Artist Sharon Schock’s StoryShowcased for the cover

of the 2011-2012 Business Directory and Destination Guide is “Linden Avenue” by local painter, Sharon Schock. Sharon has studied art for most her life, finished her first oil painting at age 5, and graduated from Westmont College in 2006 with a BA in Fine Art. After a couple years of hard work and searching she finally found her niche. Preferring to paint alla prima,

she would call herself a “daily painter” in that she finishes one painting per day. To stay motivated she started a blog which showcases each new painting in daily posts and that has helped to sell her paintings, making them accessible to people worldwide. She has collectors in almost every state and in 6 countries. ”It’s fun to know my paintings are in places that I’ve never even been to,” explains [email protected] (661) 435-2332 sharonschock.com.

Island View NurseryNestled in the foothills of Carpinteria, Island View is unique - a nursery unlike any other. Kids Have Fun in CarpinteriaTreat your children to an electric Seaside

Shuttle ride around town. It’s inexpensive and adds lots of fun! Rincon Cycles (Carpinteria Ave) 684-9466 rents bikes of all types. Once you have the lay of the land, check out Carpinteria’s “World’s Safest Beach” because it’s wide, clean and perfect for families with kids.

Children love to investigate the tide pools along the shoreline and the flora and fauna along the trail through the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. Visit the Carpinteria Museum of History (on Maple Ave) to find out how and why Carpinteria was settled many years ago. Then spend time to purchase a great ‘take home’ book or gift or attend an event at the Curious Cup Bookstore (on Linden Ave). Or Kraft-It (on Linden Ave) caters to imaginations, so pick out a new project. For kids & adults visit United Studios of Self Defense (on Linden Ave) for world class martial arts lessons and Curtis Studio of Dance (9th St) for dance lessons.

A trip to the Harbor Seal Preserve Rookery, between December and May, is a great adventure, where kids can check out the new seal pups and their parents in the wild. Stop for an “All-American Surf Dog” at the stand near the rookery….yum!

For dessert….visit Crushcakes & Café (on Carpinteria Ave) and stop at Robitaille’s Fine

Candies (on Linden Ave), which is a ‘don’t miss’ opportunity to see how candies are made.

Carpinteria Community Pool (corner of Carpinteria & Palm Aves) offers open swim hours for kids and parents. Reserve a City public tennis court (566-2417) or learn to kayak or surf at the Carpinteria Boathouse (684-7613) or email [email protected] . The Plaza Playhouse Theatre (on Carpinteria Ave) offers plays, movies and events for the whole family. Visit plazatheatrecarpinteria.com. For a most memorable children’s event, contact Colorful Enterprises at shadezenhues.com.

Carp Sports (on Casitas Pass Rd.) offers a wide variety of camping and sporting goods for kids & adults and Ark Pet & Supply (on Casitas Pass Rd.) has everything you need for your pets.

In addition to the new Tomol Interpreta-tive Play Area (on Linden Ave @ State Park), there are many great Carpinteria parks created for picnics, walking, hiking, rock climbing, or relaxing (see page 75).

And…the Santa Barbara Zoo is just up the road (sbzoo.org).

Tomol Interpretive Play AreaTomol Interpretive Play Area, located on

Linden Avenue within the State Park, is unique and educational and took nearly eight years in the making.

Families are treated to a recreational experi-ence unlike any other—a replica Chumash village designed with opportunities to run, jump and slide while developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of California’s cultural and natural history. Designed to emulate pre-European life

on the California Channel Islands, this play area includes life-sized replicas of native wildlife species to climb on, Chumash huts to explore, the “Rainbow Bridge” of Chumash lore and the park’s namesake “Tomol”—a traditional Chumash plank boat.

This has all been made possible by a partner-ship of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning (the initiators), the City of Carpinteria, the California State Parks, with the support of the community.

Sometimes the best things come in small packages. This is certainly true when it comes to DAC International, Inc. Tucked away in a nonde-script building in Carpinteria’s industrial park, few area residents are aware that this relatively small company (averaging 35-40 employees) has made and continues to make significant contributions to the production of contact and intraocular lenses throughout the world.

Established in 1964 in Santa Barbara, DAC moved to its present location in Carpinteria in 1980. Since that time, it has maintained the

loyalty of a small group of dedicated and gifted employees, many of whom have been with the company for more than 20 years.

The close-knit, family atmosphere engen-dered by founder Ed Vernon and fostered by recently retired president and local Carpin-teria resident, Jim Drain, has attracted both employees and customers who appreciate doing business with a personal touch. The resulting work environment has produced a series of ground breaking innovations, including the world’s first computer controlled contact lens lathe, automated part handling, patented toric lens generation and the most advanced digital technology available for the production of specialty lens designs.

In particular, DAC lens production software has made giant strides in the customization of lens fit and correction. The company was the first to develop software for the creation of aspheric designs for contact lenses. With the recent acquisition of a high-end, ultra-precise lathing system, the possibilities for specialty lens designs have increased even further.

In February 2011, Peter Brierley was appointed as president of DAC. Peter brings 40 years experience in the lens manufacturing industry and has been a member of such notable companies as Allergan, Bausch & Lomb and Coopervision. Under his guidance DAC

looks forward to further growth and innovation, with continued emphasis on customer support.

This small company from a small town now has more than 1,000 machines installed in over 30 countries and continues to make far-reaching advancements in its quest to help solve vision problems worldwide.

The Carpinteria High School Organic Farm broke ground in June of 2009 on nearly an acre of land that used to be asphalt basketball courts located between the animal barn and baseball field. The land is being developed into an orchard with cherimoya, avocado and citrus trees, three small pastures for farm animals being raised by students (chickens, turkeys, goats, lambs, pigs, rabbits and steers), and permanent raised-bed fruit and vegetables for school district cafeteria meals. Soil building is carried out using compost made onsite with many materials including food waste from school cafeterias, brewery waste, grounds main-tenance cuttings, tree wood chips, and animal manure and bedding. Carpinteria Beautiful

donated a stand-alone solar photovoltaic power system that powers the compost tea brewing tank and lights for the farm shed; off the grid! Students from the Agricultural Academy and the Culinary Arts Academy at the High School use the farm and its harvest in their classes. Students also collect community service hours for graduation by helping out at the farm. Younger students from throughout the district and beyond tour the farm and learn more about how food can be grown without chemical inputs in a more sustainable and healthy envi-ronment. This unique facility for education was made possible by an Orfalea Founda-tion grant and the largess of the Carpinteria Unified School District.

As Environmentally Green Growers here in Carpinteria, we grow the finest quality gerberasusing state-of-the-art technology and the most up-to-date Integrated Pest Management and disease controlstrategies. Our production greenhouses are fully automated with computer-controlled environmental andirrigation systems that recycle the water. Each gerbera variety we grow is thoroughly tested before planting toensure plant quality, hardiness, ability to produce high yields, and resistance to common diseases and pests.

Our environmentally friendly farming methods include growing our flowers hydroponicallyin a blended peat moss media; preventing foliar diseases by creating adverse conditions fordisease and eliminating germination of infectious spores by controlling the temperature andhumidity inside the greenhouses; acquiring a controlled climate by using passive ventilation, shade and heat retention curtains, horizontal air f low, and a hot water heating system thatcirculates heat through the planting zone; utilizing natural biological systems, such as predaciousand parasitic organisms, to naturally control pest infestations—simply stated, our good bugseliminate the bad bugs! In addition to leading the way in protecting our local environment,we continuously support several very important non-profit organizations in our community.

When Carpinteria Greenhouse Flower Growers say that they are “Green”, it isn’t just an over used popular slogan. Our greenhouses are state-of-the-art technology with the most up to date environmental computer systems, integrated pest management and disease control. Sophisticated software ensures that water and energy are used to their optimum effi ciency, which eliminates waste and minimizes our carbon footprint.

Most crops are now grown hydroponically, this means optimal use of water, and nutrients. Excess water and fertilizers are captured, sterilized and used again to irrigate the crops in a closed loop system which saves valuable resources and prevents runoff .

Since the environment is controlled, greenhouse grown crops lend themselves to a successful Integrated Pest Management program. Th is means that by closely monitoring the crops most harmful pests are controlled biologically. Benefi cial, predacious insects are released that will either eat or parasit-ize the plant eating pests; this results in even more benefi cial insects and less pests. Th is practice has led to a drastic cutback in the use of chemicals and provides for one of the cleanest and safest agricultural environments to work in.

In addition to being a vital part of the Carpinteria business community, we also take pride in supporting many non-profi t organizations that provide essential services to our unique and special town.

Visitors and residents agree, Carpinteria is a special place to vacation, live, work, and raise a family. There are few places with such a picturesque setting, lovely beaches and coastal hills, perfect climate, and relaxing atmosphere. Carpinteria is a rare thing to find in southern California: a coastal city that has kept its small town charm, family atmo-sphere and natural beauty.

A south-facing coastline gives our tranquil commu-

nity its broad sandy beaches, ideal for swimming, surfing, or strolling on the sand. One can sit on the beach and see amazing sunrises and sunsets, with views of the Channel Islands. You might watch dolphins playing in the surf, then dust off the sand and walk or bicycle home. Or stroll through downtown Carpin-teria for wonderful restaurants, galleries and shops.

Carpinteria has tennis courts, a community pool,

and beautiful parks with play-grounds and facilities for sports, picnicking, and enjoying the sunshine. People come from far away to visit our Salt Marsh Nature Park, Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve, and protected seal sanctuary.

Our intimate downtown area is often active with a weekly farmer’s market, First Friday merchant events, and holiday celebrations. Each year, the town hosts the Orchard to Ocean Run and the famous California Avocado Festival.

Carpinteria’s commerce ranges from flower growers and avocado orchards to manu-facturing firms and corporate offices. On the east end of town, many businesses have bluff-top ocean views.

Ho m e s a re av a i l ab l e for sale at the beach and throughout the valley. So if you are thinking of a vaca-tion getaway or life in a small town, there’s no better time to buy. You will find a warm and friendly community and many new friends to welcome you to our seaside paradise.

Welcome to Carpinteria

The Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD) takes pride in its schools. With one comprehensive high school, two small alternative high schools, one middle school, and four elementary schools, CUSD serves approximately 2,300 students. Further, the District, in partnership with mulitple public and private entities, maintains the Carpinteria Children’s Projec at Main (CCPM), a comprehensive early childhood program that works to ensure that all students are ready for kindergarten. District boundaries, beyond Carpinteria proper, reach south to the Ventura County line and

north to Summerland. High academic achievement for all students is the District’s main goal. As

such, the District implements coherent instructional programs to ensure grade level mastery of the state’s academic content standards in the core subjects. Getting to mastery, in addition to excellent teaching, involves activities and programs that allow students and their families to “connect” to their school in a way that instills confidence and motivation. Go to any CUSD school and you will see students participating in enrichment activities, athletics, the arts, field trips to local destinations and beyond, after-school programs, and community events.

Parent education and involvement are also essential to academic success and so, beyond creation of the CCPM, schools offer numerous programs and activities to fully engage parents.

Finally, no district can achieve excellence without the support of its commu-nity. Notwithstanding the substantial support of numerous private foundations, the district appreciates the support of its own Carpinteria Education Founda-tion (CEF) which provides grants to teachers, funds enrichment programs and fundraises for special projects. To get involved, contact Development Director Patricia Alpert at (805) 722-5909.

You can keep track of the district’s activities, events and initiatives by visiting www.cusd.net

The Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF), a nonprofit organization of volunteers formed in 1993, provides financial assistance and support for public schools in the Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD). CEF’S Mission is threefold: 1. To Promote Excellence in Education; 2. To Channel Private Sector Resources to the Carpinteria Unified School District; 3. To Inform and Involve the Community in the Needs of the School District. Since its inception, CEF has distributed close to $500,000 towards the enhancement of educational opportunities for Carpinteria and Summerland students. CEF needs your help to build on its success and make its programs the absolute best for all students. To donate, all you need to do is contact CEF at 805-722-5909. By giving to CEF, you are giving to your community. YOU are making your community better for its youth.

The Carpinteria Children’s Project at Main

A quiet crisis is threatening the future of many children in our community–one that compromises their potential to succeed and fails to fulfill the promise of their future. This crisis is the readiness gap that begins long before the first day of kindergarten and often results in struggles and loss of self-esteem that can ulti-mately result in school failure. The Carpinteria Children’s Project at Main seeks to address the readi-ness gap and pave the way for their success in elemen-tary school and beyond. By providing a strong foun-dation of early childhood experiences, before a child enters public school, we can ensure a strong foundation of skills and competencies that lead to school success and ultimately, increased community economic and social stability.

The Project goal seeks to touch virtually every aspect of Carpinteria as every aspect touches a child: business, faith-based orga-nizations, schools, govern-ment , and indiv iduals across the generations. We cannot address every social problem facing every child and family in Carpinteria, but through our collab-orative approach we can powerfully create a dynamic system that links services, builds a comprehensive pathway of care for fami-lies, and facilitates a theory of change as indicated in

our aspirational goal: All Children entering Kindergarten in the Carpinteria Unified School District will meet kindergarten ready expectations and be succeeding in 3rd grade.

To learn more about this Project, phone (805) 566-1600, M-F, 8am-5pm.

The 2011 Rods & Roses Premier Car show will take place on Saturday, July 2, 10am, Linden Avenue. The Classic Car Show will feature over 150 pre-1980 American classic cars. Held in Carpin-teria (home of many cut-flower growers) this unique event also offers flowers and bouquets for sale to benefit local non-profits.

A Friday night showing of American Graffiti at the Plaz a Theater starts this independence weekend.

Rods & Roses started in 1998 at the Amtrak parking lot with about 20 classic cars, music and a souvenir t-shirt. Today there are over 150 classic cars along Linden Avenue, locally grown flowers, over 15 non-profit and service organi-zation booths as well as crafts, contests & “Mr. Indy 500,” Andy Granatelli, as Celebrity Grand Marshal.

The Carpinteria Triathlon, a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, is a very exhilarating community athletic experi-ence, The 14th Annual Carpin-teria Triathlon is scheduled for September 25th, 2011. Over 850 participants from all over the country are anticipated to take on the challenge of either the Olympic Course (1.5k swim, 40K Bike, 10K Run) or the Sprint Course (.5K Swim, 15K Bike, 5K Run). Over 170 local, dedicated volunteers will help ensure a fun and successful event.

The event’s first challenge is a swim along the Carpinteria Beach. Known as the “World’s Safest Beach,” the ocean waters in Carpinteria are usually calm, with gentle surf and currents. The event’s bicycle route courses through the area foothills known for their picturesque oak groves with mountain and ocean views. Both the Olympic and Sprint courses offer the competitor a challenging ride, although the sprint course is also very well suited for the novice triathlete. Finally, participants run through

Carpinteria on a flat course, motivated by cheering specta-tors to a finish in the Carpinteria State Beach.

Proceeds from the Carpin-teria Triathlon help benefit the City’s Parks & Recreation youth programs such as the age group swim team, ocean recreation programming, and Carpinteria’s Junior Lifeguards.carpinteriatriathlon.com

Traveling around Carpinteria is a joy. From the Santa Barbara Airport or the Amtrak Surfliner (that stops in Carpinteria) to the electric-powered MTD Seaside Shuttle and bus services, Carpin-teria is almost ‘Car-Free” thanks to SBCAG’s Traffic Solutions.

If you’re new in town, begin with the electr ic-powered Seaside Shuttle Service, which travels around town, making short stops at local shops, restaurants & hotels. Contact sbmtd.gov for the various schedules to take an alternative-fuel powered larger local bus or visit goventura.org for a Vista bus schedule to Santa Barbara and Ventura . . . and check out the entire coastal area, while you’re in town.

R e a c h i n g C a r p i n -teria from Santa Barbara or Ventura on an Amtrak train, is very convenient. If you fly into and out of LAX, check the schedule for the Santa Barbara Airbus, which stops in Carpinteria. If you use the Burbank Bob Hope Airport use Amtrak to connect.• Vista
