CROWN LENGTHENING FOR COSMETICS & RESTORATION COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. One in ten patients between of the age of 20 and 30 years has a “gummy smile”. Distinguish the various causes of excessive gingival display and learn when it can be corrected with crown lengthening surgery. 2. Learn diagnostic steps that improve your certainty in pre-operative case selection for cosmetic and restorative crown lengthening and review special considerations for patients on bone-building and anticoagulant medications. 3. Crown lengthening procedures can be psychologically difficult for the practitioner due to the extent of bone and soft tissue to be removed: Learn to MEASURE, MARK, AND CUT soft tissue and bone according to predeter- mined objectives and practice your skills on a pig mandible. 4. Review the validity of “biologic width” based on recent literature. Understand the dimensional changes in soft and hard tissue after surgery, the variables which influence how long to wait before the final impression, and how to compensate for an excessively thin or thick gingival biotype.
