In PhokyarElephant Camp in Yedashe Township, BagoRegion, tourists can study natural teak forestsand elephants.

It is fair to say that Myanmar has thepotential for greater development of tourismindustry thanks to its many tourist resorts ofnatural ecology.

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Monday, 11 October, 2010 7

NAY PYI TAW, 10 Oct—Chairman of National Democratic Force Dr Than Nyein presented party’s policy, stance and work programmes on radio and TV on10 October.

The translation of his presentation is as follows:-

Esteemed people,

Let me give a brief account of the emergence

of our party.

The majority of those who have founded the

National Democratic Force are representatives-

elect of the National League for Democracy in

the 1990 elections. At that time, we stood for

election with a vow to transform the nation into

democracy in compliance with the aspiration of

the people. From that time on, we have owed a

debt of satisfying the strong desire of the people.

So, we formed National Democratic Force,

whose emblem is a bamboo hat. We will

continue serving public interest in cooperation

with new members from all walks of life.

Now, our country is in transitional period to

democracy. We assume that forthcoming election

is the first step of democratization the people

aspire for. In addition, we hope election is a

good opportunity for us to make public welfare.

Our party will stand for election with the emblem

of a bamboo hat.

Esteemed people,

We will try our best for human rights and

democracy and to cope with economic crisis and

social sufferings faced by the people.

In this case, we will prioritize individual

freedom, but we will never ignore the majority

of the people who are with poor living conditions

due to great gap of wealth. The government is

responsible for doing everything possible for

their betterment. That is the foundation of Social

Liberalism our party will exercise.

Here, I would say that we stay in touch with

the people, so we understand well how hard the

people have to try to deal with their adversities.

We have some short- and long-term plans to be

carried out from forthcoming hluttaws onwards.

In this regard, we do not give any impossible

promises that we will solve all the problems

overnight.

Esteemed people,

After elections, laws will be enacted by

people’s representatives, not by a body alone.

Our party representatives will become MPs if our

party wins the favour of the people. At least, we

will have the right to express our voice in the

legislative body. Then, we will be able to talk on

behalf of the people. And we can take part in

enacting, amending and revoking laws in public

interest.

I would like to present some of our work

programmes we will carry out if we come to

political power. Regarding economic policy, we

will effectively exercise the market economy.

Necessary laws shall be promulgated for every

citizen to have equal access to business so as to

wipe out economic monopolization of a handful

of people. We shall review and amend laws and

regulat ions on trade, money and foreign

investment. Capital made from natural resources

shall be used especially for creating jobs. Only

then, will it be possible to scale up economic

growth and catch up with neighbouring ASEAN

nations.

Esteemed people,

For farmers, we will try our best for them to

enjoy rights of land ownership and freely growing

crops and transporting and trading agricultural

produce. Moreover, we will provide adequate

agricultural subsidies, and establish an insurance

system for agricultural produce and encourage

advanced agricultural methods, with the aim of

enabling our country to regain the position of a

world leading rice exporting country.

For workers, we will try to promulgate

necessary laws for work hours, overtime wages,

minimum salary rate, salary rates and pension

rates enough for living costs, and monetary

service based on pension rates for life security of

retired workers.

Regarding the social sector, education is the

key to prosperous future and long-term

development of a country. So, we will try to

launch a system under which the youth have

access to free middle school education. We will

speed up development of international level

human resources because today technology is

advancing rapidly.

Regarding the health sector, health care shall

also cover rural areas. We will do everything to

improve skills and morality of health staff. Our

party will not accept any situation in which a

citizen is under death threat due to poverty.

We will encourage the private sector to be on

a par with the government sector in terms of

transportation and communication.

Like nongovern-

mental organizations,

the government shall

take responsibilities for

social security of the

aged, pregnant women,

orphans, physical ly

handicapped people,

and victims to natural

disasters . We wil l see to our party’s

announcement on democracy general elections

which has been approved by the Union Election

Commission “to ensure all national races have

equal rights in addressing issues on affairs of

national races”.

One of our party’s important work

programmes is to achieve national reconciliation.

To build consolidated national unity, we have to

work together for national reconciliation.

Our party strongly believes that only with

national reconciliation, will we achieve success

in internal peace, democratization, human rights

and national development.

Esteemed people,

They are some of our party’s main work

programmes. Adhering to such policies and work

programmes, candidates representing our party

will stand for election with the emblem of a

bamboo hat in various constituencies.

We will never stick to over-confident attitude

in working for human rights and democracy.

Whoever works, what is the most important is

to work with goodwill. It is, therefore, up to the

people to vote for the parties and candidates they

can rely on. Only then will it be possible for the

country to see positive changes.

Now, I have presented our party’s

representatives to the people. So, I kindly request

the people to give advice and make suggestions

as necessary.

Esteemed people,

In conclusion, I would say our party

members:-

- will never leave the people alone,

- will never give up democracy campaign,

- will cling on to the stance that elections

are part of democracy. So, I would say

the people can place reliance and trust in

our party’s representatives.

May the constituents and the people enjoy

physical and mental wellbeing!

Thank you all!

France’s GDF Suez signsChina LNG supply dealSHANGHAI, 10 Oct— French energy giant GDF

Suez on Saturday signed a deal to sell 2.6 milliontonnes of liquefied natural gas to China between 2013and 2016 as the energy-hungry nation steps up gasimports.

The agreement was signed with China’s overseasenergy firm China National Offshore Oil Corporation(CNOOC) in the presence of GDF Suez’s chairman,Gerard Mestrallet. No sale price was published. Thecontract “represents a major step for our presence inChina’s energy sector,” said Mestrallet.

It comes after GDF Suez made its first LNGdelivery to Shanghai in August.

Natural gas still represents a small proportionaround five percent of total energy consumption inChina, but demand for the relatively clean fuel isrising rapidly and Beijing is increasingly resorting toLNG imports while building up gas infrastructure.

America moves on fromspill; coast feels

abandonedBIRMINGHAM,10 Oct—About 800

miles from the Gulf of Mexico, DaveEdmonds is struggling to remind peopleabout the BP oil spill.

There aren’t many magazine coverswith photos of oil-drenched birds nowthat BP has capped its massive gusher atthe bottom of the sea. People aren’tlooking online for information about thehistoric spill like they were a few weeksago.

So Edmonds, who lives on theDelaware coast, has started a nonprofitorganization to keep the disaster onpeople’s minds with a website and socialnetworking campaign. “Awareness hasdropped. People don’t really care aboutthe people who were affected. They don’tcare about the fish life,” said Edmonds, founder of Taking Back the Gulf. ForGulf residents fighting for economicsurvival, a nation’s short attention spanis deeply unsettling, especially with oilstill washing ashore. Yet it’s unclearwhether Americans are turning theirattention elsewhere, or whether it’s justthe media that have.

Thomas lifts No. 23 FSU past No. 13Miami, 45-17

MIAMI, 10 Oct—Jimbo Fisher got his first celebratory water-coolershower, shocked at how chilling it really was. On the other side of the field,Randy Shannon was boiling mad.Sums up a night Florida State wants tosavor, and Miami surely wants to forget.Jermaine Thomas scored a career-high three touchdowns, all in the first 21 minutes, and Chris Thompson sealedthe outcome with the longest run Miami has allowed in its illustrious historya 90-yard scoring jaunt as the 23rd-ranked Seminoles enjoyed a surprisinglyeasy 45-17 win over the 13th-ranked Hurricanes on Saturday night.

“Winning’s nice,” Fisher said, “but dadgum it, that’s cold.”The dadgumwas Bobby Bowden-esque.Even the venerable Bowden didn’t enjoy too manynights like this against Miami. It was the second-most points Florida Statescored in the series, and just the fifth time in 55 games that a team enjoyed asbig a win. Christian Ponder threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns forFlorida State (5-1, 3-0), which hasn’t gotten off to a start this good inconference play since 2005.“I knew there were going to be ups and downs thisgame,” Ponder said on the field afterward.Indeed there were ups for FloridaState, downs for Miami.“I’m not going to sugarcoat it,” Shannon said. “Wejust got our butts kicked tonight. It’s my fault as a coach at the University ofMiami. I don’t blame the kids.—Internet
