluidicdevices.Inthistalk,Iwilldiscussnewapproachesthathavethepotenaltodirectlyseparate,enrich,oranalyzecellswithminimalornosampleprocessingrequirements.Weshowthatasymmetricreceptorpaernsthatpermittransientcell-surfacemolecularinteraconscanbeusedtodirectthetrajectoriesofcellsflowingthroughmicrofluidicdevices,withoutcapturingthecells.Thiseffectmimicscellrolling,aphysiologicalphenomenonthatplaysacricalroleincellhomingininthevasculature.Similarly,wedemonstrateasimplemicrofluidiccircuitforself-sorngofsoparclesandcellsbasedonthehydrodynamicresistanceinducedbythecellsinmicrofluidicchannels.Theseapproachesallowthedesignofdevicesforconnuous-flow,label-freeseparaonofcellsbasedonsurfacereceptorexpression,size,anddeformability.Suchdevicesmaybeusefulforbloodcounts,diagnosisofsepsisandmalaria,isolaonofcirculangcells,andotherapplicaons.
