Black as night poly/cotton shirting with a lovely soft finish.

✿✿ AFtEr thE StOrmA cotton poplin with a very colourful Hawaiian/ south sea island print depicting the sea and sunshine, flowers, sailing boats and palm trees. It is in blues, greens, yellows and white. Truly outstanding.


✿✿ APPrOPOSAlmost 60” (152 cm) wide exceptional black cotton/lycra jersey with an embroidered floral jersey ribbon pattern.This is a heavy weight jersey which feels superb, picture on the back page.

A ruched polyester from evening jackets in dark brown with a paler brown random line woven pattern.

REF: CM242 52” (132 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ AS NEAr ASA 100% cotton chambray shirting. Not a traditional chambray where there is as much white as blue, this has more prominent blue yarns than white and it has a very faint twill weave. A good weight as in heavy shirting/skirt/summer trouser like fabric. It is a lovely shade of blue and the cloth is outstanding.


✿✿ A FAltEriNg FEDErErFor some reason we said this was green in our last catalogue, a typo error. 70% cotton 30% linen cloth in Ivory which is probably made for shorts or trousers maybe for tennis players, as wonderful as Roger Federer is. Sadly we have an odd 10mtrs which has got a rogue yarn in it. This yarn is about 12” in from one of the selvedges and isn’t constant, it’s picked up a bit of dye from somewhere it shouldn’t have done and it didn’t bleach out. So it’s marred so instead of £10.00mtr it’s only £3.50mtr.


✿✿ AltErNAtivE thErAPyA 30% wool 70% viscose dress fabric, the base cloth is a dark brown with a hint of brown perhaps, upon which are printed little explosive star shapes, almost firework display like. Have you got the drift, when a rocket goes up it explodes into thousands of little bursty things, well it’s like that. It has a lovely soft hand and I suspect it is made as an alternative to viyella, Made in Italy and is very classy.

✿✿ AmbEr NECtArWhilst I wouldn’t wish any cloth to remind anyone of beer this particular amber cloth I have to tell you about is perhaps a bit more of a Polynesian gold and I know you will be wondering how on earth does he know what that’s all about and I can only tell you it comes from one of the Technicolor films we have just been talking about. Coffee coloured might be the way that advertising people would describe it now if it was make-up, a glorious sultry, amber/gold. It is actually a film adhered to a thin black polyester jersey. Exactly what you would use it for I am unsure. Lightweight and pliable because it’s a knitted fabric, I am told it was used for blouses and dresses. The price is almost worth the colour alone.

The Good the Bad and the UglyBelated New Year greetings to you all and, just like the Coalition, I can promise that it is a New Year. Like everything else cloth will come and cloth will go. Airplanes will continue to be full wherever they are going and there will be a hosepipe ban - you just wait! The daily weather report reminds us that this is colder than normal but what is the norm? It could be 28°C by the end of March and summer over with by May, who knows what is in store for 2013. Magnificent cotton flannel shirting in two colours, both are very soft.a) Crushed strawberries b) Pale crushed chestnut (which could be painful)


✿✿ ArFACotton elastane needlecord shirting/trousering not unlike fabrics seen on the catwalk for designers like Burberry. This is really soft and if you are looking on the web, I know Caroline may struggle to get the photo to give an exact colour representation but this is a nice light beige/creamy colour, it will go with a lot of stuff.


B✿✿ Baumgartner

There is a certain element of boldness about the men who leap from some where around the moon and fall to earth making a soft landing or walk on wires over the Niagara Falls. I would say they must be part crackers. You don’t have to be part crackers to buy this very bold black and white check boucle jacketing. It is an approximately 2” square check and the chunky yarns are slightly proud of the cloth giving it a boucle appearance. It is a mixture of wool polyester and acrylic, has a reasonable weight. Picture on the back page.


✿✿ BaSKet CaSe

A cotton/linen/viscose chunky basket weave suiting. Beloved of fifties movies.


✿✿ BattLeSHiPFinely woven polyester, with a synthetic rubber coating. It is completely waterproof. I can’t believe it’s entirely breathable; however it is in a fulsome battleship grey colour.

✿✿ Big SoftySoft as you like polyester fleece with an ever so slight shaggy pile. Then there is the colour, a beautiful shade of azure blue, upon which is printed or even embossed teddy bear shapes. The teddy bears are in traditional teddy bear colours with a hint of pink and to show that this could be a night sky there are clouds and shooting stars in white, there are also little rainbows. It’s very much an Ahh! sort of cloth. A child’s dressing gown fabric. There is not a lot of it. Picture on the back page


✿✿ BLaCK Suiting BonanZaWe somethines seem to have a void of black suiting fabrics but here we have a selection of 3 very different types.The hour60in (152cm) Black Knitted fabric 70% wool 30% nylon mid weight jersey which will certainly accentuate the positive and may eliminate the negative.


A New STArT60in wide poly/wool/viscose/lycra a wonderful fine gabardine suiting in black. Everything you need and then some.


revereNTiAl60in wide poly/wool/lycra suiting with a very soft finish which helps with the lovely draping qualities. It comes in deepest black.


✿✿ BLuSH60” wide, polyester corduroy. Now I do understand that you can’t have polyester corduroy, but you can have a cloth that looks like cord, which is made from polyester, that’s what this is. A fairly chunky cord but soft, in a very light taupy brown. It drapes beautifully and has a very soft hand. It was made for lightweight jackets I understand, so maybe that’s what you would do, maybe cushions or teddies? It will wear and bounce back because it’s polyester. Cheap enough at £4.00mtr.

✿✿ BwHnaA fabulous herringbone weave, cotton trousering in a very dark navy blue. It has been very lightly gone over to give a wonderful hand and very good drape; another trousering from Gurteen.


✿✿ BZZA polyester voile blouse fabric in black with 5mm wide white and gold horizontal stripes. Looks a little bit like an anaemic bee; perhaps more black than a bee but when you’re in a jam keep going. Wonderfully floaty.


C✿✿ CanvaS

Heap strong but not too heavy plain unbleached cotton canvas.


✿✿ CavaLry twiLLElsewhere I described a cotton canvas in olive green (Platoon), this pure new wool cavalry twill suiting is in a similar but slightly lighter olive green colour, perhaps the two would go together, but would you want so much olive green. There is drab and there is too much drab, a little good, too much not so good. A glorious Yorkshire woven cloth of yesteryear. Magnificent, picture on the back page.

However these arrived here from a maker in a far of land, originally exported from here it was sent there to be made up but then he went bump the cloth was then brought back here. What a tangle web we weave.c) A dark brown which has a silvery top to the raised portion of the cord e) A pale gold.

D✿✿ dÉjà vu

You may remember this cotton jersey. It was very popular and we have found some more. This is a cotton jersey with an off white ground onto which are printed cerise and taupe and olive flowers. Picture on the back page.


✿✿ denimThis is in black, not completely black because it’s made up of black and cream yarns in fairly traditional denim weave. It is about half the weight of the heaviest of denims, which is usually 14oz and needs a bucking bronco to break it in. It is made from cotton polyester and lycra and therefore will wear quite differently and it has a certain elegance to it.


✿✿ do you rememBer HoLLy HoBBie? Do you remember Holly Hobbie? Some of the designs in our new cotton poplin range just remind me of things I had when I was a child. This range of wider cotton poplins are all printed onto a lovely quality cotton poplin which will make up into beautiful garments or craft products and is soft enough for bedding, What? I hear you cry, I realise you are limited to single use with the width. The designs are bright and cheerful with lots of colours. They are a one off, I hope you like them.

A fine, soft cotton dress velvet in a dark mustardy gold.

This is a lightweight jersey which has a burn out which we have tried to show on the picture on the front cover. There are areas within the pattern which make it a little see through. It is really a very nice fabric which will make classy floaty tops which will go with anything; denim, chinos, corduroys. One of those dress up or down type patterns.


✿✿ fine waterProofThis is all we have left of these now and that is only because we found another bit of this colour. Very fine lightweight polyester cloth in airforce blue, it has a breathable coating applied to one side making it a very pliable, soft cloth. If you want to cover a sleeping bag or repair an old down jacket and you want it to be waterproof, then this is the cloth to do it with.

✿✿ fLeeCedEx Barbour Fleece in stone.a) Stone


✿✿ fuStian60in wide fustian, I don’t think anybody makes fustian these days but there was a mill about 20 miles from here who probably made the finest fustians ever, perhaps they still do, I should find out. These cloths are of that ilk.a) Damson - coloured 12 whale needlecord not as fine as the other needlecords we have had in the past, this has a lot of meat in it, i.e. an awful lot of yarn in this cloth. We only have 20mtrs.b) Goldensand - As above but is a beautiful golden sandy colour.


G✿✿ gO FOrth AND multiPly

This cloth seems to have grown since I last saw it. I thought it was 60in wide, but it is more like 66in wide, which is a bit of a bonus if you have enough room. It is stretch denim, a traditional denim weave but finer than normal, so it is not a great clodhopping 14oz denim. This cloth is a little bit more than two thirds of that weight with just enough stretch to make it comfortable. Beautifully made £7.00mtr.

✿✿ givE uS A SWirlA soft viscose dress fabric in white with a myriad of small flowers all arranged in rows across the cloth. The size range is from small to a little bit bigger, nothing large. They come in tones and shades of pinks and peaches, a bit of blue and a bit if this and that. All very decorative and very pretty.


✿✿ grrrA very silky polyester with more than a little substance, although quite light. There is an element of a so called animal print in the all over design. It comes in two colourways:a) browns, greys, beige and blackb) black, grey, pink and red

Silky soft, fine cotton Italian lawns, light as a feather with lots of lovely colour.

These are two differently designed wonderfully soft silky polyester cloths, I know it’s a bit of a daft thing to say, but you don’t know these things from silk these days, except that silk is extremely expensive and a natural fibre.a) An all over colourful design with amongst other abstract goings on is a paisley print and comes in black, orange, pale blue, pale turquoise, pale lemon, and green. These are pretty much in equal amounts. It is a very colourful exquisite design.b) A sort of poppy design but not in red. The colours are oranges, mauves, lilac, blues, on a pale background colour that is twixed fuchsia and cerise. Whilst this is an all over design it’s reasonably large and quite sprawley.


✿✿ imagineStretch solid body polyester lace in glorious aubergine. Quite dense and weighty and very wearable.

A polyester silk satin in cream with an intricate woven self-colour variable stripe pattern. Butter soft.


J✿✿ jaSon Bourne

Now you see this then you don’t. A soft open weave ivory cotton muslin with dense satin spots randomly woven in. Picture on the back.

This is an interesting fabric probably made for leggings but would make a dazzling top, it is a silvery grey metallic stretch ‘denim’ made from cotton with polyester and lycra. Almost a jersey in construction, light weight, soft, comfortable cloth.


M✿✿ mAliNKy

A floral satin dress fabric which is very soft, it comes in a fabulous multicoloured floral pattern it has quite a large repeat but there is enough going on for that not to matter. This will make a fabulous dress or even one of those slinky gowns in which you can pose over a chaise longue. In fact most of this fabric was bought by a lady who is making up such items for the Arab market.

A white cotton/linen dress fabric with an all over black abstract ‘floral’ print.


✿✿ mArmitEYou will either love this or you won’t. I do as it is quite unusual ,it is a discharge printed cotton polyester velour fabric. The background is a chestnut mushroom colour with a wonderful flower design in pinks oranges and more. It is lovely and soft and will be comfy to wear. Picture on the back page.


✿✿ miSS SAigONA softly textured polyester dress fabric in a dramatic, fairly large abstract design.


✿✿ miStyItalian cotton lawn in a lovely misty floral design ina) Mauve/lilac/mustard/pale/yellow/grey on a cream ground. b) Pale blue/dark blue/peach/pale/orange/green on a cream ground.They have an almost ethereal quality. The cloth itself is divine you can see them on the back page.


✿✿ mOlESKiNThree finest possible British cotton moleskin fabrics ina) Navy b) Camel c) Very dark brown


✿✿ mAiSEy1 metre wide or 39in, cotton guipure lace. I did that just to attract your attention, it’s not guipure lace but a very good imitation. It is white with a traditional floral “Victorian” design, which in those times might well have been used for sleeping hats. You don’t see a lot of this, it’s not stretch lace it’s rigid.


✿✿ muStiQuEWe still have this in as we bought some much of it, maybe that was silly but it really is a super quality polyester chiffon printed in Germany by the best transfer printers. Originally named Mustique because one can imagine floating around on the Island in something made up in this. Oh to Dream! There are still 2 colours available so maybe those who have not already been persuaded can be this time.

✿✿ now Here’S a tHingNot seen since the halcyon days of crimplene, this modern day version of that all-purpose, hard wearing, indestructible suiting cloth sits before me. Made in polyester/lycra with lots of stretch it comes in dark clerical grey. Retro.


O✿✿ oneSie

All the rage apparently, we have 3 fleecesa) Pretty polyester fleece in a dark brown with an all over spot print in white, pale orange, pale green, pale turquoise, darkish red and cerise. The spots are about half a centimetre in diameter and whilst it’s quite soft it is suitable for children’s outdoor wear but not to be used as a be all and end all to keep the cold out.b) Navy – Plain Mid Navy c) White – Plain White

In my time as a producer and purveyor of cloth it’s fair to say I haven’t come across anything that is quite like this 60in wide, fairly soft but substantial brushed cotton. Upon it is an artist’s impression of what chaos must be like, if you could in fact draw chaos. Lots of shapes, leaves, flowers, there looks to be half a teapot, and a little bit of checkerboard. All this in colours ranging from black, through brown, orange, yellow, turquoise, mid blue and mustard. It is a stunning cloth but I am not so sure what you might do with it, a big shirt perhaps..


✿✿ PermanenCeFine polyester cheesecloth in dark cream with a crease/pleated finish. Lovely hand and drapes well.


✿✿ PLain dyed PoPLin100% superior quality cotton poplin ina) Red b) Purple c) Claret d) Emerald


✿✿ PLatoon60” wide very superior cotton canvas in olive green. There must be an army somewhere that dresses in this colour, but who would wish for a cloth as tough and yet as soft as this is for a uniform. You will make outstanding beautiful items from this cloth.


✿✿ Printed CordWe have had this before and it proved very popular, I know many of you were disappointed so maybe you will be happy we have found some more, maybe you have moved on. This is not corduroy but a bedford cord, which is pretty much like corduroy except it hasn’t had the raising of the ribs in the cord.

✿✿ PoPLin - wHitePure and simple 60” wide 100% white cotton poplin in brilliant white and nearly of a quality produced in this mill umpteen years ago. We will endeavour to get more of this cloth expensive though it is as is in the future it is likely to be made in China and the quality will not be as good by any stretch of the imagination.

✿✿ PS. i Love youA black horizontally pleated satin, the sort of stuff when used ‘tother’ way up, longitudinally, makes skirts that both cling and swirl and could almost be a one size fits all situation. Having said that don’t scrimp, otherwise the pleats the pleats won’t be pleats will they. It could almost be something for those “ I want to be alone” moments with a fag, a cup of tea and Coronation Street.


✿✿ Pure wHite miSCHiefBeautifully made fine cotton crépe in pure white. Soft as the proverbial. Gorgeous. Exactly the same fabric as we had before except this is pure white.

60” wide faux fur coating fabric in chocolate brown which has been quilted to a polyester peach skin finished backcloth. The backcloth has then been embroidered and embellished with rows of tiny shiny sequins. Described as being reversible, who knows, you would probably want to wear the fur on the outside all the time but if you didn’t you would have something that had an evening appearance. Very different and special.

✿✿ rED iS thE COlOurThis red cotton drill has been given a flame-retardant backing. It doesn’t do anything special apart from not burning. It doesn’t make a great deal of difference to how the fabric behaves except, perhaps, to make it a tad stiffer than it otherwise would be. It is still quite malleable though but being cotton and a drill it is obviously very strong.

A softer than down cotton baby cord shirting in burnt orange. Gets you all of a quiver, doesn’t it?

✿✿ Start aS you mean to go on65% viscose/20% polyester/15% linen dress fabric in black, which has a random all over permanent creasing. It doesn’t look creased in the sense that it has all been scrunched up, these are designer creases and in its way it is attractive. A dress weight cloth with a little bit of open weave so there is a bit of a see through element about it so a liberty bodice wouldn’t go amiss. Rather nice.


✿✿ StretCH veLvet60” wide, 98% cotton with 2% Lycra velveteen dress fabric in dark chocolate brown a reasonable weight even though it is quite fine, perfect for trousers skirts and jackets with the Lycra to give it the extra comfort.

60” (152 cm) wide polyester crepe de chine in a gloriously colourful floral design. Very soft and drapey. A good hiding cloth.


✿✿ tax Haven

Woven polyester satin in white with an abstract ‘tropical’ floral design in purple/pale gold. The cloth has a lovely hand and is quite substantial.


✿✿ too muCH of a good tHing

Elsewhere in the catalogue you will see a list of woollen coatings that you have been told about before and maybe even seen, there are one or two more here that you haven’t heard of or seen.a) Double Feature - Brown - A herringbone weave one side and plain the other in browns with a backing being of a heathery nature in either in greys and greens on the other. It is obviously reversible and not too heavy despite being two thicknesses. It is the sort of cloth that you make shooting jackets out of and I suspect that is what it was made for, knowing where it was made.b) New Tweed - A very fine tweed in blues and greys, more of a jacket weight than coating. Picture above.Again on the expensive side but it doesn’t come along everyday.


✿✿ tHe roSeA rather beautiful all over rose design in a viscose acetate brocade-like cloth in shdes and tones of taupe, grey, pink and brown with red roses. Exquisite. Bette Midler’s version is best!!!

We have had these for some time under many different guises; the names can confuse us as much as you but the last was a duplicated name so caused no end of bother, hence a new name. These 60” (152cm) wide cloths did arrive from a maker of fine gentlemen’s suitings and because they aren’t suitings I assumed they were linings. Not necessarily. Some were used for waistcoats, others for the backs of waistcoats and - wait for it - travelling dressing gowns and of course exceptional linings. They would make the perfect linings for the wool coatings above to make an exceptionally expensive looking coat.a) Almost Black – This has a black warp and weft but there is a bronze yarn in the warp which makes a tiny pin dot pattern so therefore the fabric doesn’t look jet black, it is not brown but it is not pure black.b) French Navy - with a textured weave pattern.c) Silvery - silvery beige with stripes 4.5 cm repeat.


✿✿ WAtErPrOOFSHere is a little selection of so called waterproof fabrics, apparently we are not able to call anything waterproof any more, since once you sew it you might alter the structure of the thing if the coating becomes impaired. Notwithstanding all else these are as near to waterproof as you will get and do repel water. All are 60” (152cm) wideb) Hasslehoff - A pale olive/khaki extremely strong breathable treated polyester with an almost Barber like finish.c) Kit - A smooth backed polyester fabric in navy with a water repellent treatment to the other side.d) Knightrider - Another softly sanded polyester canvas with a lightweight breathable water repellent coating to the reverse. This is a deep olive green.All these have featured in an expensive brand of jackets.


✿✿ WhimSiCAl45” (114 cm) wide soft, fine cotton lawn in navy with an all-over printed fancy spot design.


✿✿ WOOl COAtiNgI think it’s fair to say that there will not be a repeat as these cloths have been made in this country. What comes from abroad now I am not certain of but I do know that these mills are no longer in existence. So if you want to preserve a bit of history, do your bit.b) Bright Spell - Flannel wool coatings in a melange of many greens, producing a dark lime colour. Is this a cause for excitement or what? Beautiful cloth.g) Brown Flannel - A pure new wool medium weight flannel, a coating weight but of a totally different character to the one above. Gorgeous cloth in a dark, heathery infused brown.h) Navy Flannel - And as above but in navy blue
