Smiles & Healthy Lifestyles! One of the signs that warmer weather is on the way is the sea-sonal opening of the Courtenay Memorial Outdoor Pool, hap-pening this year on June 2nd. The outdoor pool is a summertime fixture in the Comox Valley, and kids and adults have been learn-ing to swim there since 1949. Some programs at the outdoor pool may have changed some-what over the years – I don’t think they had any classes called “Liquid Muscle Aquacize” back then – but classes still include the fundamentals of learning to swim, or even how to become certified as a lifeguard. Private lessons are also available. If you’re looking for a fun activity for a birthday party or other event, a pool rental is a great option. Kids will also enjoy the ad-jacent wading pool and water park, both open free to the public. Changes for 2014 include new bleachers, wading pool upgrades, and accessibility improvements. Did you know that the outdoor pool has been heated with solar power since 2011? To find out more about the outdoor pool, or the many other programs offered by Courtenay Recreation, check out the pages of this Recreation Reporter.

One of Kara’s best memories in a class was when the major-ity of students came from one workplace. Sports

Introduction to Disc GolfDisc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, play-ers use a flying disc, or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s, and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, few-est throws). Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of tra-ditional golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree half-way down the fairway. There are few differences, though. Disc golf rarely requires a greens fee, you probably won’t need to rent a cart, and you never get stuck with a bad “tee time.” Please put your name on our interest list for a June start.

Nordic Pole WalkingSimilar to cross-country skiing in technique, this invigorating car-dio workout uses nearly 90% of your muscles by working both the upper and lower body, and burns more calories than regular walking. In this program partici-pants learn Nordic Pole Walking techniques, benefits and stretch-es, and enjoy outdoor walks lead by a certified Nordic Pole Walk-ing instructor. This easy, low-im-pact activity is a fun way to get fit! Note: Poles will be provided for participants.Instructor: Catherine Egan

As a result of feedback received from a number of neighbourhoods, City staff, and through the City’s playground review process, three new playgrounds have been installed in Courtenay neighbourhood parks this Spring. Martin Park (20th Street and Choquette Avenue in West Courtenay), Malcolm Morrison Park (Embleton Crescent in West Courtenay), and Sandwick Park (Muir Road in East Courtenay) have each received new playground structures.

Parks safety was also a key factor in the decision to replace this old equipment. These playgrounds have been replaced with new structures that meet current safety standards.

Stay tuned for playground openings in each neighbourhood.
