Something in excess of 60” wide, is this very different thick but not too heavy long haired polyester moleskin. Now I am having to have a little reflection on what I’ve just said. This cloth is in fact two layers of the outer fabric, in between which is a sponge-like membrane which will add to the wind-proofness and waterproofness. It is ridiculously soft, beautiful to handle and absolutely fabulous to look at and I can imagine that a gillet made out of this would be astonishing. It’s in cream.

✿✿ A ROSE AMONGST THORNSA slight exaggeration as this did come in with some other fabulous gear, this is a superb 64” wide superfine wool gabardine in khaki, fairly special.

✿✿ ACCORD WITHINCotton babycord in black. If it was any finer it would disappear. There’s an awful lot of very fine yarn in the production of a cloth to be able to cut it as fine as this. Fabulous.

✿✿ AMBROSE 54” wide cotton in white, with an embroidered circle pattern, also in white. The sizes of the circles are about 3cm or an” and a half and in between or surrounding the circles are some crochet like work, which of course you can see through.

✿✿ AN ENIGMA VARIATIONWhen in doubt give it a clout, when you’re in a hole stop digging, and so on and so forth. I am little bit stumped as to what you might do with this cloth, I ought not to be - I have been in this business long enough not to be, but anyway I will describe it and you can make your own mind up. 60” wide at least, knitted polyester jersey, of a weight suitable for ponchos and the like. It has a fair amount of stretchiness in the width suggesting that there is some lycra or Elastane there and is heavily patterned. If you didn’t want to wear it would go down well as a covering for a scruffy old sofa in a student flat- very much of the designer type of fabric and very much a one-off.


✿✿ ANIMAL KINGDOMAlice - There was a famous Alice from Burnley whose house includes a butterfly collection. This cloth has certainly collected a few butterflies among its flowers. Very bright, very cheerful, perfect for little girls.


Dinopaws - A lovely dinosaur novelty print on grey ground.

Since on the recording machine I was confronted by Andrew,

and another bloke from where I know not, humping a rickety old table

from our original croft mill premises which is known as Marilyn’s packing table.

And the reason it has been brought here is that we didn’t have a packing table

the right height; well at least not the right height for an average size person.

Perhaps I will be asked to assist in the reassembly at some time in the not

too distant future. Incidentally, Shaky Tables is a name of a restaurant I have

visited, as indeed has Caroline in Australia. Not a million miles away from

several quite famous wine estates, but when we were there we stayed in a

much smaller one - the Blue Bush Estate in the Hunter Valley; where we had

a free run of the property while the owners, very trustworthily, left for Sydney

for a couple of days. This restaurant which was in the middle of nowhere was

packed, happy days eh? Any road up...we are here to talk about cloth and as

is my want I shall start at the beginning and no doubt people will put them in

a different order by the time you come to read it.

Caroline tells me that we are through to the final stages of the ‘Sew’

60” wide woollen upholstery fabric made by Bute weavers in scotland. We’ve only 10 metres of it, it’s in a light golden-beige with a sort of corded striped weave. It is not smooth, ie there is a lot of texture. You could make a jacket, or even a coat out of it - it is that sort of weight. But it is an upholstery cloth.


✿✿ BEEF TOMATO56” wide Spanish viscose twill dress fabric in black with a lot of colourful leaf decoration in grey, pale grey, peach, rust and purple and cream. None of your vine grown tomatoes here this is a lovely big tasty cloth. Super quality.


✿✿ BEST IN CLASS60” wide superb cotton velvets, or maybe even velveteens; very finely woven and very finely raised fabric, with a pattern printed as though it has been chopped.

✿✿ BETTER NO LIKE60” wide polyester, with a hint of stretch. Blouse fabric in an abstract floral design; in white, dark blue, black, lime and mint green. There’s a lot of white showing and the whole thing to me has feeling of movement. Very striking.


✿✿ BLACK DRESS FABRICSAs Tears Go By it is the Evening of the Day, I Sit and Watch… Width 59”/150cm For those of us who can remember the era, from which that song came, you may have had a garment made out of this rather fabulous black polyester dress fabric. It is somewhat shiny and definitely made for the posh side of things. A rather beautiful cloth. On the label it says ‘Canadian peach skin’ - it is not a peach skin in my mind but it is nice and soft. Width 59”/150cm £5.75 per metre.We also have this cloth in b) Royal Blue.


Black Pudding - 60” wide, black poly/wool/viscose crepe in a good dress/ trouser weight. And perhaps with just a hint of lycra. Scrunches beautifully without creasing and has a very soft hand.


Captain’s Ball - 60” wide polyester with elastane evening dress fabric, comes in black; with wonderful almost tree bark like patterning, also in black. Which looks very sophisticated and distinctive the further you get away from it; well up to a point of course; get too far away and you can’t see it at all. Rather splendid for the ship’s captain or the golf club captain - not for them personally of course it’s for someone else to wear at their ball.


Nights in Black Satin - Approximately 60” Wide cotton lightweight satin, with enough fine yarn to make two lots of cloth. There has obviously been some treatment to get the cloth to have this, rather exquisite dull shine, but the amount of yarn in it would have almost have done it by itself. Something akin to a light shirt weight.

Satin Flowers - 46” wide polyester, woven hopsack like fabric. Not too tight a weave, I think the word is relaxed, upon which have been sewn black satin flowers. All of which have 5 petals and overall diameter is 4 cm or better still 2” and these too are in black but in a contrasting shinier satin cloth. Expensive cloth from a top maker.

Second Lieutenant’s Ball - Now I know there’s no such thing as a second lieutenants ball. But perhaps if there was it might be a little more light-hearted, perhaps even a tad naughty. And if that were the case, one might consider wearing a frock made out of this; fairly sensuous black polyester, slinky jersey with a sheen on the top. Virtually creaseless so that if you did have a slight accident it wouldn’t take much to get it ready for tomorrow night’s ball.


The Big Swirl - Darkest black polyester/Lycra lightweight skirt cloth or trousers for that matter but not jackets, beautifully soft and wonderfully swirly fabric. Quite densely woven polyester crepe suiting.


Black Ripstop Canvas - Black polyester ripstop canvas.


✿✿ BLACKOUT60” wide, superb 97% cotton/3% elastane trousering, chino weight, with a dull satin finish.


✿✿ BLUE60” wide cotton poplin in a big blue abstract design on a cream ground. the design is a sort of floral and leaf pattern and there are many shades of blue but the predominant one is a rich French navy and there is black outlining on the petals of the flowers. I’m not absolutely certain that this was made for a man’s summer smock shirt but if it was it is wonderful; for a big skirt - even better.

56” wide proper pink paisley dress fabric 100% viscose - a largish pattern which incorporates odd smattering of sage green, grey and white but lots of pinks also.


✿✿ BRITISH WOOL CLOTHSadly, harder to get as the furnishing industry snaps them up and sells them at twice, even three times, the price. However here we have small amounts of the following:

Donegal - A 60” wide woollen Donegal tweed in a mixture of red, pink, beige, black, maroon and other odd sundry colours mixed in too form the tweed. Suiting weight, rather than a coat weight. Another beautiful cloth; woven, hand finished entirely in Yorkshire.


Lamb - Grey pure new wool jacketing / lightweight coating. It is not a plain flat grey, there is a suggestion of other tones in it. It has the appearance of a sort of flattened lambs wool weave if you will, with an ever so slightly polished finish. Exquisite.

Yorkshire Tweed - We’ve only got an odd twenty-seven metres of this absolutely glorious flat check, Yorkshire made wool suiting. To be absolutely honest I’m not so sure you would make a suit out of it, but if it was for a lady it would be a skirt or a jacket. And if a man, just a jacket; I don’t think you would make the...but who knows? It’s made up of dark brown, blue, black, pale blue and various shades of brown yarns in quite a large, window pane check. Typical of the sort of thing you make hunting stuff out of. It doesn’t come a lot better than this.

Trouser Man - If I have a weakness- I must say, it is buying trousers but then I proceed to wear the ones that I had on yesterday and probably the day before, which then get washed and put back on top as it were, and we start all over again. So I have lots of trousers that never get worn until it comes to holidays when my wife won’t allow me to wear them. They are too bright; too garish, too big, too tight. Anyway, here’s a cloth that I would really like to have a pair of trousers made from. It’s an 8 wale, fairly chunky, soft finished cotton corduroy trousering in camel. Doesn’t get any better.

The cloth is 60” wide, the zebra pattern stripes don’t bedazzle, they are quite easy on the eye and the cloth certainly, from a medium sort of distance, is extremely classy. As you get up to it you are drawn to the detail, in the print and all in all I think it is an outstanding cloth.

For those of you from an era, that many want to forget about, you will recall It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. And in this programme, there is a troop of Troubadours sent to the jungles to entertain the troops and they wore all manor of garments made in this lightweight khaki cotton. Perhaps the best of which were Don Estelle’s shorts which were big enough to sail a fair sized yacht. Any road, we have got this absolutely gorgeous, lightweight cotton twill trousering in said khaki colour. So you can look as good or as daft as you like in a pair of trousers or shorts made from it.

Four wonderful shirting fabrics ex Paul Smith surplus stock. Yum Yum, my three year old grandson says along with a slurping sound and a cheeky look whenever he gets to eat something he likes. It’s funny how this never leaves you, now it’s just over a delicious cloth.

c) Finest Shirting Navy - Beautiful quality cotton lawn shirting in navy. Width: 60”/152cm

d) To Have and To Hold - Made from two fold, 180’s supremely fine long staple cotton. This shirting in a very tiny window pane check, has very much the hand of silk, as it might being as fine as it is and is made up of navy blue, white and red yarns. This cloth is Italian but there were cloths in the good old days, fabrics as fine as this were woven on Lancashire looms, but there was probably one weaver to two or three looms. Width: 58”/148cm

e) Tatt - 60” wide superfine cotton twill shirting with a sort of Tattersall check in blue, green, grey and dark red. the squares formed by the woven check are one cm square., made for Paul Smith- the quality is exceptional and it’s a cloth that won’t lose is class or its colour almost forever. Width: 60”/152cm

f) Super 180s - Silver - 60” wide cotton shirting of the finest possible variety in a marled grey. Outstanding 59”(150cm) Wide

✿✿ FINISHED OFF150cm (59” wide) fine gorgeous cotton poplin in cream, with a bit a bit of a slippery finish to it - extremely fine. Pre-shrunk, perfect for dying and printing onto. Like everything good quality is hard to come by and this is a job lot, if you want decent quantities call us for a bulk price.

✿✿ FUR FABRICSWe bought these some time ago and have never done anything about them. Silly really as they cost the earth. Two very expensive fur fabrics.

a) Barney - 140cm/54” wide. Short hair fur fabric, in a dark cream which actually looks almost camel coloured when the pile is brushed t’other way. You can see if you push your fingers through the pile how the light effects the way the pile is laying. It’s a closely cropped fur, gorgeously soft and at the same time tough. Width: 54”/140cm £ 15.00 per metre

b) Further More - 60” wide, fantastic imitation fur fabric, in a beautiful muttle shade of grey/brown/silver with a black cloth that is actually all cream and light brown. So if you spread the fur, you can get lighter tones than the overall outside colour. It doesn’t get a lot better than this. The pile is probably a little over a centimetre long and ‘plays’ beautifully. Width: 60”/152cm £15.00 per metre

G✿✿ GERMAN TROUSERING

It doesn’t get much better in the world of cotton trouser fabric than these manufactured in Germany. Here we have a magnificent selection.

Cotton Gabardine a) Green Tea - Lightweight cotton gabardine in a not too creamy cream, pretty much of the bowling/ croquet kind of colour.

b) One of those days - Cotton gabardine trousering in pale grey. Beautiful cloth but you might need to embellish it to brighten it up.

c) Boris - 60” wide fine cotton lightweight gabardine in a rich camel colour. Sufficiently finely woven to give the cloth a sheen, it is not artificial, it is the quality of the yarn and the tightness of the weave that has caused this. It won’t be that often that he has a smart cloth named after him.


✿✿ COTTON/POLY GABARDINECotton rich Gabardine suiting fabrics.

a) Cherry Ripe - 60” wide (at least) cotton rich cotton/poly gabardine trousering pleasant shade of cherry red, not shouting, not whispering; just talking. This is the last roll. There is a fault every 2 metres so it is reduced to £5.00 per metre.

b) Lime Grove - 62” poly/cotton trousering. A bright, but not too bright, mint. Very refreshing.

c) Lotta Bottle - 59” wide cotton rich cotton/poly chino in dark bottle green and with very fine twill weave.

✿✿ SANDED TROUSERINGThis has been sanded so it has a lovely soft feel, almost like a baby’s bottom.

HOUND DOGHIDDEN GARDEN HAITI


b) How Now - 60” wide cotton lightweight Teflon coated trousering in dark chocolate sort of brown, a light sanding has given it a fabulous hand.


H✿✿ HAITI

60” wide, silky polyester jersey in a black and deep turquoise zigzag print. The edges of the zigzags are not even, almost like a dye that has run but on a little bit. Has something of an element of voodoo to it.


✿✿ HAMMERLEThere are those amongst you that may remember, when we used to be able get hold of Hammerle fabrics. Hammerle are very famous, and rightly so, shirting manufacturer in Austria. They produced wondrous shirting fabrics.

The likes of which sadly our manufacturers were never able to. This 52” wide, cotton lycra shirting fabric could well be theirs, but there were also other Austrian manufacturers of who were equally as good. The cloth is from Austria and it’s very different. So I will gather myself and tell you about it. The reason it is the width it is, is because of the Lycra which draws the cloth, in so it probably started off as a 60” cloth. It’s a multi-faceted stripe and from the left hand edge I will describe it to you. The first stripe is very much like a lightweight denim, but in grey. The next band of stripes are a very pale lime green, orange and blue on a white background and this is about an” wide. Then there’s another stripe same as the first one - a grey denim which is also about an” wide and this goes on along the cloth. It really is very clever and a beautifully made cloth and as different as you will ever see


✿✿ HARKING BACKAs grass grows surely under your feet, so cloth comes and goes. And there are some that time cannot improve upon. This is one such. A 45” wide, soft, very fine cotton twill made up of sage green and pale blue yarns. Which have the effect of giving a bit of a shocked appearance to

the surface; the overall effect is green. A lovely green, having been made more like a sea green with the introduction of the pale blue weft. I think this is quite an old cloth, because it has inspection stickers on it, which they tend not to put on these days.


✿✿ HIDDEN GARDEN54” wide viscose dress fabric in an all extended, all over floral-come-jungle print, with hidden amongst the foliage and flowers are butterflies. It has lots of different muted colours in the design and there is no predominance of any particular one, but they are very gentle


✿✿ HOUND DOG60” wide polyester/acrylic double jersey, in a fairly large dogtooth check in grey and black. A good looking, easy care cloth in a weight suitable for jackets.


J✿✿ JAM

60” poly/cotton satin dress fabric, in a nice shade of damson. There is a hint of stretch which will help with the appearance and performance of the fabric.


L✿✿ LACE

54/56” wide cream cotton with polyester lace. With a lovely soft finish and a very floral pattern.

a) Boiled Wool - 54” wide, fabulous pure new wool boucle coating in navy blue. Say no more. Width: 54”/137cm. Price: £22.00 per metre.

b) Great Coat - 147cm supremely made heavyweight, force quality, navy pure new wool course melton coating. Bit like the stuff that Jack Hawkins used to strut about in under the sea or whatever the film was. There’s precious little of it but when opportunities present themselves one must avail mustn’t one. c) Guinness - 60” poly wool melton German jacket cloth in cream. With perhaps just a tint of a pinkish tinge, although that could be the light I’m standing in. It has a self-coloured window pane check in the weave, it is beautifully soft and whilst not everyone’s cup of tea colour-wise, it’s a wonderful cloth. Width: 60”/152cm Price: £15 per metre.

d) Hey Now - 60” wide wool lightweight, melton like suiting; in black with an all over floral pattern, which almost looks like a misprint in grey. So there’s no major pieces of grey in the print, it is all sort of broken, it looks almost as if having printed it, someone has gone ‘ohh there is too much ink on that’ and blotted it, to break up the grey. Does that make any sense? The overall effect is very, very stunning and it will make a beautiful jacket. The reverse side is plain black, and has a slight blue weave so there is a possibility you could do things inside out with this. Width: 60”/152cm Price: £8.50 per metre.

e) Knee Trembler - 60” wide, 70% woo, 20% nylon, 10% cashmere melton coating in a rich camel. This stuff does not grow on trees; make the most of it. Width: 60”/152cm. Price: £20 per metre.

f) Joey Garcia - 59 wide 100% pure new wool jacketing in a black heavy crepe like weave would suit long skirts as well as jackets and it from one of Italy’s top makers. Width: 59”/150cm Price: £12 per metre.

g) Oddity - This is a rare, and beautiful oddity. It is a 60” wide, wool with some lycra, knitted lightweight bouclé with a bit of a brushed finished. If there is a downside, it might be the colour; which is a very coffee sort of brown. I don’t think it is a drawback because I like brown, but if you don’t like brown it’s a serious drawback. But as I say, coating/jacketing. It is Wonderful. Width: 60”/152cm Price: £8.50 per metre.

h) Splendiferous - Splendid Cotton jacketing in a navy blue thick twill weave with the pattern of the twill prominent. It has a very very soft hand and went into expensive jackets- gorgeous stuff. It is 59” wide. Price: £6.75 per metre.

Red Daisy - You don’t often get red daisies, at least not here up’t north. However the white outline of the flowers on this red cotton are most certainly daisies. Very pretty.


✿✿ NIGHT GARDEN56” wide, dark navy blue, pure silk, fine blouse cloth, with a floral decoration in silver/gold and deep turquoise. There’s something rather Japanese about this and its absolutely gorgeous.


✿✿ NOTHING BUT60 wide viscose lycra jersey in a fairly large black and off white hounds tooth check which isn’t straightforward throughout the cloth there are areas of more black than cream and then areas where there is more cream than black - so it’s a pattern within a pattern. Quite stunning.


O✿✿ OPHELIA

It is hard to tell what the base colour of this viscose fabric is, the pattern is so intermingled. However I think that it is black, with the pattern consisting of green, blue, beige and cream. It has quite a bit of stretch and a lovely hand. Very Boden-esque


✿✿ ONE I MADE EARLIER picture on page 16

56” wide polyester hessian “grey and white.” This cloth has a fairly open weave, but very fine it is. Extremely drapey and doesn’t crease, and although soft, has enough in the weave to give it a slightly textured finish. I am certain as I can be that I’ve seen this cloth in jackets, but it would suit dresses too.

a) Cross Hatch - To be or not to be...Black, not a pure dark black fabric, albeit a stunning cloth. Some blacks can be a little paler than others and it is fair to say that this is one of these. A good weight cotton suiting fabric with a cross hatch weave which gives it a look of linen. Very nice for smart/casual wear suiting. Width: 55” /140cm £6.50 per metre

b) Parade - 58” wide 100% cotton chino trousering in a true khaki, with a little bit of weave interest in the form of a self-coloured fancy, intermittent stripe; whose yarns are ever so slightly shinier than the back cloth.

✿✿ SEE YOU LATER56” wide tencel shirting in an abstract/chamelian/alligator patterning in cream and different shades of grey. Very, very soft and very, very crease resistant. This was made in France for the label Kooples - young designer wear, one of the favourites of the office I am told.


✿✿ SHRINKING FEELING As I approach my umpteenth birthday, and as hard I try to stand tall, I can’t see over some of these racks of cloth; which it makes it a bit of a hard job as it means I then have to go round t’other side and perhaps do a bit of climbing. But I have just found a cloth that was worth the effort. A 60” wide, polyester crepe of a dress/suiting weight in a rather magnificent shade of a RAF Blue/Mauve...that is to say it is a bluey-mauve, or a mauvey-blue. Easy care, easy wear. And as dressed up or down as you would like.


✿✿ SLINKYThe width of this polyester cloth suggests to me, that it has been made for underwear. It’s quite stretchy, so I can’t be exact about the width but it’s around the 50” mark and comes in a pale olive green or silvery pale grey. It doesn’t have to disappear under anything, it can be worn on top in its own right, it’s a beautifully made article. a) Mid olive green b) Pale silver


✿✿ SOMETHING SPECIALHere we have two expensive John Kaldor evening dress fabrics. Both of these would work well with any of our black dress fabrics.

Body Warmer - 60” wide, polyester/lycra net in black with black individually made flowers stuck on to it. The flowers themselves vary from 4cm to 10cm wide and they are in rows. You would certainly have to wear your Liberty bodice under this.


Spanish Eyes - 56” wide beautiful polyester lace in a fine but dense enough pattern to hide all that you want to hide and enough yarn in it to let it hang under its own weight.


✿✿ SPORTING CHANCE 60” wide 35% cotton, 35% Linen, 30% silk lightweight hounds tooth checked suiting in cream and pale mushroom, with a fine line over-check in yellow. Might be a tad old-fashioned, but they are still making it. Beautifully made cloth with a lovely hand.


✿✿ STAY LOOSE62” wide super white polyester heavy “cheesecloth” probably white enough and good enough to make flowing garments that are worn in Saudi Arabia. And if looked after will keep this wonderful whiteness for years to come. Great for tablecloths too.


✿✿ SUPER D60” wide, beautiful, lightweight, woollen suiting cloth, in a very fine Donegal tweed. In all truth it can’t be Donegal tweed because there is not enough specks of colour, and it’s not coarse enough. In fact it feels beautifully soft.But nonetheless its quite beautiful

a) Dark Navy - They sold it us as black it is so dark, but it is not black, nor a true classic navy- 98% cotton, 2% lycra. Width: 61”/115cm c) Very Dark Rich Purple - 100% cotton. Width: 57”/145cm d) Grey - 98% cotton, 2% lycra.

The black and the navy are slightly heavier than the purple but they all equally fine and equally fabulous.

✿✿ VISCOSE JERSEY - NEWA lovely fine and nice quality viscose jersey fabric in a stunning peach, cream or ivory... this would be very nice made into tops.This is great quality, and drapes a dream. W✿✿ WATERPROOFS

Royal Blue - 60’’ wide washables, breathable polyester weave coated royal blue canvas- made for one of the big names in the outdoor sector.

✿✿ WHAT HAVE WE HERE?A 60” wide cotton/spandex “denim” with a bit of widths-way stretch in a sort of middle-black and very dark grey, with a flat linen-like length-ways slub and a fairly fine, and sparse splattering of silver speckles. Now who would want to do that? Perhaps it was an accident, but the result is quite magnificent, it can be anything from a very expensive looking suiting to a pair of disco pumps. It has a lovely soft hands, and should be easy to look after.


✿✿ WILD THING 60” wide, polyester georgette in an eruption of vivid colour. In fact that’s exactly what the pattern depicts - an eruption. Bright red, orange, purple, blue, lime fabulous really. Scrumptious as a wrap.


✿✿ WRIGGLE INI know that has other connotations, but this is a knitted 60” wide wool cloth. Which has had the ribs knitted into it, probably then aided and abetted by some pivotal process but the ribbing/bedding is permanent and is quite unusual. It is a lightweight cloth in black, with slightly ‘hairy’ in grey. So the black is in fact not dense, but broken up somewhat. A challenging sort of cloth, forgive it hardwearing, but it is exceptionally soft. Wonderful to handle and absolutely astonishing to look at it. If there is enough of it, buy it all.


✿✿ 50 SHADESTiny grey and white check suiting. Another Paul Smith Italian made, very soft cotton, this has been lightly brushed to give it this soft handle that would be equally at home in a big floppy shirt or a pair of trousers or indeed way not a jacket. But I think that this is another cloth that we’re very lucky to have. Caroline tells me that this is all the rage in the men’s smart/casual jackets seen in Ted Baker, Riess and Paul Smith. a) Light Grey - Width: 59”/150cm. b) Dark Grey - Width 59”/150cm.
