brom the desk of FRANK 6 NAN HABERSBERGER, ptesidents NNJSVA We address ourselves to a situation which is quite serious,
yet the solution of which is very simple and relatively pain-less. Our official publication, GRAND SQUARE, is currently
operating in the red. We cannot long siphon funds from our cash reserve as there would then he inadequate funds remaining to carry out our out-reach programs, Special Dances and the many services to our Clubs and Dancers.
Our Editors, Peg & Doc Tirrell, have taken all possible steps to adjust for the increased cost of paper, printing and binding. Advertising fees are increased and notices and articles are reduced in size so that less pages are required. This is done skillfully and the newsworthiness and intent are maintained.
With all possible efforts being made by our Editors to trim our costs, it is now our turn to do our share. Surprisingly, we are not asking for a greater donation from individual dancers during the upcoming Booster Drive. What we ask is that every dancer in every Club in Northern New Jersey that reads and benefits from GRAND SQUARE donates to help defray these increased costs and that we wear the Booster Tag for a month with pride.
GRAND SQUARE as a newsworthy publication has earned high marks nation-wide as an effective communications link between Clubs, Dancers and our Dancers' Association. It is the life blood of our activities and it is vital that we do our share to keep it solvent. As had occurred with so many other ventures and activities, inflation has finally caught up with this important area of our activity. Let us remember all those years of efficient planning and management by Peg & Doc that have kept GRAND SQUARE in the "black". Let us show our thanks and appreciation by making our up-coming Booster Drive 100% effective.

CMCLE Tena4b, N f(S) 4th Ftiday Mackay School, Je66eA4on Avenue As we bid farewell to another holiday season, we pray you and yours had
a very Merry Christmas and sincerely wish one and all a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Year filled to overflowing with many "rounds and squares".
Whoever said lightning never strikes the same place twice! For the second time our caller mixed up our 4th Friday date and never showed -but thanx to Happy Squares callers, Doc & Peg we had a fun filled sing a-long night. And for the ? time our caller has moved away from the area. This time Ron Bessette was suddenly transfered back to Texas - but fear not. Circle Eights will still go on its merry QS way...only with Mike Cleary on squares. Mike was already scheduled to call some of our dances, as well as our spring/fall weekends, so it seems only logical he become our new club caller.
So come on over. We start dancing at 8 with rounds cued between tips by either the Gordons or the Tirrells. Check our flyer for Cresskill or Tenafly location. Reporters-Dave/Dot Pinand 201-796-6473

Our end of year dances were a success with over 20 squares. Jerry Schatzer was calling...and sad to say Jerry will be leaving our area for the smog of LA early in 1980. Seriously tho Jerry, we wish you nothing but the best and hope you'll come back East often! Peg & Doc call our inspiring rounds. Although Peg had laryngitis at the November dance, she looked as beautiful as usual and the round dancing was very enjoyable. See our ad on pis for our winter schedule. If +2 APD is your thing, then we're your club crass over the bridge and mme join us.

With the Holiday Season now but a happy memory, we thank Etta/Don Davison and all their helpers who made our party such a delicious and decorative success.
As the New Year begins, it is time for the Colonial Squares mid-term exam. You have been dancing for five months and Professor Kopman has been patiently teaching ti reteaching calls. Not put your knowledge to the test and cut your way through the following obscure clues to identify ten callg you have danced so fir this season.
I. Magician's phrase as he pulls out a rabbit 2. Fox hunter's rallying call 3. Illegal way to cross the street 4. Invigorate your person 5. Gather into one entity 6. Cause to settle lower 7. Divide and place in jeopardy 8. Wheeled vehicle on a straight course 9. Fashionable 10. Doctor's advice pertaining to aspirin
All completed and correct answer sheets entitle contestants to advance with alert minds and best feet forward into the second half of our ener-getic dancing season. Reporters - Don/Jo Braly 201-647-4110

Our season is now in full swing and going strong. Our students are enthusiastic and doing well. Dick Jones called our Thanksgiving Dance (better than 28 sets) while Nancy Nosker cued the rounds. A good time was had by all.
Our December dance was well attended by visiting Clubs. Jim Marshall workshopped some new.ds well as "forgotten" calls(including "Yellow Rock") while Roy Gotta cued the rounds. The mystery bus ride scheduled for Janu-ary was completely sold out the first week it was announced, probably be-cause we had such a good time at the last one.
By the time this report is being read, our Christmas Dance, which as usual was open to students, will be a thing of the past. Hopefully it will have been a very successful one! We now look forward to a wonderful 1980. (see our ad on page No ).
A Happy, healthy New Year to one and all.

COVERED BRIDGE SQUARES -- Nuttey, N.J. (+ 1 ) 2 g 4 FAAldays Fkanktin Pe4otmed Chu&ch, OiLtoide Ctucent This fall Covered Bridge & Solitaires combined their students for class
instruction under Jules Pozsar. In October we enjoyed participating in the First N.J. Ethnic Festival held at Liberty Island. Here we joined the American S/D groups demo with Manny Amor calling. We danced at the foot of the Statue of Liberty, sampled many ethnic foods and watched other folk dance demos. in November we entertained a group of appreciative ladies at the Memorial Home for Women in West Orange with our demo and home made cookies. Our Christmas Dance in December featured AI Ahearn as Santa, to keep the evening joIiy; and Margie/Wally Cox did their comedy bit as "Sonny and Cher". Visitors and the class attended.
Earlier in December Al Moffitt underwent by=pass heart surgery at St. Luke's Hospital in NYC. As of this writing his prognosis is very good. Certainly Al's attitude is superb. Just before entering the hospital he put in his application for the Tennessee Convention! We wish him the very best. Trusting you all had a Christmas dear to you hearts, we look for- ward to having you join us in 1980 at our new dance hall.

Hope You all had enjoyable Holidays and your New Year will be a Healthy, Happy Square Dancing one, and that the gas situation will improve, so we can dance with our far away friends. We wish to thank Dick Lighthipe for filling in for Dick Maddocks, who became ill on our last dance night, with about an hour until dance time. Thank you, Dick, we enjoyed your calling & appreciate your helping us. BRAG TIME! Cross Trail had the most in attendance at the Mini-Festival and Staten Island second. We Just com-pleted our 4th Century Book, no repeats! They helped us to get out and dance more often. Bring your Century Books in January and dance to Bruce Busch & in FeWuary to Charles Kides, our guest callers. You are always welcome. See our ad on page 34. Our students joined us at our Christmas Dance. Hope to see you soon and often.

CATCH ALL EIGHTS - NORTH - Due to poor acoustics attendance dropped considerably this fall. But now with the move to MONDAY nights AND a new location - Greenbush Presbyterian Church 85 Western Highway, Blauvelt,NY the picture should improve during the final 3 months. Easy to reach (the Exxon map has Western Highway clearly marked - go North on Western Hwy - church is approximately 11/2 miles above Orangeburg/Western Hwy intersection. Church is on left; hall in back-PLEASE do not park in front of Post Office) If confused- call chairmen - Bertha/George Yezarsky 914-359-9528 or Bill/ Marie Morrison 914-359-1428 for directions.
CATCH ALL EIGHTS - EAST - Attendance is holding firm at 4 sets, gaining toward 41/2. They meet Monday evenings at the VFW in Iselin,NJ. Chairmen are Ann/Joe Kohutis 201-634-8086 & Ruth/Ted Zurich 201-548-6481.
both groups are happy groups, progressing nicely and gaining confidence in their square dancing ability. Any dancer who would welcome a refresher is welcode to attend. All dancers who complete this workshop owe much to the dedicated callers who contribute their time and talent to this activ-ity for a very minimal fee...and to the very dedicated chairmen.

Since we last reported we have had the pleasure of the expert calling of Bill Chamberlain at two of our dances and Ron Bessette in November with the net result of fun filled dances that were unusually well attended. The rounds have been ably cued by Max/Nancy Nosker; Ron/Ree Rumble; Doc/ Peg Tirrell and Pat/Tom Cribbin. "Very Smooth" best describes the quality of our round dancing.
Be on the lookout for our flyer announcing the dates, callers & cuers for the balance of our scheduled dances soon to appear. Join us for fun dancing, delicious refreshments and snacks during the dance and sit down coffee and cake afterwards. reporters-Lee/Chet Bernstein 201-925-5378
GARVEN STATE SQUARE VANCE CAMPEPS Our last campout for the year was herb in October, with pouring rain,
but with our usual great time. Joe Landi called the squares and the Pennies, the rounds. After the Sat-urday night dance, a wine and cheese party warmed everyone's hearts and vocal chords. Two lovely young ladies from Sweden entertained us by singing and play-ing the guitar. They were staying with Dennis/Betty Ford as exchange students.
Right now we are getting ready for our annual din- ner dance with Bob Mitchell (shown purchasing his IL:"‘ GRAND SQUARE Booster tag at last year's dance from our delegates) and the Tirrells doing the honors. Incidentally, those nice pictures of campers in GRAND SQUARE are put there by Peg Tirrell. She is our "photographer" at the August campout and does a great job. (Ed.-Thank you...but we'll gladly accept anyone's clear, black/white photos for publication).
Speaking for the Officers, all of our jobs were made easy throughout the season by your willingness to pitch in and lend a helping hand.

A letter of thanks was received from the NJ Governor's Office for our
participation at the First Festival. We have been invited back for the second Festival which we expect will be scheduled somewhere around the first week of October, 1980. A tentative plan is to color our next pre-sentation with Round Dancing and Jim Howatt has been invited to provide a demo of Clogging. We will probably be content with 4 sets for each day. A committee will be formed & announcements made well in advance of this event. What better way to advertise "the American Folk Dance"!
HANOVER SQUARES -- Whippany, N.J. (+2) 2 6 4 F4iday4 SaZem Drive Schoo'
Now that the winter months are here, most people would like to sit by -a warm fire, but there's no better way to warm up than at a good Square Dance. At Hanover Squares we have some great callers lined up, see our ad on page 40. Dick Maddocks' expert teaching became known to us all as we met with class members at their Holiday Party, ending the first half of their lessons. Class members as well as club members were treated to a black lite demo coordinated by Max/Louise Brueche (who are also known as Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus). Once again our spirit of caring and sharing with a local family was observed this holiday season.
Our annual New Year's Eve Dance, with Bruce Busch calling, was a fun time for all. And our raid to West Milford Flutterwheels was successful with 4+ squares. Vic/Rose Scango are planning a Class Level Dance with a special treat for newcomers a S/D Fashion Show!!! The dance will be in February at Salem Drive School & flyers will be available. See you on the

aid clubs asking for signatures & addresses. In order to have a coordinated effort on the part of all organizations
serving S/D in all of NJ, letters were sent to the CCNJ, NNJRDLC, The Federation of Delaware Valley S & R/Ders, and the newly formed Central NJ SDA advising them of our efforts and asking for their cooperation in at-taining this common goal.
The National Folk Dance Committee is trying to light a fire under the Congressional Committee(House Post Office & Civil Service) where HJR 69 is "under study", to secure the necessary Congressional endorsements, to move the bill out to the floor for action. The Koveds received a let-ter from Matthew Rinaldo (Rep. 12th district,NJ) informing them that Mr. Rinaldo is a co-sponsor of this measure. Have YOU written your Congress-man asking for his (or her) support of HJR 69?
Here is your opportunity to help get these two bills enacted into law. Sign the petitions; write your local & national congressman and take ever] opportunity possible to present square dancing as our American Folk Dance. At the January Delegates Meeting, a brief history of S/D in NJ was dis-tributed along with patitions.

Christmas Club Dance was "The" event of our whole dance season. How could we miss with Glenn Cooke calling & Shirley/Frank Bellotti on rounds? The friendship and good food, good fun is not easily matched anywhere. Watch for our flyer so as not to miss the good times that are coming.
Our new class under Marty Clifford's instruction is doing just fine. There was a special Christmas party for our up and coming dancers, another memorable occasion. Enid Powell, Bea Victor ,Joseph DiMolfetta were on our sick list. May they all be back in a square by now. United Squares of Staten Island will hold their Sixth annual Square Dancer's Round Up in May (see ad on page23). It has been a sellout every year. Register ear-ly 'cause this one promises to be better than ever. Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year. May you dance right through it.

Helping us celebrate this event were over 2 sets from Staten Square Sets on a mystery bus ride. Our beginners class joined us for our Holiday Dance, making it a gala occasion. Did you turn on the TV set early enough to watch the S/D float roll-ing down Colorado Blvd New Years Day? Each float participant re-ceives at least forty seconds of air time on each TV station. The Pasadena Police Department estima-ted 1.4 million persons lined the 51/2 mile parade route. Post Parade viewing in Victory Park was also a
----- big attraction with square dancing on the float for the following two days.
The theme, American Folk Music, was depicted by two white violins, one lower and one above, to provide a patio type dance floor for the dancers. (incidentally they came from California, Minnesota, Maryland & New York) The violin was highlighted by large red roses and hanging floral arrange-ments of bridal pink roses. The float was 16 feet high, 18 feet wide and 50 feet long. Yak Stack donated the speakers used.
Thanks to the efforts of many, last year's float (1979) was paid for by early December. Now we're working on 1980's: Our thanks to the many dancers who've bought a yellow rose.

Happy New Year to one and all The first half of our dancing season has been a success. We would like to THANK the many visiting Dancers who helped make our dances fun. The Winter Weather has not hindered the tra-vel to our club to date-thanks to the excellent Sussex County Road Depart-ment. We have been raided by some of the area clubs & we have raided in return. Our Special Dance in November called by Jim Adams was thoroughly enjoyed. We are sure our April special featuring Bob Mitchell wi 11 also be fun. Our Christmas Dance was a Merry One attended by our many class members & students from other local clubs. The gifts this year were for children and elderly residents of the local nursing homes.
Unfortunately our Feb. second dance has to be cancelled due to the School closing. Our first March dance will be a Treasurers dance & all
club Treasurers are welcome at No Charge. So Treasurers bring your friend
and enjoy. If this dance is called due to bad weather, it wi 11 be held on the third Wednesday in March. Come One and All and enjoy our Fun Dances.

ILL "I concur wholeheartedly with the movement to do al possible
Trull to make S/Ding fun for everyone. In line with this, I'd like to suggest that after a square breakdown, it is good etiquette to resume dancing after a left allemande call and do the Grand Right and Left instead instead of glumly waiting for the fol-
lowing call. Usually it is the old, experienced dancers who would rather stand than dance. This is wrong for a few reasons. Understanding and good humor are especially useful after a breakdown and there is nothing better than the Grand Right and Left to jovially smile and greet each dan-cer as we go around the square. This is most appreciated by the new dan-cers who probably caused the breakdown.
What is so bad about doing another Grand Right and Left? Aren't we out to dance, exercise and have fun? The Grand Right and Left is the happiest fun call in S/Ding. Let's all get with it." Mato..i.ce Beittiivtut

M T SQUARES -- Woodb4idge, N.J. (+2) 1 6 3 Saturdays School 19, Matyknott load, Menlo Parth TeAhace Another year has been engulfed by time, the perrennial equilizer. It's
been fun & enjoyable square dancing and extending friendship, our most tangible asset. Here we are beginning a new year & continuing our S/D season. May the events that unfold be as meaningful and pleasant as those in the past. Last season our S/D had the usual trademark of excitement & enjoyment - natural ly with the likes of Bruce Busch calling the tips and the Dockry's. Peg 8 Joe, on the rounds providing the source. According to Professor Bob, our class has dimished somewhat. However, those who have perservered are progressing with great expectations.
The Holiday Season was earmarked by our Yuletide Dance with the exchang ing of gifts. Our year ending saga, "New Years Eve Dance", was a smashing success. Give credit to the splendid efforts of Alex/Irene. Thanks to Rob Bissey for his contribution to our entertainment. Mystery Bus Ride was rescheduled from November to late January. Remember our S/D schedule-1st & 3rd Saturdays of every month. To all our friends, the M T's extend our warmest greeting for the New Year.

A bus load of "Bazonganized" Merri-Eights! Our mystery bus ride to the Grand Prowlers in Parsippany was - and will be - one of the highlights of this year!
Thanks to Mel & Dorie Gershman, our Mystery Bus Ride Chairpersons, those of us who had not had the pleasure of dancing at Grand Prowlers were introduced to a great club. The hospitality, refreshments and caller Frannie Heintz were all
absolutely superb. . . not to mention Walt and Grace Pennie, Presidents and
Round Dance cuers! Our sincere thanks to the Grand Prowlers for a wonderful evening. ENERGY CONSERVATION by our School District has not affected the Merri-
Eights'full dance schedule - we've simply moved our time up by half an hour to allow the schools to close earlier - our 10:30 twitting time is great for travellers!
With the Holidays behind us, and many happy memories to go with them, our thoughts turn to Spring and all the activities that go with it - our Valentine's Special,
St. Patrick's Day special, March barn dance, PAUL ANDREWS, etc., etc.! Hope
you all have a chance to visit - Glenn Cooke, Shirley Belotti and all the Merri-Eights extend to you a personal invitation!

Since this is the season for Nominating Committees, we would like to take a moment to remind you that all of the Square & Round Dance activities doesn't just happen. Your dancing
friends have been, and are, busy at work making all this come into being. But it is NOT a closed corporation. We strongly suggest you get into
the swing - volunteer to help. There are many opportunities to help both large and small - behind the scenes and as leaders....where you may contribute to the overall dance activity. If you are a little (or a lot) apprehensive, re-member the NNJSDA will sponsor a leadership seminar (LUST) on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14 at Montville,NJ. This is geared to help the new officer and the "old timer". It is a for-um to discuss problems & gain insight into "what makes our activity tick". Pictured are dancers sharing with others.
The NNJSDA Nominating Committee is composed of Betty/Frank Olier, Frank/Lorraine Mooney & Jim/Fay Bates, Chr. If you have a name to suggest or wish to volunteer, please contact them. The slate will be announced the end of March.

Happy New Decade! As the world entered this new decade, so too the Ocean Waves. We celebrated our Tenth Anniversary at our December Dance. The uproarious, vivacious, "Ding-a-1ings" presented a unique fashion revue & introduced, without doubt, the "Bride of the Century". Our class was introduced to the fun & frolic of being an Ocean Wave. We are looking forward to their graduation when they can be full participants in all our club activities. We ended the old year with a new face at the Shack -Betsy Gotta & anticipate this pleasure many more times in this new decade.
Our "old reliable" Mike Cleary, our club caller, called the first dance
of 1980. But before this year is finished he has to learn a new song_ . "Lullaby": Congratulations Barbara & Mike. This new decade we have started with some new, to 0/W, callers Ralph Trout & Steve Koprron. Our old friend the Super Chef, Glenn Cooke, (see our ad page 1Z) will be with us also. May the Lord love and guide all of you in this new decade. Happy dancing!!! PTL reporters - Joe/Teresa LaPointe 212-356-0381

October; Jim Marshall 8 Ralph Stapenell in November; Jim Cargill S. Ed Joy-ner (PlAss.) in December. Later in December was our Christmas party at which all the students from our class danced a couple of basic tips.
We began the New Year with our own Marty Clifford calling at Hannover Night. We look forward to our Valentine Dance in February with up-and-coming caller Frank Riviccio. If you haven't seen Leo/Lois Bichler at dances, it's because they are in Florida. Leo had fully recovered from his 'recent bout with surgery. Bob/Doris Delaney have joined Dancing Grandparents. Two sets of our club provided an afternoon's entertainment in December at the Golden Gate Health Care Center (home for the elderly) on SI. Bill Anderson did a professional job of calling squares, and Shir-ley Bellotti cued a few round dances. Other rounds were danced without cues, making a big impression on the audience. And Bill Anderson called an "audience participation" tip, when several of the Center residents joined us in the fun, reporters - Jim/Alice Wilson 212-727-9583

The Christmas season is usually a quiet one for us S/Ders, but as anoth-
er holiday season passed us by, we had an opportunity to spread joy among those who most need it by performing a S/D demonstration at the Holmdel Convalescent Center in December. Smokey Warren, the original act for the afternoon, may have been a hard act to follow, but it made no difference to those patients who were there that afternoon. My sincere thanks to those club members who participated.

The Hudson Valley Scottish Country Dance Society treated us to an exhi-bition of the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland. Wanda/Andrew Mac-Leod joined the group in a stately strathspey which they executed magnifi-cently. Connie Powell gave an exhibition of the Highland Fling which was the very essence of grace and agility.
Anne/Colin Killion became proud grandparents. Little Jennifer weighed in at 6 lbs. 3 ozs. and "Gramps" just happened to have some pictures with him. Adele/Dave Weiss chaired our raid on the Tenakill Twirlers where were most graciously welcomed. Our telephone relay system has been set up & we are now ready to notify our members should there be a cancellation due to some unforeseen emergency.
We extend our best wished to all for a peaceful, healthy, happy new
year. reporters - Clem/Vi haves 914-358-2235
SOLITAIRES We4t Onange, N.J. (QS) 1 8 3uSundays (2-4:30 pm) Community House, 242 Main Stneet The Land of Sunshine (Florida) has lured a number of our members away
in the last couple of months. We will miss them, but wish them all the best in their new homes. We know their S/D will help them make new friends where ever they go. Our class has merged with Covered Bridge's class. Betsy Gotta & Jules Pozsar are alternating weeks as teachers/callers. The result is the students are seeing and hearing 2 voices & styles of calling & teaching. While one might guess that the situation would cause confusion, progress has been very fast. Certainly they are seeing that variety in cal-lers makes Square Dancing all that more fun.
To all Square Dancers everywhere, We wish a Happy Year. reporter - Mike Bianchi 201-887-5705

A .first""for Somerset Hills was a raid by the Cloud "9ers" R/D club. It was a very pleasant surprise. A super bid wel-come back to Carl Hanks as he returned from his square dancing cruise. Of course it waS to a warm place! Eighty lucky couples are anxiously await- ing the New Years Dance. They are lucky in that they purchased their tickets before all were sold out. Everyone is looking forward to the calling of Dick Jones at the New Years Eve Party where we only stop dancing to watch the Times Square ball fall and eat the delicious food.

Although the New Year is almost a month old, we want to take this op-portunity to wish you & yours a healthy 1980, filled with all that makes you happy in every way. And to help make some of your S/D hours happy, why not come up to the hills of Sussex County to dance with John Kalten-thaler or Guests, calling +1 - Century Club-bers take note, we can help you fiii your book! We have the capable to of Jess/Jean Elrod on th rounds & they really have 'the knack' to make everyone smile as they alid them through some pretty smooth footwork. Many of our members have been helping to publicize S/D by signing petitions requesting passage of a Bil in the NJ Legislature proclaiming it to be the American Folk Dance, trave ling to Festivals such as Mini #6, the ethnic participation at the Statue of Liberty, & a benefit dance for a fellow dancer from the Flutterwheels who was seriously hurt this past summer. Some members are travelling to
other clubs in our NNJSDA to earn their Patron Badge, while others have gone on S/D weekends & vacations, always well groomed, proud & happy to tell novices about our favorite past-time, & most anxious to meet new friends who share this common denominator. How about each of us making a 1980 resolution to promote this great activity as best as we can: Serve on a committee for your club & willingly do a Job when asked to help; Fill in a square and make a new friend; Sit on the sidelines if neces-sary but 'talk it up' & in general, Resolve to remember "Friendship (and Cooperation) is S/D's greatest Reward." Another SSS event, our annual September barn dance was a howling success thanks to chairpersons Bob/Evelyn McCullem and their hardworking committee. All our non-s/d friends had a ball. Because of them the dance was sold
out! Great! A mystery dance in October to Country Promenaders was a lot
of fun. But let us tell you of three nights of dancing in a row, last No-
vember, to the calling of Manny Amor. Over the bridge, then on the Jersey
highways to Lakewood to visit Star Thru Squares. Dancing back home on
Saturday and then Sunday, led by our president Dave/Lil Beauchaine, for
the third time, over the bridge, on a mystery raid to Kings Squares. We
tell you there wis a lot of hoopla especially when Manny called "Shake! Shaker" There certainly was a lot of hoppinc un & down and stomping of feet. Oh-h-h our aching feet! Anyway it sure was fun culminating in re-
ceiving our heart badge with a "3" on it for dancing, to mannv three niehts in a row. Also, congratulations to all who received their mystery badges.
In December Bud & Jinny Allison of the Ramapo Squares received the
coveted Lucarini Award for their unselfish contributions to Square Dancing. It's people like Bud & Jinny who make seuare dancing what it is. Hooray and congratulations!
The new Big Top committee, chaired by Tony/nloria buffa are Arnieg;ert Johnsen, Matt/Beverly Ldaine; Lenny/Laura Geata; flene/nrire Lucarini and
Vince/Mary Vesta. Lots of luck and happy planning on your yearly event.
By the way, at every SSS dance they have their "Big Top" tent pitched so you can make your reservations.
Well another S/D season is well upon us. Se-o-n all you 555 members we haven't seen, come on back and support your club. We need you.

How nice to shake the dust of the '70s from our heels and start the new decade as part of a real upbeat activity. Square dancing, of course.
Happily our very favorite activity grew during the last decade, not only in the USA, but around the world. So much so that with all the comings &
goings (square dancers being natural-born gypsies), many people made new
friends. Our own Art Taylor wouldn't dream of going anywhere without S/D
clothes just in case. And speaking of clothes, have you ever really paid attention to how
very nice the dancers look? We take the bright, colorful clothes for
granted. But take a step back and observe the scene. Once a writer (non-
dancer) described the dancers as looking like Dresden dolls. That we are
not - but rather healthy individuals who enjoy covering five miles or so
at a dance. We at Swingin' Stars wish one and all miles of happy dancing in 1980!

We hope you had a happy holiday season and are looking forward to a long winter of contented dancing. Tenakill's festive time started with very gay November dance with a baker's dozen of Vice Presidents turning at THEIR dance. A raid by our friends from the North - See Saw Squares, made the evening complete. December brought a joyous Christmas Dance any ended with our usual New Years Eve Party with the Tirrells as gracious hosts. We were all glad to see some people who have been sick back dan-cing; namely John Zack, Don LeFebvre and Joe Maguire. We hope Bii I Sues! mann's last trip to the hospital for surgery (his 4th) will end this tir( some habit of his. As of this writing he is home and doing well under tt care of nurse, Catherine.

Y Squares is warming up to a HOT winter, regardless of temperature outside or inside. We've had great times this fall with Bill Cunningham, Mike Foley and, most recently, Dick Jones. Our Halloween dance was a huge success. Over half those attending were in costume, including Mike/Betsy Foley and our cuer Shirley/Frank Bellotti. Many thanks to Shirley & Frank for keeping us abreast of all the new rounds and still stressing the good old classics.
We found out again what great fun it is to "Raid" when we descended upon Hix & Chix with two and a half sets one Thursday night. It was sure a lively dance & we received a great welcome. Many thanks to our newly-wed raid chairmen Doris/Tony Mastroly for arranging a terrific evening.
Dick Jones will be calling our regular dances for a couple months now. We're also happy to welcome Jean Kellogg as our RID cuer for the second half of the dancing year. We hope everyone will consider attending our "Special" in March with Norm lglehart, the Yodeling caller. Please see our ad on page 37 for details. Remember our 1979-1980 square dancing theme "WE dance for fun and friendship". When those cold winter nights come along ,don't stay home and burn oil or gas to keep warm; come out and warm up on the dance floor. It's a lot more fun and you meet the greatest people! reporters - Art/Nancy Clough 201-499-0925

Scallops often can make the difference between something ordinary and some- thing with a designer look. They are not difficult to do as we will learn.

29th NATIONAL SQUARE DANCE CONVENTION® Memphis, Tennessee — June 26, 27 & 28, 1980
It Seems To U4.... Some luxuries have become so integral a part of our daily lives that they are simply taken for
granted -- no one is thankful for their presence. For instance, when a sink tap is turned on or a wall switch flipped up, water or light (respec-tively) should immediately be forthcoming or the unfortunate control (or Utility) bears the brunt of our wrath. A switch means light and a faucet means water without any thought as to what brings them there. For most dancers the NNJSDA means the GRAND SQUARE ---- every two months, five times a year.
Judging the way folks scramble for their copies, the magazine is a very important part of New Jersey's square dance scene. The GRAND SQUARE is taken for granted without a thought of the many people involved, the man-hours invested, and the ever-increasing cost of printing. Well, your Association is glad to bring it to you.
There's a story about a deaf old gentleman who attended church services every Sunday, and fell asleep soon after he found a seat. One day a parishoner asked him why he attended --- if he slept through the religious observance and, if he were awake, he couldn't hear anyhow. The old gent replied that he wanted folks to know which side he was on.
Okay, what side are you on? Do you financailly support GRAND SQUARE, or do you let others do it? Let your fellow dancers know that you are not taking the magazine for granted by donating two dollars (that's only 40c an issue) to the fund that keeps the magazine coming to you. This year we need 100% support from all dancers, so wear your GRAND SQUARE Booster tag proudly and prominently. If you missed paying at the club, mail the $2 to Peg Tirrell (add your club name). Let folks know which side you are on. Sot 6 Hattiette Koved 14 Samo4et Road, Ctan6otd, N.J. 07016

AL The International Association
of Square Dance Callers
For the quarter beginning Jan. 1, 1980, the Quarterly Selection Committee has voted NO NEW MOVEMENTS. The judgement of these callers was based upon the new moves being
written & under consideration by more than 70 callers who regularly work-shop new material for possible use in the various level programs.
Each year the entire membership of CALLERLAB votes to retain, drop or move the calls on the QS list to a different list such as the Mainstream List or perhaps to the Plus Lists, so that the QS list has no more than 10 calls at the start of a new year. Recently it appears that those writing new calls or combination calls have gone beyond the normal scope of the MS Dancer. While CALLERLAB is not criticising any new call, the committee felt that the moves could not comfortably be handled by the typical dancer who dances once a week or perhaps only twice a month, and that is the def-inition of the Mainstream Dancer.
The Committee was quick to point out that there was no scarcity of moves being written. However, many of these moves indicate that the caller & dancers who use them are dancing more frequently than once a week.
For those desiring a workshop tip, it is suggested a review of the existing QS list or perhaps review some of the calls from the MS Lists with which the dancers are a little less confident. The committee urges all callers/teachers, in the interest of standardization, to teach the moves as they are written and not rewrite the calls to accommodate their particular group.

PRESIDENTS' BALL DIFFERENT LOCATION — WATCH FOR FLYERS ELRODS ON ROUNDS
in 1978 CALLERLAB established a Grievance & Review Board as an aid in implementing its "Code of Ethics". Procedures were developed for dealing with complaints concerning the professional conduct between CALLERLAB mem-bers, or between a non-member (caller or dancer) and a CALLERLAB member. The intent - to provide a means of settling grievances on a professional level as quickly as possible.
A grievance is a complaint by a caller, group of callers, dancer, or group of dancers concerning the professional conduct of a CALLERLAB member. A complaint is not considered to be a grievance until attempts towards its solution have been made by one or more parties involved, without sat-is faction to the aggrieved. All complaints must be signed. CALLERLAB understands a desire for privacy and will withhold the writer's name if so requested. Subsequent action by the Review Board might require the re-lease of the name to the caller involved. The Board will act only on grievances which appear to be in violation of the CALLERLAB"Code of Ethics".
CALLERLAB is pleased to announce Bob Fisk, Jerry Haag, Jim Mayo, Dave Taylor, and Don Williamson were recently elected to the Board of Governors. Their five year term of office will begin with the Post Convention meeting in Miami next April 2, 1980.
Have you seen their NJS/651rectory? A lot of work went into
N.J. NJ. It will be a handy guide. If you happen to notice any corrections/omissions, please contact Dick Lighthipe 804 Pros-
pect St., Westfield,NJ 07090. CCNJ Officers serve for the calendar year. A new slate was recently presented. Future plans include its annual Call-ers Festival in February; Bob Kellogg Memorial Scholarship Dance in May 6 4 summer dances...plus constructive workshops for its membership.

Over 150 Round Dance leaders from 24 states and 2
4014)(5. Canadian provinces gathered in San Diego last October \I!;, for the annual ROUNDALAB (International Association of
v-r} R/D Teachers) Convention. It was a great lesson in how teachers of many diversified backgrounds and experiences in the R/D field can work together for the betterment of
the entire profession. The interchange of ideas - the workshops - the enthusiasm was contagiout
and we feel all there came away with the proud feeling of accomplishment. Many R/D terms were defined. Phase 1 & 2 of R/Ding were readied for pre-sentation to CALLERLAB.. Other phases - 3,4,5 & 6 were explored and ten-tatively established; a recommended cue sheet format was adopted. It was a real working convention. Elected to their twelve couple Board of Di-rectors were Harmon/Betty Jorritsma, Bruce/Roberta Bird, Shirley/Bud Parrott & Doc/Peg Tirrell. Jack Chaffee was selected as ROUNDALAB's new Chairman. Next meeting is in Philadelphia, PA October 26-28, 1980.

g,(2 Ri What is missing??? An old eye-catching trick....but turn those same missing letters around and
GR Jj concerned about the future of your club? Your role as an officer? As a member? The smaller size classes? Whether we're teaching too much, too soon? Drop outs? Catch All Eights? Level identification? The reasonings behind them? The transition from graduate to club dancer? The proliferation of the + clubs and fewer Basic clubs? The future of Square and Round Dancing???????
If the answer is YES - plan now to attend LUST - the NNJSDA Leadership Seminar on Sunday afternoon, September 14, 1980 for an afternoon of dis-cussions devoted to the above with an evening of relaxed dincing afterwards.:
