“helping you communicate through photos”
Elements of good photography
1. Composition2. Design3. Light4. Camera technique5. Personal style
Composition and design
A photo is an image placed inside a frame. Good photography is deciding what to place inside that frame and how to arrange it.1. Rule of thirds2. Balance3. Angles4. Lines5. Shapes6. Textures
Balane (symmetry)
1.Two equal parts2.Creates a sense of balance with elements3.Sense of equal weight
Unbalanced (asymmetrical) composition
1.Background distractions unwanted2.Two haves are not equal
The rule of thirds• The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine
breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts
Rule of thirds use• In learning how to use the rule of thirds, the most important
questions to be asking of yourself are:1.What are the points of interest in this shot?2.Where am I intentionally placing them?
Lines an element of photography
• A line is long relative to its width. It can define a space, create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture and allude to mass or volume
Shape as an element of photography• Geometric shapes – circles, rectangles, squares, triangles and
so on – have the clear edges one achieves when using tools to create such shapes.• Organic shapes have natural, less well defined edges (think:
an amoeba, or a cloud)
texture• Another element of art, is used to describe either the way a
three-dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual fel of a two-dimensional work
perspective• Refers to the point from the subject is viewed• Establishes emphasis• “birds eye, worm view, up close, far away”
