“All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”

    Abraham Lincoln

“A mother’s arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them.”

    Victor Hugo

“God could not be everywhere, therefore he created mothers.”

    Rudyard Kipling

You may be able to say something similar about your mother. If your mother is still living,

say it to her so she can hear it. Or give her a card with similar sayings.

What does the Holy Book say about mothers? The Bible has many verses about mothers. Here are a few of them:

Isaiah 66:12-13 (NIV). For this is what the Lord says: “I will extend peace to her like a

river; and the wealth of the nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried

on her arm and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort

you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem”

Proverbs 31: 26 (NIV). “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on hertongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of

    idleness.”

Celebrate your respective mothers this weekend. Mother’s Day is a National Holiday in

the United States, but it should be a special day for our mothers always.

May God bless all the mothers on this their special day.

    History of Mother's Day

t started in Rome and became a United States national holiday less than 100 years ago.

You may think it was all started by Hallmark in an effort to sell cards, but that's not the

case at all. Mother's Day dates back to the ancient Romans and made its way to the United

States in the early 1900's and finally became a national holiday in 1914.

The earliest tributes to Mother's Day date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks

dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to

their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during a

festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England the holiday

was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called Mothering Sunday.

In the United States it started with one woman named Anna Jarvis. Jarvis was an Appalachian

homemaker and she organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions of her

community. She thought the day would be best advocated by mothers and called the day

    "Mother's Work Day".

When Anna Jarvis died in 1905 her daughter, also named Anna, began a campaign to

memorialize the life work of her mother. Anna remembered that her mother said there were

many days dedicated to men but not for mothers. Anna then began to lobby the politicians of

the time to support a day dedicated to mothers. Anna Jarvis talked to many politicians

including Presidents Taft and Roosevelt hoping they would support her campaign.

Jarvis organized a church service to celebrate her mother in 1908 and Anna handed out white

carnations to those in attendance because the white carnation was her mother's favorite

flower. Anna Jarvis' hard work began to pay off five years after that service in 1913. The Houseof Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear

white carnations on the day many began calling Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May.

Finally on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the

second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

"Now, Therefore, I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of America, by virtue of

the authority vested in me by the said Joint Resolution, do hereby direct the government

officials to display the United States flag on all government buildings and do invite the people

of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places on the second

Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."

That was the first official Mother's Day and the tradition carries on to this day. In fact, Mother's

Day has flourished in the United States. The second Sunday in May has become the most popular

day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and

daughters everywhere take advantage of this day to honor and to express appreciation of their

    mothers.

Motherhood: All love begins and ends there.  Robert Browning

    To Mothers

his is for the mothers who have sat up all night with sick toddlers in their arms, wiping up

barf laced with Oscar Mayer wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying, "It's okay, honey,

    Mommy's here."

Who have sat in rocking chairs for hours on end soothing crying babies who can't be comforted.

This is for all the mothers who show up at work with spit-up in their hair and milk stains on their

blouses and diapers in their purses.

For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes. And allthe mothers who DON'T.

This is for the mothers who gave birth to babies they'll never see. And the mothers who took

those babies and gave them homes.

This is for the mothers whose priceless art collections are hanging on their refrigerator doors.

And for all the mothers who froze their buns on metal bleachers at football or soccer games

instead of watching from the warmth of their cars.

And that when their kids asked, "Did you see me, Mom?" they could say, "Of course, I wouldn't

have missed it for the world," and meant it.

This is for all the mothers who yell at their kids in the grocery store and swat them in despair

when they stomp their feet and scream for ice cream before dinner. And for all the mothers who

count to ten instead, but realize how child abuse happens.

This is for all the mothers who sat down with their children and explained all about making

babies. And for all the grandmothers who wanted to, but just couldn't find the words.

This is for all the mothers who go hungry, so their children can eat.

For all the mothers who read "Goodnight, Moon" twice a night for a year. And then read it again.

    "Just one more time."

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to tie their shoelaces before they started

school. And for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead.

This is for all the mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot.

This is for every mother whose head turns automatically when a little voice calls "Mom?" in a

crowd, even though they know their own offspring are at home -- or even away at college or

    have their own families.

This is for all the mothers who sent their kids to school with stomach aches, assuring them

they'd be just FINE once they got there, only to get calls from the school nurse an hour later

asking them to please pick them up. Right away.

This is for mothers whose children have gone astray, who can't find the words to reach them.

For all the mothers who bite their lips until they bleed when their 14-year-olds dye their hair

    green.

For all the mothers of the victims of recent school shootings, and the mothers of those who did

    the shootings.

For the mothers of the survivors, and the mothers who sat in front of their TVs in horror, hugging

their children who just came home from school safely.

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to be peaceful, and now pray they come

    home safely from a war.

What makes a good mother anyway? Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips? The ability to

nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt, all at the same time?

Or is it in her heart?

Is it the ache you feel when you watch your son or daughter disappear down the street, walkingto school alone for the very first time?

The jolt that takes you from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 2 A.M. to put your hand on the

    back of a sleeping baby?

The panic, years later, that comes again at 2 A.M. when you just want to hear their key in the

door and know they are safe again in your home?

Or the need to flee from wherever you are and hug your child when you hear news of a fire, a

    car accident, a child dying?

The emotions of motherhood are universal and so our thoughts are for young mothers stumbling

through diaper changes and sleep deprivation... And mature mothers learning to let go.

For working mothers and stay-at-home mothers.

    Single mothers and married mothers.

    Mothers with money, mothers without.

This is for you all. For all of us...

Hang in there. In the end we can only do the best we can. Tell them every day that we love

them. And pray and never stop being a mom.

Please pass along to all the moms in your life.

"Home is what catches you when you fall - and we all fall."

Please pass this to a wonderful mother you know. (I just did!)

Examples of Some Great Mothers in the Bible

There are many exemplary mothers mentioned in the Bible and let me give two examples.

    Mary the Mother of Jesus

Foremost among many religious groups is Mary the Mother of Jesus. Maybe she isconsidered the greatest because she gave birth to the Savior. Yet with this knowledge she

still raised and trained him to be a good person. She never asserted herself, except

probably at the wedding at Cana where she told the servants to do as Jesus bade them.

Mary’s life was not an easy life. Yes she felt joy and maybe some pride with the news of

Jesus good deeds. It was also a life full of grief because Jesus was always away “doing his

Father’s work.” Jesus moved His residence from Nazareth to Capernaum so Mary saw less

of her Son. The most painful part was when she witnessed His death on the cross. All of

these things she kept in her heart.

    Hannah

Hannah prayed to God for many years for a child. She never accused God of not answering

her prayers. Often she wept as she prayed, but she patiently waited for the Lord’s answer.

At long last her prayer was answered. But Hannah’s character became exemplary when

after she had a son, she dedicated him to God for a life of service. Her son, Samuel, became

one of the greatest prophets among the Israelites.

There are many more famous mothers described in the Bible, many of them became examples

of true motherhood. May our ladies gain lessons on how they may also become respected

mothers as they bring up their own children after God’s character.

One of the CyberFlashes Editors Visits Southern California

ne of the editors of the CF, Melodie Mae K. Inapan, came by Southern California,

Loma Linda to be exact, (which was a perfect place since I live in the area) on her

way to Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. She accompanies her

son, Rene DJ Inapan, who is going to have lessons in playing the organ.

I saw on Facebook that she was around so I made attempts to get in touch with her, despite

knowing that she may be having a case of jetlag. I also contacted Joy Gadia who lives in

Loma Linda. When Melodie responded to us, we told her we would drop by where she was

staying to visit with her. We had never met before, except for being a fellow editor. My

wife knew her Dad, Jun Karaan, at the former Miller Sanitarium and Hospital (now

Adventist Medical Center Cebu) when she and her classmates did clinical work at the

hospital as the first MVC-SN class.

When we first met it was as if we had been acquaintances for some time. I think that is

how the fellowship is among Seventh-day Adventists, especially MVC alumni. I texted Joy

and she said she was just about to head home from work. I told her to proceed to one of

my favorite American restaurants—Claim Jumper in San Bernardino.

    At the Claim Jumper

Joy had already reserved a table when we got to the restaurant so we proceeded to order

food despite the fact that the two of them, Melodie and Joy, were trying to catch up on

each other. It was an enjoyable time spent getting to know her better, and also enjoying

dinner. Just to make the dinner more memorable for Melodie, we ordered the

Motherlode, that 6-layer moist chocolate goodness.

The Motherlode before it was “deformed.”

How we wish we could have time together with the other editors so we could exchange

news, ideas and pleasantries. Maybe we could plan to do just that sometime in the near

    future.

    A Mother and Her Son

first met this lady, Melodie Mae K. Inapan, personally a few days ago. I sawher post in a social network site that she and her son were embarking on a trip.

The next thing I knew they were in our neighborhood. I wanted to meet her on

a more personal level as I had already “met” her indirectly through our newsletter.

Once she wrote about her family. One thing I remember about her story was that

one of her boys lost his sight when he was three years old. But at that very early

age he showed great interest in music, particularly in playing keyboard

    I

instruments. That would, of course be a challenge for an individual who has lost

his sight. But it could be done. We have heard of the celebrated blind musical talent

Stevland Hardaway Morris a.k.a. Stevie Wonder, who sings, plays the harmonica

and keyboards. He also became blind shortly after birth.

Melodie’s son Rene Derek Joseph, or DJ, is a very talented individual. He is a

freshman in college at the Central Philippine Adventist College (CPAC) in NegrosOccidental where Melodie also teaches English. He finished high school with flying

    colors.

He started piano lessons at an early age, but when the college got a new music

teacher when he was 13, this teacher, Heidi Cerna took interest in his talent and

developed in him more confidence in finding the correct keys in a keyboard he

could not see. She also developed his playing techniques.

DJ has been invited to take organ lessons at Andrews University in Michigan.

Melodie is accompanying him as a chaperon, a guide and above all as his mother.

On this trip he was booked to give a short afternoon concert at Waterman Fil-Am

Church Sabbath afternoon and a longer concert at the Loma Linda Chinese Church

on Saturday evening. Aside from playing the piano DJ also sings with a powerful

    baritone voice.

Part of his repertoire are his own arrangements of “How Great Thou Art” and

“What a Friend We Have in Jesus,”, “Prelude and Fugue XXI in B flat Major” by

Bach, “Sonata Op. 13, No. 8” by Beethoven ( three movements), “O Polichinelo” byVilla-Lobos, and “Gratitud” and “Mayon” by Buencamino, Sr. He also sang “O

Lord, Be Merciful” by Bartlett and “Take my Life and Let It Be Consecrated” by

    Havergal/Hayes.

In the audience were piano teacher Lily Pan-Diehl and her husband Hans, and

Corazon Arevalo-Coo, retired music professor .of AUP. They were amazed at his

musical talents. Many members of the Chinese Church were in attendance, as well

as Filipinos who were music lovers.

They were supposed to proceed to Michigan yesterday, Tuesday. We wish them a

safe trip, a successful time for DJ, and hopefully an enjoyable experience for

Melodie, the very dedicated mother to DJ.

Below are some pictures taken at different places by different persons during the

short time they spent at Loma Linda.

Women’s Day of Prayer By Crisofel M. Abayan

    SULADS Supervisor, Agusan Sur area

    April, 2016

The Malinawon women were very excited when I announced that there will be a big event that we

were going to celebrate. That event was the “International Women’s Day of Prayer 2016”. This

was the first time any of the women in Malinawon SDA church would experience a day of prayer.

Though we arrived late to celebrate this activity, God still gave us good health and good

weather. The program started with Sabbath School and lasted until Adventist Youth meeting inthe afternoon. I thanked God because the women happily accepted their parts for the whole

Sabbath day. We thanked God because this event inspired everyone present. We were especially

pleased with the key text that is found in Jeremiah 33:3 that says, “Call unto me and I will answer

thee and show great and mighty things which thou knowest not.” Stories in the sermon also

inspired me to speak during the worship service.

“Apo Bahe” means grandmother, a term of respect given to older women. I am not using the real

name to show respect for their culture. Apo Bahe is the oldest member in the group. She is not

yet baptized but regularly attends midweek and vespers meetings. She also keeps Sabbath as

  • 8/17/2019 Cyberflashes May 06, 2016

the rest day. At present she is in the process of decision-making because of her situation. She is

one of the wives of Datu Toos, one of the tribal leaders in Malahinte village. According to her,

she doesn’t want to go back to live with Datu Toos. She has decided to stay in Malinawon. She

exhibited great happiness during our activity. She danced and sang because of the joy she felt

inside. She was also so thankful to the Lord that she was able to come back to her homeland. Apo

Bahe is a very kind woman and I know soon she will accept Jesus as her personal Savior.

    “Feeding”

For breakfast, we cooked “champorado” and pancakes for the children in Malinawon. Because

God is so great, we were able to feed all the people in Malinawon. This was a miracle because

we thought we did not have enough to feed all of them. After a while somebody told us that all of

the people were able to eat their lunch. It was wonderful! Praise God for this.

All of us were greatly inspired because of the success of this activity. We give glory to God for

    everything.

    REAL MOTHERS...

Real Mothers don't eat quiche; they don't have time to make it.

Real Mothers know that their kitchen utensils are probably in the sandbox.Real Mothers often have sticky floors, filthy ovens and happy kids.

Real Mothers know that dried Playdough doesn't come out of shag carpets.

Real Mothers don't want to know what the vacuum just sucked up.

Real Mothers sometimes ask, "Why me?" and get their answer when a little voice says, "Because

    I love you best."

Real Mothers know that a child's growth is not measured by height or years or grade. It is marked

by the progression of Mama to Mommy to Mom.

    16 years old: Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned.

18 years old: That old woman? She's way out of date!

    A Mother at 65

With the help of a fertility specialist, a 65-year-old woman has a baby. All her relatives come to

visit and meet the newest member of their family.

When they ask to see the baby, the 65-year-old mother says, "Not yet." A little later they ask to

see the baby again. Again the mother says, "Not yet."

Finally they say, "When can we see the baby?" And the mother says, "When the baby cries." And

The new mother says, "Because I forgot where I put it."

When seniors travel they need to have lots of information with them which EMTs, medical personnel or other

The Land of the heavenly kings of Tana Toraja

ast week, I shared with you Tana Toraja which is a regency of South Sulawesi – the home of

the Toraja Ethnic Group. I had the privilege of visiting this beautiful part of the world. TanaToraja is a mecca for tourists due to its stunning scenery and vibrant culture.

From the seaside town of Palopo, it’s a 3 hour drive to the top of the mountain. Upon entering

the Tana Toraja, a change in vegetation is noticeable. One can see more pine trees. Visually its

allure is immediate, with villages of elaborately painted houses with boat-shaped roofs or the

horn of a water buffalo, and towering terraces of emerald green rice paddies. All of these are

seemingly protected by a necklace of jagged jungle-clad hills which Indonesians call Gunung bato

(stone mountain). While many people consider attending a funeral as a highlight of their visit,

Tana Toraja also offers some do-it-yourself trekking, bicycling and motorbiking through its

    evergreen landscape.

    Tongkonan

ongkonan is the traditional Torajan ancestral house. It stands high on wooden piles, topped

with a layered split-bamboo roof shaped in a sweeping curved arc, and they are incised

with red, black, and yellow detailed wood carvings on the exterior walls. The word

"tongkonan" comes from the Torajan tongkon ("to sit").

Tongkonans are the center of Torajan social life. The rituals associated with the tongkonan are

important expressions of Torajan spiritual life, and therefore all family members are impelled to

participate, because symbolically the tongkonan represents links to their ancestors and to living

    and future kin.

According to Torajan myth, the first tongkonan was built in heaven on four poles, with a roof made

of Indian cloth. When the first Torajan ancestor descended to earth, he imitated the house and

held a large ceremony. The construction of a tongkonan is laborious work and is usually done with

the help of the extended family.

    Cebuano Language

he ethnic Toraja language is dominant in Tana Toraja with the main language as the Sa'dan

Toraja. Although the national Indonesian language is the official language and is spoken in

the community, all elementary schools in Tana Toraja teach Toraja language.

Filipino which includes Cebuano and Indonesian, Javanese belongs to Austronesian language.

Austronesian languages are spoken by about 386 million people, making it the fifth-largest

language family by number of speakers. Major Austronesian languages with the highest number

of speakers are Malay (Indonesian and Malaysian), Javanese, and Filipino (Tagalog).

What really amazes me is that the Torajan Language is very similar to our Cebuano Language

which is spoken in Central and South Philippines. There were many words which is the same as in

Cebuano. For instance, Torajan count their numbers as “usa, duha, tulo, upat, lima, unum, etc”.

Many Torajan words are similar to Cebuano words like, Ulo (head), manok (chicken), dalan (road),Mahal (expensive). The names of many fruits are similar to Cebuano and etc. I think if I lived for

one year in Toraja, I could speak the local language because it is very similar to our Cebuano

    language.

    Tourism in Toraja

efore the 1970s, Toraja was almost unknown to Western tourism. In 1971, about 50

Europeans visited Tana Toraja. In 1972, at least 400 visitors attended the funeral ritual of

Puang of Sangalla, the highest-ranking nobleman in Tana Toraja and the so-called "last

pure-blooded Toraja noble." The event was documented by National Geographic and

broadcast in several European countries. In 1976, about 12,000 tourists visited the regency and in

1981, Torajan sculpture was exhibited in major North American museums. "The land of the

heavenly kings of Tana Toraja", as written in the exhibition brochure, was embraced by the

    outside world.

    The SDA church in Toraja

he work of the Seventh-day Adventist church in this part of the world is moving fast. Last

year, there were 3 new missions established in East Indonesia Union Conference, namely,

Bollaong Mangondow Mission, West Papua Mission and Luwu Tana Toraja Mission. In

Toraja we have a new mission built in the town of Palopo, South Sulawesi. Luwu Tana Toraja

Mission has 31 churches, most of them are found in Toraja. We have an Academy in Mabale where

many of our young people study.

    Closing Thoughts

    Loving God,

as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children,

so you watch over your Church.

    Bless these women,

that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers.Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.

Grant that we, their sons and daughters,

    may honor them always

with a spirit of profound respect.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.
