The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Eighteen, the Na vity of Our Lord, con nued…

The fact that God chose to begin His earthly life as an unborn baby naturally can remind us of the value and dignity of every unborn human being. Sadly, many people don’t understand their immeasurable worth. One man who does is Pope Francis. He recently gave a talk on the Fi h Commandment in which he compared procuring an abor on to hiring a hit man to kill someone. May his strong words help us to be energe c in our defense of the unborn and in helping their parents. The rest of this column consists of his talk. It’s from his General Audience on October 10, 2018, from the website ZENIT.org. The Holy Father spoke in Italian; Virginia M. Forrester wrote the ZENIT transla on. – Father Rudolph

Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning!

Today’s catechesis is dedicated to the Fi h Commandment: You shall not kill. The Fi h Commandment is do not kill. We are now in the second part of the Decalogue, which concerns rela ons with one’s neighbour. And this Commandment, with its concise and categorical formula on, stands as a wall of defense of the basic value in human rela ons. And what is the basic value in human rela ons? The value of life. Therefore, do not kill.

It could be said that all the evil done in the world is summarized in this: the contempt for life. Life is a acked by wars, by organiza ons that exploit man — we read in the newspapers or see in the television news so many things — by specula on on crea on and the disposable culture, and by all systems that subject human existence to calcula ons of opportunity, while a scandalous number of people live in a state unworthy of man. This is to scorn life, namely, in some way to kill.

A contradictory approach also permits the suppression of human life in the maternal womb in the name of safeguarding other rights. But how can an act that suppresses innocent and defenseless budding human life be therapeu c, civil or simply human? I ask you: is it right to do away with a human life to solve a problem? Is it right to hire a hitman to solve a problem? One cannot do this, it is not right to do away with a human being, albeit small, to solve a problem. It is like hiring a hitman to solve a problem.

Where does all this come from? Where do violence and the refusal of life come from? From fear. Indeed, the acceptance of the other is a challenge to individualism. Let us think, for example, of when we discover that a nascent life is the bearer of a disability, even a serious one. The parents, in these drama c cases, need true closeness, true solidarity, to face reality overcoming the understandable fears. Instead, they o en receive hasty advice to interrupt the pregnancy, which is a figure of speech: “interrupt the pregnancy” means to “do away with” someone, directly.

A sick baby is like any needy person on earth, as an elderly man who needs help, as so many poor that struggle to go on: he or she who appears as a problem is, in reality, a gi of God that can draw me out of egocentrism and make me grow in love. Vulnerable life points out to us the way out, the way to save us from an inward-looking existence and to discover the joy of love. And I would like to pause here to thank, to thank so many volunteers, to thank the strong Italian voluntary work, which is the strongest I’ve known. Thank you.

And what leads man to reject life? It’s the idols of this world: money — be er to take this away from our midst, because it will cost – power and success. These are erroneous parameters to value life. What is the only authen c measure of life? It is love, the love with which God loves it! The love with which God loves life: this is the measure — the love with which God loves every human life.

In fact, what is the posi ve meaning of the Word “Do not kill”? That God is “lover of life,” as we heard a short while ago in the biblical Reading.

The secret of life was revealed by the way the Son of God treated it, who made Himself man to assuming, on the cross, rejec on, weakness, poverty and pain (Cf. John 13:1). In every sick child, in every weak elderly man, in every desperate migrant, in every fragile and threatened life Christ is seeking us (Cf. Ma hew 25:34-46), He is seeking our heart, to unlock for us the joy of love.

It’s worthwhile to receive every life because every man is worth the Blood of Christ Himself (Cf. 1 Peter 1:18-19). One can’t scorn what God has so loved!

We must say to the men and women of the world: don’t scorn life! The life of others, but also one’s own, because for it also the Commandment “Do not kill” is true. So many young people are told: don’t scorn your existence! Stop rejec ng God’s work! You are a work of God! Don’t underes mate yourself, don’t scorn yourself with addic ons that will ruin you and lead you to death!

No one should measure life according to the deceits of this world, but each one should accept himself and others in the name of the Father who has created us. He is “lover of life”: this is beau ful. “God is lover of life.” And we are all so dear to Him that He sent His Son for us. The Gospel says, in fact: “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Hilarion was born about the year 291 of pagan parents in the village of Tabatha in the south of Gaza in Pales ne. He was sent to the city of Alexandria in Egypt for his educa on. While there, when he was about fi een years old, he became a Chris an. For a short me he stayed with Saint Anthony in the Egyp an desert, imita ng his life of extreme asce cism. The simple lifestyle suited him, but he found it difficult to cope with the distrac ons created by the many people who came to visit his famous mentor. This led him to seek greater solitude by moving back to his na ve Pales ne. There he lived at a place called Majuma, between the sea and a swamp, living a life of extreme hardship. He was said to live for several years on only fi een figs a day, not eaten un l a er sunset, un l he was persuaded to add vegetables, bread and oil to his diet so he could stay alive. Many miracles were a ributed to him while he lived there, especially curing people and cas ng out evil spirits. Hilarion suffered a lot from dryness of spirit and tempta ons to despair but persevered in prayer all the same. A er a few years he became so famous that numerous people came to see him and ask for his assistance. Some stayed on against his will, seeking to be his disciples. To seek solitude again, he moved repeatedly, including back to Egypt and to Sicily, Dalma a (now part of Croa a, along the Adria c coast) and finally Cyprus. Everywhere he went, in spite of his desire to be alone with God, Hilarion was discovered by visitors who sought help from his miraculous powers. He died around the year 371. Saint Hilarion, pray for us! La n Mass for the Feast of St. Raphael

Un l the liturgical reforms of 1970, which put the three Archangels (Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael) on the same date, each of the Angels had his own feast day.

Tradi onally, the feast of St. Raphael is on October 24th. In 2007 Pope Benedict allowed the tradi onal La n Mass, following the tradi onal liturgical calendar, to be used.

We will celebrate the feast of St. Raphael with a La n High Mass in the tradi onal form on Wednesday, October 24th, at 7:00 pm in the evening. Everyone is welcome and programs will be available to help you follow along.

ST. RAPHAEL SCHOOL RAKE-A-THON 2018!

Saturday, October 27th, is the day of the 13th annual St. Raphael School Rake-a-thon! For those of you who might not be familiar with this tradi on, this is the day that St. Raphael School

students, parents, and teachers will be raking the yards of people in our community who need assistance, and who have signed up for our help; there is no charge to the home owner. At the same me, the people at Mass have a chance to honor the school students’ raking efforts through monetary dona ons of any amount to our school. The goal of this year’s Rake-a-thon is $20,000. All of the money goes to the school’s general opera ng fund. If you would like to make a pledge to support our school students’ raking efforts, there are special envelopes at the ends of each pew.

You will also no ce blank paper leaves in the pews. These are for a tradi onal prayer tree which will be placed outside of Marian Hall for all to see during the month of October. Whether you make a dona on or not, we invite you to write out a special prayer inten on on those leaves. Students wearing their school uniforms will be at all of the exits this weekend to collect your prayer inten ons and dona ons.

We would also like to make a request for adult volunteers in the parish who can help rake with us on the morning of the Rake-a-thon. You must have completed all of the Archdiocesan “Essen al -Three” Virtus requirements for working with youth and vulnerable adults. If you would like to help us, please call the church office. There will a delicious hot lunch for all of our school families and volunteers a er a busy morning of leaf-raking.

God bless you for suppor ng St. Raphael Catholic School!

Fall is in the air, and the trees are dropping their leaves. Raking up those leaves is another

IF THE UNBORN IS A HUMAN BEING, THEN THE POPULAR DEFENSES FOR ABORTION ARE NOT VALID BECAUSE THEY FAIL TO JUSTIFY TAKING AN INNOCENT HUMAN LIFE.

Popular Defense #1: “Women have the right to privacy with their doctors.” A. We all have a right to privacy within limits, but do we allow parents to abuse their children if they do it in the privacy of their own homes? B. Clearly, the real issue is not privacy, but rather “What is the unborn?” C. If the unborn is a human being, she deserves the same protec on other children have.

Popular Defense #2: “But women should have the freedom to choose.” A. No one has unrestricted freedom to choose. B. Our freedom to choose depends on what kind of choice we have in mind. This sentence is incomplete: Women should have the freedom to choose . . . what? C. Clearly, freedom to choose is not the real issue. D. If the unborn is a human being, we do not have the freedom to choose to kill her.

Think for a moment about the following reasons people jus fy abor on. How would the fact that the unborn are true human beings nullify these reasons?

Hint: Ask if it would be jus fiable to kill any other human being for that same reason.

When answering the defense of privacy, ask if the invasion of our privacy of the limita on of our choice is ever jus fiable. It is jus fiable when someone else’s welfare is at stake. When answering the defense of free choice, ask if we can ever choose to harm another innocent human being simply for our own benefit.

Again, our freedom to choose is limited if it affects the welfare of another human being.

Eucharis c Adora on contact Be y Kreuter at 763-537-1399

Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:44-45)

Everyone who serves Jesus will be given a seat of honor in heaven! Like the apostles, you, too, are part of Jesus’ team. How is he calling you to give your life in service to him and his kingdom? Could it be praying one commi ed hour a week in the Eucharis c Adora on Chapel at the Church of St. Raphael?

Father, give me a servant’s heart.

To the couple hundred people who are already par cipa ng regularly in Perpetual Adora on, God bless you and thank you! We are grateful for the many visitors to the Eucharis c Adora on Chapel. Please consider making a commitment to a specific hour each week, or consider becoming a subs tute. (Call Barb McCalley at 763-971-8460 or complete a form to be a commi ed adorer or a subs tute.) With the winter months arriving soon, addi onal subs tutes and adorers are needed because of naviga onal difficul es for many adorers, for those who go south for the winter and to step in when an adorer is unable to fulfill their commi ed hour due to illness.

To have Perpetual Adora on there must be a least one Adorer con nuously present every hour of the day and night - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is essen al that each person sign in and out in the book on the counter by the entrance door of the Chapel. It is the only record that proves that every hour is covered. If each en re hour is not covered, then St. Raphael Parish could lose the gi of Perpetual Adora on. This means the Chapel would not be open and available 24 hours every day. An hour in need of an immediate adorer is: Saturdays: 11:00 pm to midnight

You may choose any hour that is convenient for you. It does not have to be the one in urgent need of an adorer.
