Recruited into Parkwood Leisure to lead on the set up and operation of the most significant facility at the time, I was successful in delivering one of the companies most prosperous facilities that far exceeded expectations in terms of visitor numbers, turnover and profit. Under my remit the facility delivered profits of just under £600,000 per year with an annual turnover of approximately £3.5m.

Whilst in this position, I also drove a passion for training and development of the workforce. This created the aspiration for Parkwood Leisure to create its own in house training academy, with Cardiff being the first facility to deliver the program fully and lead the company.

As an established Manager, I was asked to cover the site to resolve all the issues. Using various management skills I created a cultural change amongst the work force and brought the facility into the heart of the community. After proving successful in this role, I was then asked to manage Cardiff Council’s flagship facility following the removal of the previous manager. The relationship between management and the staff was extremely strained and trade union involvement was therefore at a peak. Using an open management style that fully engaged trade union representatives, the relationship with the workforce was redefined and significant improvements in the performance of the facility were achieved.
