ImAGINE CITY WALK SATURDAYS! Imagine the streets of the inner city full of people

playing – playing chess, making art installations,

ball-room dancing, hunting treasure, singing from

balconies, reading poetry, dressing up, dressing

down, kicking a ball around. Imagine children

interviewing passersby for a radio insert, or a choir

singing folk songs, or old men playing dominoes.

Imagine teenagers dressed to upset, or a group

of street people demonstrating how to live in in-

between spaces, or a group of artists knitting a

jacket for a tree. Imagine a couple boxing, kids

jumping in a castle, or actors pretending to be the

victims of an accident.

Imagine shop-fronts temporarily designed by

design students, or paper sculptures threading

their way along the streets, or pigeons eating

seeds in the shape of a giant skull and crossbones.

If you can imagine this, you’re warming up to the

idea of City Walk Saturdays: a chance to come out

and seriously play with the rest of the city.

CITY WALK SATUR

DAYS

CITY WALK SATURDAYS TOOLKIT

1WHENThe 3rd Saturday of every month, between 10am

and 2pm.

WHEREThe pedestrian corridors of the inner city:

Waterkant/Fanwalk; St Georges Mall;

the Company’s Garden

WHOYou and your connections. You and your

students. You and your peers. Citizens, groups,

organizations and projects are encouraged to

show up at Play Saturdays, and do something

playful or creative. It can be something small,

something last-minute, something ultra-low

cost. As long as you tidy up behind yourself, and

anticipate all kinds of people being in the city on

Play Saturdays, your contribution to the public

life of the inner city will make a difference.

HOWThe event is being facilitated and championed by

Cape Town Partnership, but is a citizen-led

project. As the months go by, more and more

people will find ways of using Play Saturdays to

learn, play, and connect. Use what you have.

Take small risks. Make it better every month.

2City Walk Saturdays offer rich opportunities for

arts/design students and lecturers to use the

public areas of the city as places to test and

develop new works, show to new audiences,

experiment, have fun. The earlier you try

something small at a City Walk Saturday, the

sooner you’ll see what potential the event has for

community engagement, partnerships, outreach

and on-the-ground involvement in urban cultural

development. As City Walk Saturdays grow,

more and more institutions and faculties will

start collaborating with each other: journalists

with fashion designers; filmmakers with artists;

graphic designers with dancers. Make history.

3IF YOU ARE A bUSINESS:Is there something fun and playful – and

low-risk! – that you could do on a City Walk

Saturday? Perhaps you and a couple of

neighbouring shops can set up a treasure hunt

for clues in each shop, and give away a small

prize for whoever gets all of the clues. Maybe

you can make a big, cheap enlargement of a

crossword, and put it in your window – or put a

table outside your shop, with a cheap puzzle that

passers-by can help put together. If you are a

food outlet, maybe you can invite your customers

to bring their boardgames and play with each

other.

4IF YOU ARE A FAmILY:Come into the city with your family – maybe by

train or minibus taxi. Come and see what others

are up to, or do something playful of your own.

Bring a picnic, and eat it on a city bench, under

one of the city’s beautiful trees – or on the lawn

in the Gardens.FAMILY FIRST
