This Advent at St. Raphael’s we are offering extra opportuni!es for the Sacrament of Reconcilia!on.

On Sundays, through December 22nd, confessions will be heard from 7:45 am to 8:15 am and then again from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

These Sunday opportuni!es for the recep!on of the Sacrament of Reconcilia!on are in addi!on to our regular weekday and Saturday Confession schedules.

PASTOR’S LETTER Advent and Silence…

Saint John the Bap!st has always been very popular. For example, here in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, there are six parishes named a$er him. Why is this? I think one reason is that the Chris!an faithful know deep down that the truth is

challenging. They rejoice in men and women who live the truth and speak the truth however unconven!onal or unpopular it may be, even to the point of dying for it. We are looking for uncompromising heroes. Saint John the Bap!st is such a hero.

In this Sunday’s Gospel (Ma%hew 11:2-11), Jesus says that Saint John the Bap!st is fulfilling the words of God through the Prophet Malachi: “Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare the way before you” (Malachi 3:1). Our Lord has high praise for this saint. He says, “Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Bap!st.” But then Our Lord goes on to say, “Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” What’s that about? One thing I think Christ means is that—as great as St. John the Bap!st is—he is of the Old Covenant, and doesn’t have the spiritual resources available in the New Covenant, like the sacraments, the indwelling of the Holy Trinity and communion with the Mys!cal Body of Christ, the Church. Saint John the Bap!st was a great hero, but any Chris!an can become an even greater hero. Think about that for a while.

Throughout history—and in our day as well—there are many men and women who are heroically preparing the way for the Lord. I believe one of them is Cardinal Robert Sarah. The Cardinal grew up in the West African county of Guinea when it was being governed by a brutal, an!-Chris!an communist dictatorship. He was named a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and was named the Prefect of the Congrega!on for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments by Pope Francis in 2014, making him the Holy Father’s right-hand man for those aspects of the life of the Church. Cardinal Sarah has wri%en three incredible books: God or Nothing (2015), The Power of Silence (2016) and The Day is Now Far Spent (2019). I’m in the process of reading The Power of Silence for the second !me as I am going through it with a community of Lay Carmelites who meet here at St. Raphael’s each month.

Silence has a lot to do with the liturgical season we are now in, Advent. It’s meant to be a subdued !me, a peniten!al !me, a !me to wean ourselves from

distrac!ons that would take us away from being present to the arrival of Our Lord Jesus Christ—not only the celebra!on of his birth and his future second coming, but his constant presence in the here and now.

Noise can cause us to be deaf to the presence of God. It can cause us to be dazzled by mindless cha%er and so have our percep!ons distorted away from God and toward believing the lies of the devil. This danger of noise is reflected in the sub!tle of The Power of Silence, which is Against the Dictatorship of Noise.

Cardinal Sarah reminds us that God is enveloped in silence, is silent and speaks in silence. This doesn’t mean he ignores our human need for verbal communica!on. Jesus taught in his !me on earth; the four evangelists wrote the Gospels, missionaries have preached the faith, saints have wri%en books, parents have explained and preachers have preached. All that is necessary for us to get to know who God is, and what his plan is for each one of us. At the same !me, once we know who God is, we are called to get to know him personally. We can only do that in silence—both exterior and interior silence. This inten!onal silence on our part can be misunderstood. It’s not to make it possible for us to “hear” God speaking to us in our hearts with words. He can do that, and some!mes does, but the most important way he communicates to us is by making us aware of his loving presence.

If this is hard to understand, an analogy with human love may be helpful. When a man and woman are in love, what communicates that love more—something verbal like saying “I love you,” or something non-verbal, like a look of the eyes, a smile, holding hands, a kiss or an embrace? Saying “I love you” is certainly good, and even necessary in many rela!onships, but if that were the only way affec!on were expressed, the couple’s rela!onship would be sadly lacking, and would get boring fast.

It’s the same with God. He longs to share himself with us nonverbally, with us just enjoying his company. For that to happen, we need to meet the Silent One in silence. This Advent, let’s take some !me for that. And please read Cardinal Sarah’s The Power of Silence, to help make that silence as frui+ul as it can be.

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED VIRGINIA CENTURIONE-BRACELLI Virginia was born in Italy in 1587. She had a sense of a voca!on to the religious life from an early age, but she was unable to convince her parents of this, and at the age of fi$een was married to Caspar Bracelli. The marriage was a very unhappy one; Caspar had a number of evil habits. He died only five years later. Virginia had tried to reconcile him to God and had taken care of him during his final illness. On the day of his death, she made a vow of celibacy and was determined to spend the rest of her life bringing up her two young daughters and helping people in distress. At this !me, northern Italy suffered from con!nual warfare and people were in misery. Virginia saw a small girl abandoned and lying in the street. She took her home, knowing that poor girls were at par!cular risk, o$en humiliated and exploited and with li%le hope of survival other than as pros!tutes. She found other girls in the same predicament and started a school for them. When her own daughters grew up and married, Virginia devoted all her !me and financial resources to the school and founded the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to provide teachers for it. She went on to found three more schools for poor girls. She died on December 15, 1651 and was bea!fied by Saint John Paul II on September 22, 1985. Blessed Virginia Centurione-Bracelli, pray for us!
