Programme

We think we’ve got a reallycracking selection of things for youto enjoy in this winter programmeand we hope you think so too. We’re so lucky living where we doin Kirklees - the hardest thing indeveloping the programme isn’tfinding things to do, it’s decidingwhat to leave out.

03Where life gets more interesting for the over 55’s

Hopefully we’ve got the balance of something forevery pocket, and every taste and a good spread ofevents across the region. Suggestions are alwayswelcome – we’ve included one or two membersideas this time, including The National TheatreLive broadcast of War Horse at HuddersfieldOdeon.

We’re especially excited about Club 55 ‘GoodVibrations’ requested by members who used tolove going to nightclubs and don’t see why theyshould stop now just because all the clubs aregeared towards youngsters. The first of its kind inHuddersfield and open to members’ and non-members aged over 55, this is sure to be a winner!

We know lots of you want to get in touch witheach other to do things outside Culture Club (togo for walks, meals, and outings) and we’relooking into ways of linking you all up – perhapsthrough an online forum – watch this space!

For those who like something a bit unusual we’rekicking off with a lovely optimistic performancecalled Bring the Happy combining live band, performance and art. Sticking with the happytheme, we’re going to let our hair down in thenew year with Laughter in Mind who will help ushave a really good guffaw at Coffee and...laughter workshop. And we’ll be building upsome festive cheer at our Christmas lunch.

Other seasonal celebrations include HuddersfieldFestival of Light complete with a hot meal, andThe Nutcracker with the Moscow City Ballet.

We’re really excited about our visual arts events thistime, with a trip to see truly incredible work byJoana Vasconcelos at Manchester Art Galleryand an adventure exploring Wakefield Art Walkas artists open their doors and create art inunusual places.

We’ve picked two really special lunchtime concertsfor you; Rachel Mosley (soprano) and LisaOsborne (oboe) offer us something different withsongs and arias and The Art of the Improviserwith Gordon Stewart and piano virtuoso GeorgeKing. This really is a lovely way to spend awinter lunchtime.

We’re not going to hide inside all winter though -we’re hoping for a bright clear wintery day forCoffee and... History of Greenhead Park so thatwe can get out and walk round the park. If it’sreally miserable we’ll still enjoy tea/coffee and cakein the cafe and an illustrated talk.

March

We know you like a chance to find out more about the events in theprogramme, so here's another Coffee and… programme preview eventfor those of you who fancy a get together and want to start planning yourwinter season together. For three weeks, Invisible Flock will occupy a disused shop in Barnsley andtransform it into a giant 3D map of the city. At the end of this period, thememories collected will be taken and transformed into Bring the HappyLive - a spectacular performance attempting an extravagant portrait ofhappiness, as the thousands of memories collected are retold in all of theirbeautiful, sometimes tragic, sometimes ridiculous - and occasionallymundane - glory. The icing on thecake is an opportunity to see and learn about some Suffrage items fromthe Tolson collection that are not normally on display to the public.“Ursula is a brave and audacious performer who, through her agile andheart-felt songs and stories, manages to combine the stark realities of lifewith the bitter-sweet mixture of wonder and yearning that are thelife-blood of the folksong and the fairy-story” (Society for Storytelling)

Volunteering with Culture ClubWe’re always looking for volunteers to give us a hand at events and provide

an extra pair of hands at busy times. We sometimes need a volunteer to

accompany a club member to an event, for example a trip to a theatre or

gallery to offer companionship and support. Some members need support

with transport or access and others just need a familiar face. We occasionally

need help with mail outs and distribution of publicity – give us a call for more

information. 01484 663518

Have adultsforgotten howto laugh?

Why is it that research shows that young children laugh on average 300 times a

day whereas adults laugh only 4? Do we become less playful as we age?

Here’s what Christine Renshaw from Laughter in Mind thinks...

“We have all heard the saying ‘Laughter is the BestMedicine’ and there is extensive research that has provedthe wide ranging benefits that laughter has on ouroverall physical and emotion wellbeing”.

Are you able to laugh many times a day unconditionally? If not then maybe you

are stopping yourself from enjoying the lighter side of life?

There is a huge difference between conditional and unconditional laughter.

Babies and children laugh naturally and unconditionally for no reason, but as

adults we tend usually to laugh if the conditions are right, in other words we

laugh if there is laughter trigger (e.g. jokes/comedy) and if we don’t feel

inhibited by where we are or who is looking.

With unconditional laughter we laugh because we decide to laugh free from

inhibitions or comedy triggers. What would the world be like if laughter

became, once again, our natural state?

What if you decided that every day you are going to have a few extra laughs?

Maybe even some real happy long ones, so deep and hearty that someone else

starts laughing too!

Want to laugh more? – come to the workshop. See page 7 for more details.

Clubs have been turning away punters for looking too young for decades –but have you ever felt unable to enjoy a night on the tiles because you feltawkward about being too old? Well now you can dust off your dancing shoesand go to a night aimed specifically at over 55s. Culture Club have hadenough of the stereotypical idea that young people are the only people wholike nightclubs and we’re taking a stand.

We have taken inspiration from Manchester resident Joyce Gill who instigateda series of club nights for over 50s called ‘My Generation’. We went along acouple of times, had a great time, and were disappointed to learn that therewon’t be any more of these nights in Manchester for a while.

Not to be defeated, some of our members set about finding a venue inHuddersfield to put on our very own night – and they came up trumps withThe Cotton Factory. It’s a really friendly place right in the centre ofHuddersfield and there’s a private entrance from the street that leads straightup to our room where we’ll be waiting to greet you.

Once inside we’ll have our own bar, plenty of seating and a nice big dance-floor for you to show off your moves whilst listening to hits from the 60s and70s. We’ve got live music from Huddersfield band, The Pathfinders, who playhits including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Monkees, Roy Orbison,The Hollies, Dave Clark Five, The Kinks and more...

At the end of the night it’ll be easy for you to get safely into taxis and cars inthis busy well lit area of town and where possible we’ll link you up with othersto travel home together. So, there’s no excuses for missing this – it will reallyput a spring in your step if you relive your youth in style at Club 55 –Good Vibrations (page 8).

Known to some of you as Alice Dingle from ITV’s Emmerdale,Ursula Holden Gill has won more acting and storytelling awardsthan we can mention here. And that’s without mentioning hertalents as a singer and clog dancer. We were also intrigued tolearn that her mother worked as an Illusionist’s Assistant duringthe late 1950s and 60s and was the inspiration for her song‘Magic Show’. Ursula has very kindly let us reprint the lyrics to thesong here – and if we’re lucky she might even perform this songfor us in March at our storytelling event at the Tolson Museum(see page 10).

Magic Show

“Don't judge books by their covers”. My mother used to say:

“All isn't what it seems to be it just appears that way.

Look through the mask, under the glass and open every door.

If you don't find the answers there girl, roll the dice some more”.

For life is like a magic show.

A mystery, the more you see the less you seem to know.

Things vanish, people reappear - who's fake and what is true?

Come inside to enjoy the ride...the magic lies in you.

“Play every hand like it's your last, beware the Jack o' Hearts...

Conjure wee flowers endlessly, be colourful, and smart.

Don't let them put you in a box and saw you down the middle,

Stay whole my love and remember there's wisdom in the riddle”.

For life is like a magic show.

A mystery, the more you see the less you seem to know.

Things vanish, people reappear - who's fake and what is true?

Come inside to enjoy the ride...the magic lies in you.
