Kalia EarsleyI have no idea why Koyasu may have told you that. If you look up the kanji, the first character is the kanjiused for plum (). Perhaps you could have asked him why he told you that if he used the kanji for plum and his family

crest is a symbol for a plum blossom. But, you would have had to look up the kanji. Nagayama, remember? Please don'ttake it so personally. I'm not trying to make anyone look bad, I'm just trying to update inaccuracies. I don't have to be theauthority on Soryu to look things up, ask questions, get accurate information, and share it. The kanji for plum will always bethe kanji for plum. However, if you do want to talk to the US authority on Soryu, you should contact James Caldwell. He is agood person to have tea with. Maybe he can explain why Koyasu may have told you it meant "cherry tree."----- I'm notreally sure what tettsu-ken has to do with this. From what time to what time did you study with Koyasu? Kalia EarsleyYes, cherry blossoms are common in Japan, but "Bai Rei" does not mean strength of a cherry tree. Nomatter how you try to look at it. Kanji comes from China. Even the kanji used for "Soryu" means the same thing in Chinese,only the pronunciation isdifferent. I even checked the kanji for "bai" () in Chinese. The meaning is "plum." Japanese

pronunciation is "ume." Chinese pronunciation is "mei." When combined with the second kanji , "," (rei), the

pronunciation is changed to "bai." That is how you get the name of the kata, "bai-rei" or "Spirit of a Plum Tree." The kanjifor cherry blossom is this: . And it's pronunciation is "sakura." I can provide links to kanji dictionaries if you like. If you

have any information that proves otherwise, I am open to reading it.
