Classic South • April 2015 Page 11The many benefits of hiringa professional landscaper

The flowers are blooming, andthe grass has begun to growanew, making spring a great timefor homeowners to once againturn their attention to landscap-ing. Those who aren't looking for-ward to dusting off their lawn-mowers and rethreading theirstring trimmers may want to hireprofessional landscapers to tendto their lawns and gardens.

A recent joint study by theNational Gardening Association,Residential Lawn and LandscapeServices and the Value ofLandscaping found that home-owners spend roughly $45 billionper year on professional lawn andlandscape services, as nearly 30

percent of all households acrossthe United States use at least onetype of lawn or landscape serv-ice. The rising use of lawn careservices is indicative of home-owners' appreciation of the con-venience and craftsmanship pro-fessional services can provide. While the impact professionallandscapers can have on a prop-erty's aesthetic appeal is consid-erable, homeowners also benefitfrom working with professionallandscapers in various otherways.

· Time savings: One of thebiggest benefits of leaving lawncare to the professionals is theamount of time it will save for the

average homeowner. Lawns gen-erally need to be mowed once perweek during the spring and sum-mer seasons and, depending onthe size of the property, that cantake an hour or more. Add thetime it takes to clean up clippings, mulch landscaping beds andedge the property, and homeown-ers can expect to devote a signif-icant chunk of their weekends tocaring for their lawns. Lawn serv-ices employ a few workers whomake fast work of the job, leavinghomeowners time to enjoy theirweekends however they see fit.

· Reduced risk for injury:Maintaining a landscape is hardwork, and those unaccustomed to

this type of activity may find them-selves winded or at risk of injury.Improper use of lawn equipmentalso is a safety hazard. Leavingthe work to professionals canhelp homeowners avoid strainedbacks, lacerations, pulled mus-cles, sunburns, and any otherdangers that can result whentackling landscaping projects.

· Financial savings: On the sur-face, hiring a landscaping servicemay seem like a costly venture. However, after crunching somenumbers, many homeownersrealize that doing the work them-

selves may cost more in the long run than hiring a professional land-scaping service. Homeowners who decide to go it alone must pur-chase expensive equipment, and those lawn tools will require routinemaintenance, which costs additional money. Inexperienced homeown-ers may incur extra fees to "fix" mistakes that occur during the learn-ing process. Each year, new seed, fertilizer, mulch, pesticides, andother supplies also must be purchased. But professional lawn careservices typically charge a set fee per month, and that fee covers themaintenance of both your property and the equipment needed to keepthat property looking great.

· Know-how: Many professional landscapers know how to addresslawn care issues that may arise throughout the year. They will knowhow to deal with dry patches of lawn or poorly draining areas, and theyalso can make recommendations on plants that will thrive under cer-tain conditions.

· One-stop shopping: Certain landscaping services provide many dif-ferent options for prospective customers. Basic lawn cuts may be onepackage, but there also may be services for seasonal seeding, weed-ing, leaf clean-up, and winterizing.

· Consistent maintenance: Homeowners who frequently travel orspend much of their summers away from home often find that lawncare companies are a wise investment. Established weekly schedulesensure the landscape always will look its best whether homeownersare home or out of town.

Spring is a great time for homeowners to decide if hiring profession-al landscaping services is in their best interests. The time and moneysaved, as well as impact professional landscapers can have on a prop-erty, makes landscaping services a great investment for many home-owners
