A Message from the Rabbi

The second century rabbinic text Pirkei Avot Ethics of the Sages is a compilation of the ethical teachings and maxims of the Rabbis of the Mishnaic period. It is a unique text in that it deals solely with ethical and moral principles, providing a fount of wisdom for its students and a collection of maxims and sayings on principles of proper human conduct. Although to the present day mind these subjects are not religious, for the Jewish people, this most popular Talmudic tractate is holy and is studied during the summer months by sage and novice alike. The second chapter of the text quotes Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai who taught Go and see which is a good path of life to which one should cleave. His student, Rabbi Eliezer said a generous eye meaning one who is optimistic and hopeful and who sees good in everyone. A good friend one who is responsible, someone you can count on. Rabbi Jose said a good neighbor one who is caring; one who advocates on behalf of the community, supports it and sustains it. Rabbi Simeon said one who has vision a person with wisdom, with foresight and the ability to discern the best way of moving forward; one who acts purposefully. Rabbi Elazar said one who has a good heart one who puts aside their own interests and seeks the welfare of others. Rabbi Johanan concluded all of my students suggested noble virtues and lofty qualities but Rabbi Elazars suggestion a good heart encompasses them all. Our Guest of Honor our dear friend our guide and leader the pillar of our congregation and most esteemed and beloved member Harold Anfang mirrors the qualities and traits of character suggested by each of Rabbi Johanans students. Harold, in serving as treasurer of our congregation for many years, has seen to the fiscal health of our congregation. He is generous with his substance and time. He attends services unfailingly and is in the office on weekends and evenings to make sure that the shul is in order. He has provided counsel for officers and Board members of our Congregation and I can attest to the truth that he is a source of wisdom and guidance for clergy. The Sadie Anfang Memorial Weekends have been, not only a tribute to the memory of his mother, Sadie Anfang, of blessed memory, a memory that Harold cherishes, but also an opportunity to engage the spirit and stimulate the intellect with which we, as a Congregation, have been nurtured. Friends, the siddur put it plainly in the 19th Psalm ayn omer vayn devarim words do not suffice and no tribute could do justice to how we feel about Harold; how blessed we are and how grateful we need to be, that the path that Rabbi Johanan described is a path that brought Harold to us. We wish Harold health and well being as well as arikhut yamim length of days with appreciation from a most grateful congregation. Rabbi David Gaffney

Dear Friends: Serving as CSFAs president for the past two years has been a privilege. Thank you all for your support, rachmones on me, and dedication to our shul. CSFA is facing several important changes and I urge you to give your full support to Rabbi Schwartz, Rabbi Gaffney and Russ Winer. Shaun and I want to thank each and every one of you for your friendship and support through the years. Also, thank you for the patience and kindness extended to Rachel, Jacob, and Josie. CSFA truly was our home away from home and we will miss all of you. When it comes to decisions about our kehila, Harold Anfang always uses the framework Is it best for the shul? when making a decision. While working with Harold, we have evaluated rabbinical candidates, chazanim for holidays and Shabbat, building plans, guest speakers, contractual issues, and much more. If he had a personal preference, and it conflicted with what he thought was best for the shul, he always sided with what he thought was best for the shul. Always.
