UltraLink Cable®

UltraLink Cable® MakesThe Best Connections

Both of our UltraLink Cables® were designed to provide thebest transmission lines for your applications. The smaller UltraLinkCables are designed to be electrically and mechanically efficientfor mobile applications. The new UltraLink Cable 93605 is designedfor medium length run base station applications. It is the lowestloss RG213 size cable.

When we designed these cables, we started from scratch.UltraLink cables are easily installed, low loss, and compatible withreadily available connectors.

1

Mobile UltraLinkWe started with a solid center conductor for the secure attachment of crimp-on connectors.

We insulated it with a layer of low loss Teflon® dielectric which withstands the high temperaturesencountered in mobile applications.

Next we applied a layer of easily removed friction bound aluminum foil for 100% shielding. On top of that, we added tinned copper braid with full 95% coverage for good grip to theconnector's outer shell. Finally, we selected a smooth, tough PVC jacket. The result is UltraLink92463 (white) and UltraLink 92887 (black) RG58-size cable.

Base Station UltraLinkIn designing the ultimate medium run base station cable, we

began with a different set of goals. The center conductor issolid copper for the same reasons; it is low loss and aids in solidconnection of crimp-on connectors. Next, we added a layer offoam polyethylene whose velocity of propagation is 89% that ofair. This fact adds significantly to the low loss characteristicsof the cable but it prevents the migration of water through thedielectric. Next, we add a layer of foil and a 95% coveragebraid. The jacket is black PVC which withstands sunlight andweathering for many years.

800/900 MHz YAGI SPECIFICATION CHART

800/900 MHz Yagis2 Our PC Yagis are

all-welded and weatherproofed

Ruggedized mounting, all-welded joints, and complete weatherproofing are yours withCushcraft 800 and 900 MHz Yagis. At these frequencies, antenna construction is critical, soCushcraft/Signals engineers used special techniques to develop antennas that will last. Forexample, our 6, 10 and 13 element Yagis are mounted with two large stainless steel U-bolts.As in all PC Yagis, the elements are welded to the boom. These welds are on the inside of theboom to enhance electrical performance.

Which polarity do I choose?

In selecting or mounting antennas, you will occasionally be given achoice of vertical or horizontalpolarization. Some antennas, likeomnidirectional models, are fixedpolarity. Other antennas, such asYagis, are often able to be mount-ed in either plane. The wavesleave Yagi antennas in the sameplane as the elements. If theelements are up and down, thepolarity (or polarization) is vertical.

It is desirable to have antennasat both ends of the communica-tions link of the same polarity.Mobile systems traditionally haveall antennas vertically polarized. This is most convenient becausemobile antennas inherently exhibitvertical polarity. For dedicatedYagi-to-Yagi links either polariza-tion may be selected but be sureto choose the same for both endsof the path.

Cushcraft/Signals has developed enclosedomnidirectional antennas that are just rightfor outdoor and indoor applications in the806-958 MHz range. All of the antennas inthis series feature plated copper laminatedradiators, weather-proof fiberglass housings,UltraLink Cable® pigtails, type-N connectorsand DC grounded radiators. Mounting hard-ware is included.

Antennas are available covering conven-tional 800, SMR on 800 and 900 MHz andthe spread spectrum range of 902-928 MHz.Gains of unity, 3 dB and 4 dB are available.

How long is a wavelength?

Sometimes you may be givenmeasurements concerning anten-nas in wavelengths. You may beable to relate to them better if theyare in feet, inches or centimeters. Here is how to make the conver-sion. The formulas here are forpropagation through air. For freespace calculations, the numera-tors would be slightly larger.

Wavelength = 11803 / Frequency;in this cas the frequency must bein MHz and the wavelength is ininches. To find the wavelength inmeters use:Wavelength = 285.63 / Frequency, where frequency is again in MHz.

Flexible MobilesCushcraft/Signals has developed a breakthrough

in mobile antenna design. Our new elasticizedmobile antennas are more resilient and morewaterproof than any others. This same ultra-violetstabilized polymer is used in many automotivecomponents. The flexible enclosure skin resistsstructural blows, weather, and all contaminantssuch as acid rain, gasoline, sunshine, broad swingsin temperature, etc. Our testshave cycled this design througha temperature range of +135degrees F to -40 degrees F manytimes. We have applied severevibrations (to simulate high speedlong term travel). We have struckthe base, center and top of theantenna hundreds of times toassure ourselves they will with-stand tree limbs, garage doorsand other low clearances. Theseare a few of the many tests wehave subjected the SX series to.

With this design the entire base is one piece. This eliminates the opportunity for rain to leak intothe antenna. We have built the necessary washersinto the base so that both the cost and the botherwill be a thing of the past.

Flexible, Standardor Economy?

Our new flexible base antennasprovide advantages in longevityand ease of installation. They offera new technology for the mobilemarketplace. Our Standard designoffers the same electrical qualitiesin a more traditional package. Oureconomy models have a flexibleradiator and plate-to-plate contactmounts for situations where flexi-bility is important. All three includeall-brass hardware and your choiceof UltraLink Cable or RG58A/U.

Double Your Gain

You can double your antennasystem gain by doubling the num-ber of identical antennas used. For example, if you designed asystem that required more gainthan is available with one of ourlarge 450 MHz antennas (thePLC-4510 with 11.1 dBd), youcould use two of them. The resultwould be almost double the gain(a 3 dB increase to 14 dBd). Thealmost comes in because therewould be a little loss in the cablesand connectors used to connectthem together.

You have a choice when ap-proaching this project. If theantennas are placed ("stacked")side-by-side, the beamwidth fromside-to-side would be reduced. If you stack the antennas oneabove the other, the verticalbeamwidth would be reduced. Itis simpler to stack antennas oneabove the other because it elimi-nates the need for additional tub-ing and mounting brackets. Thus,it is less expensive.

The distance between the anten-nas is critical. Various spacingscan create different results. Forspecific help, contact our TechSupport Department. As a ruleof thumb, the following calculationshould work fairly well.

Stacking distance(in wavelengths) =

∏ tan [450- (30 beamwidth inappropriate plane / 2)]

What cable do I choosefor my Base Station?

Coaxial cable is like any wire in thatit has attenuation which is a lot likeresistance. Resistance, however,is a measurement used at loss ata frequency of 0 Hz (DC). Coaxialcable attenuation is a function of,among other things, length, cablesize, dielectric material, shieldingand frequency. Bigger has lessloss but bigger also costs more. Insome cases, a lot more. The gainof your antenna system is the gainof the antennas less the loss in the

coaxial cable be-tween the antennaand the radio. Thefollowing chart illus-trates some popularcables.

Attenuation (loss) per 100 feet (Decibels)Cable Type 150 MHz 450 MHz 900 MHzRG-58 5.7 10.5 16RG-8 2.3 4.3 7.6RG-213 2.3 4.3 7.6TL92887 5.1 9.5 14.0TL92463 5.1 9.5 14.0TL93605 1.5 2.7 4.11/2 Hardline .7 1.4 2.157/8 Hardline .4 .8 1.2

Data YagisDirectional Yagi Antennas

For Spread Spectrum Applications

Spread spectrum applications require antennas that are both low noise and high gain. Cushcraft/SignalsYagis offer this and more. They are available in four gain levels to meet your exact need. There are severalfactors to be considered in the selection of a Yagi antenna. Very basically, Yagi antennas are directional. They are similar to a typical TV receiving antenna. Gain measures the "strength" of the antenna. It is similarto a measurement of focus. The narrower the beam the Yagi focuses, the more the gain. Initially mostcustomers ask for the most gain possible until they learn of trade-offs. Generally, the more gain an antennahas the larger it is. It could be more costly. It certainly would be more difficult to aim because of its narrowerbeamwidth. It might require a more substantial support. Conversely, it might enable your system to reachdistances otherwise not attainable. It might allow data to be sent at faster rates.

Other factors to consider in the selecting of any antenna might be the environment. Will it be windy andicy? Or, will it be inside a window looking outward? Will it be on the roof of a San Diego factory? Or, willit be on the top of the World Trade Center in New York? Does it need to look nice or is it out of sight?Whatever your criteria it is likely that Cushcraft/Signals Yagis can meet your demands. They are cleanlybuilt, feature welded joints and fixed enclosed feed systems. The clean design means that they are aesthetically pleasing. The welded joints result in extremely long life. Using a fixedenclosed feed system eliminates curious hands from makingunwise adjustments.

Does polarization matter?

In selecting or mounting antennasyou will occasionally be given achoice of polarization. The wavesleave antennas with certain polar-izations the most common beingvertical or horizontal. Some anten-nas, including most omnidirectionalmodels are fixed polarity. Otherantennas such as Yagis and patch-es are often able to be mounted ineither plane. The waves leave Yagiantennas in the same plane as theelements. It the elements are upand down the polarity (or polariza-tion) is vertical, for example. Otherantennas exhibit the same charac-teristics but their polarity is not asobvious.

It is desirable to have antennas atboth ends of the communicationslink of the same polarity. Althoughsignal polarities change as theystrike objects enroute from thetransmitting antenna to the receiv-ing antenna, most communicationssystems traditionally have all anten-nas vertically polarized. For dedi-cated Yagi-to-Yagi links either po-larization may be selected but besure to choose the same for bothends of the path.

Antenna Selection Criteria

Before you can make an informedantenna selection, you must knowthe following: What frequencyrange should the antenna cover? What gain is needed? If you don'tknow the exact gain you shouldbe able to describe the systemusing the antennas. For example, how large is the area? What ob-structions are in the area; build-ings, trees, shelves, walls etc.?You should know how the antennawill be mounted or at least howyou would like to mount it. Withthis information you can eliminatea number of alternatives.

Currently the most popularspread spectrum systems are op-erating in the 900 MHz area or inthe 2.4 GHz area. These are yourbasic choices for spread. Otherdata applications take place any-where from 25 MHz to 5.9 GHz.Some antennas outside of the 900MHz and 2.4 GHz ranges arefound elsewhere in this catalog. If you don't see what you need orhave any questions, please callthe factory.

Data Transmission OmnisStandard Data Transmission Omnis are fully

decoupled antennas built on a copper laminateand housed in 0.100 inch wall fiberglass housings. They may be mounted right side-up or tippedupside down depending upon the desired pattern. They also feature a very versatile clamp mountingsystem that will fit most every situation you willencounter.

Omnidirectional antennas are the right choice forsituations where you need to be in contact withsources that are in two directions or if you do notknow what direction the signals will be coming from.Receiving signals from two well-heads that are indifferent directions is an example of the former. An example of the latter would be a warehouseenvironment where a worker with a handheld ter-minal is moving about the area while sending andreceiving data.

2.4 GHz and 5.7 GHz OmniElevated Sleeve Dipole for Base Stations

The Cushcraft elevated feed sleeve dipole is an excellentantenna for low cost omnidirectional ISM band access pointapplications and Wireless ISM band PBX base station applications. The antenna comes in a neutral colored, weatherized housingand is suitable for either indoor or outdoor use.

The antenna is available in 2 connector configurations. Thefirst is a threaded base which incorporates a pigtail and subminiatureconnector. In this configuration, the threaded base is used tomount the antenna to the base station housing and the pigtail and

subminiature connector mount directly to the RF board inside the housing. This is useful for designs wherean external RF connector is not a practical alternative. The second configuration is a standard RF connectorat the base of the antenna. In both cases the antenna is weather sealed at the base.

These antennas are also available for PCS/PCN band applications. See the Cushcraft PCS Antennascatalog for part numbers and specifications.

Contemporary Wall Mount PatchOur 7 dBi molded patch antenna combines good looks with

performance, versatility and low cost. The antenna is housed in aweatherized, molded housing, rugged enough to be mountedoutdoors, but attractive enough to blend into any office or homedecor.

Our styled patches feature easy to install, aesthetically integratedmounting hardware that allows the antenna to be articulated by ±30degrees in one plane. The typically wide beamwidth of the patchantenna, in combination with the articulating feature, makes aimingthe antenna for optimum coverage, easy. These patch antennasare also available for PCS/PCN applications. See the CushcraftPCS Antennas catalog for part numbers and specifications.

Cushcraft Circularly Polarized Patch AntennasThis antenna is designed for applications where circular polarization at the base

station offers a benefit to overall system performance. For example, in a systemwhere portable units are in use, many times the polarity of the portable unit can notbe guaranteed because the portable user does not always orient the unit the sameway each time it is in use.

Cushcraft Dual Feed Patch AntennasThis antenna is designed with 2 feed systems

for polarization diversity. The antenna is an excellentchoice in applications where multipath is a criticalconcern, such as metal buildings, warehouses withmetal racking and railroad yards. A receiver with 2 ports and aswitch can choose polarizations should signal strength levels betoo low.

Characteristics To Consider When Choosing An AntennaIt is very important to know the following when selecting an

antenna; the frequency of operation, the pattern required, theenvironment the antenna will be used in, and if possible, the gainrequired. There are other less important specifications that willbe a minor part of the decision. Full information on the antennafor use below 800 MHz can be found elsewhere in the catalog.
