D G 410 D NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER 2016
From the pen of DG Zwaai…..
November 2016
Fellow Lions December is upon us. The time for giving is here. Also for families to be together. Taking these two to-gether, the theme for this month is “Relieving the Hunger”, which is also one of the four legs of the Cen-tennial Service Challenge. I’m quite sure that all the clubs will during this time look after those that have less than us with no family so to speak.
On a more festive note, I’d like to remind you to register for the Centennial Celebration Convention in Cape Town. Please visit http://celebrationconvention.co.za/ for more information and the latest news-letter.
The next bit of useless information reminds me of Oom Kerneels, the Big Lion from Komga…

This was held in George and hosted by Eden Lions—what a great weekend on the “station” at their club-
house which is situated in the Transport Museum. A great meeting, excellent food and fellowship. Some
of the Club members join in the fellowship and it is always great to learn from each other and share ideas.

Eden Lions Buddy day a huge success
Many people find it very uncomfortable to talk to people with disabilities. Our society drives like-minded people to interact with each other only, a perfectly normal process as it keeps us in our own comfort zone. Interacting with people who are ... different … means we must step into their world, understand where they are coming from and their set of personal circum-stances; and then we need to respond accordingly.
The above statement becomes blatantly obvious when we interact with someone with a disability. Why is this? One reason is that people generally feel sorry for those with disabilities, and assume they are resentful for their circumstances. The truth is that this is usually not the case, many people with disabilities feel they have been given opportunities and that in some ways, their lives have been enriched by their circumstances. Another reason for our discomfort is that we feel we may say “the
wrong thing”, so tend to distance ourselves from the interaction – not true either, most disabled people are not that sensitive and are more receptive to the interac-tion than being hurt by a random misplaced comment. What’s far more important is that we respect the person and their abilities – not their disabilities. The most im-portant thing to know when interacting with people with disabilities is that they are people, and that chil-dren with disabilities are simply just children too.
For these and many other reasons, the Eden Lions em-barked on a project to foster interaction, respect and understanding between learners from our local Carpe Diem school with those from York High and Holy
Cross Primary Schools. An afternoon of fun, excitement, laughter and coop-eration means we build the foundation for adults that will be more respectful to each other, and our differences, at the end of the day.
Buddy day 2016 was a coordinated effort between the 3 organisations, and involved a range of 35 activities where learners got together in teams of either 2 or 3 to complete the range of tasks, which involved anything from eating marshmallows, racing while tied to-gether, kicking balls or even complet-ing intricate puzzles – the teamwork between the super-abled (the disabled) and the abled bodied learners being the objective. The day culminated in a party with music, food and exciting goodie bags, thanks to the sponsors who came on board to be part of this important pro-ject.
Project co-ordinator, Carl van Blerk from the Eden Lions Club, wishes to thank all who were involved and to make special mention of Mirinda van der Merwe from Carpe Diem school, who did an incredible job in the arrangements at the school. York High School and Holy Cross Primary School played an important
part in the success of the day, and a huge word of thanks goes out to both schools as well.

Eye Testing Project at our local Smutsville Primary School
A follow up on the eye tests that were done on 28 October on pupils at Smustville Primary using the Spot Vision eye testing machine has resulted in 14 out of 300 pupils requiring further testing.
A big thank you must go to local opticians John Cave and Dawid Malan for their support in this project.
Thank you Knysna Lions once again for the use of the Spot Vision eye testing machine and thank you Smutsville Primary for affording us this opportunity to test your pupils. We feel that this is a most successful project and now steps will be taken for the children to receive spectacles through Lions Bright Sight

It was a great day and was cele-brated with a fellowship after-wards at the school.
Lions Senior Supper
We held our yearly Senior supper at Voga this year and gave our seniors a great evening full of entertainment and good food.
The whole club assisted into getting things ready for this awesome project and it is one of the most supported pro-jects of the UTH Lions.
Inibos
A handful of Uitenhage Lions and their Fellow Ladies were entrusted with running the bar at this function. It was expected to cater for 400 people but expectations was exceeded and over 500 people attended. It was hard work behind the Bar and Ticket stand but in the end the Lions that was able pulled together with great success.
