Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is so much more than a visitor attraction; it wasestablished in 1980 after volunteers put derelict land to good use. Since then it has

grown into a 25 acre educational wildlife haven, preserving a green area for future

generations in an increasingly urbanised part of Leeds.

We use our natural surroundings to make a profound and long-lasting impact on

school children, marginalised young people and vulnerable adults in the community

and beyond. Our ethos of sustainability is echoed throughout everything we do.

Our educational projects are one of the most important areas of our work; we are

passionate about encouraging inner city children to develop a lifelong understanding

of the world they live in and their impact on it. We have over 10,000 children and their

families involved in these projects every year and we hope to be able to increase this

    in the future.

Over the years, we have received the following awards

    for our hard-work:

    Spirit of Leeds Awards

Yorkshire Forward Creating Better Futures Award

    Green Apple Environment Award

    Millennium Marque Awards

    City and Community Pride Award

    Recycled Mountain Bike Project

The aim of the project is to give children the opportunity to learn

how to confidently ride a bike, basic bike maintenance and

safety skills. Once they have learnt how to strip down and

reassemble a bike, they attend a recognised road safety training

course and take part in an off road ride.

The children have a great sense of accomplishment as they have

built their own bike, which they get to take home as a reward.

Some of the completed bikes will be donated to African orphans

in the village of Malawi. The remainder are sold cheaply at the

Farm, with the money raised being used to buy tools for our

    educational projects.

Starting a long and meaningful relationship with us is

a great way to give something back to thecommunity. Situated in inner city Leeds were the

perfect example that theres a haven for everyone,

even in the most unexpected places.

CSR days are a brilliant way for you to provide your

staff members with a welcome break from the

office, giving them the opportunity to work outside,

(particularly beneficial on a crisp winters day!)

surrounded by nature, as well as helping to

cultivate skills in communication, problem solving

    and team work.

We offer a wide variety of sustainable,

    environmentally positive and successful projects

from team building to volunteering. You can spend

the day with us (planting trees or coppicing for

example) or you can work with us on a longer basis. A longer term relationship

with the Farm will enable to you to start a worthwhile project which you can see

through to the end, really showing you the impact your time and money can have.

FeesWe ask for a small fee of 200 for the

day which covers up to 30 delegates.

This cost covers the equipment as well

as supervision from one of our expert

    team members.

If you would like to send a larger group

to spend the day with us we are more

than happy to cater for them and anappropriate fee can be negotiated.

For four years, HSBC have been working

alongside us to create a strong and

    meaningful relationship.

    Theyve sent us many wonderful

volunteers over the years who have

worked on several great projects such as

tree planting, taking down old fencing

    and even weeding!

We are happy to continue this great

relationship which gives so much to both

the local and wider community. Many of

our staff who have volunteered here over

the years have since returned with their

    families for an educational and

    entertaining day out.

    Paula Rigby, Community Officer

What a challenging, physical and brilliantly enjoyable day.

Our team worked hard on the bike track, collected wild

flower seeds for planting a wild flower meadow and got to

wade around in the beck clearing it of rubbish. All in one

    day!

All abilities were catered for and it was clear that a lot of

thought and preparation had gone in to the day. A big thank

you to our leaders, Rob and Sean, who assisted, advised and

helped us get the most out of a truly unique experience.

The chance to give back made us feel like we had really

helped the Farm and the community it supports. Thank you

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, we hope to see you againsoon, (and have a sneaky ride on the bike track!).

    George Roe, People Development

The teams have given very positive feedback over the past

years. They really appreciate having the opportunity to

volunteer regularly because they like the fact that they can

build up a relationship with the staff and see their ongoing

developments on the farm; particularly the wild flower

    meadow, cycle track and pond.

Its a really positive feeling having a clearly defined task tobe fully engaged in, its great being able to work hard and

see a completed task at the end of the day. Most volunteers

like being given the chance to learn more about

conservation, wildlife and about wider community

    involvement.Sharon Browne, Project Officer
