by Alicia Dachs

Rnd 1 Make 4 ch, join with a sl st in 1st chain ( this makes a ring )

Rnd 2 ( 1 dc in ring, 4ch ) 5 times – sl st in 1st dc

Rnd 3 ( 1 dc, 3 htr, 1 dc ) in each 4 ch loop, sl st in 1st dc

Rnd 4 Make 1 dc around the dc from rnd 2 ( ie bring the crochet needle from the back of the work,

over the top of the dc and then put the needle down behind the work ) , make 4 ch then a dc around

the next dc of rnd 2, then make 4 chain etc finishing with a dc in the 1st dc. ( You will still have 5

loops but the centre of the flower has now been made prominent ).

Rnd 5 ( 1 dc, 1 htr, 3tr, 1 htr, 1 dc ) in each of the 4 chain loops, not forgetting to sl st in 1st dc at the

end of the row.

Rnd 6 Make 1 dc around the dc from rnd 2 ,make 4 ch then a dc around the next dc of rnd 2, then

make 4 chain etc finishing with a dc in the 1st dc

Rnd 7 ( 1 dc, 1 htr, 3tr, 1 htr, 1 dc ) in each of the 4 chain loops, not forgetting to sl st in 1st dc at the

end of the row.

Rnd 8 Make 1 dc around the dc from rnd 2 ,make 4 ch then a dc around the next dc of rnd 2, then

make 4 chain etc finishing with a dc in the 1st dc

Rnd 9 ( 1 dc, 1 htr, 5tr, 1 htr, 1 dc ) in each of the 4 chain loops, not forgetting to sl st in 1st dc at the

end of the row.

Repeat the last 2 rows as often as you like – not forgetting to increase by 2 tr with every successive

“petal” row

2 Knitted Poppy Patterns Use an 8 ply red acrylic wool. The size of needle you choose will determine how big the poppy will be, but we recommend 3.75mm or a size that will produce a poppy around 10 cm in diameter. If you have any problems with any of the techniques in the poppy patterns, and you have access to the internet - you will find lots of tutorial videos on youtube. 1. Easy garter/knit stitch pattern for beginners Colour A Red (one ball will make a lot of poppies!) Colour B Scrap of Black or a black button Body of Poppy Using Col A cast on 120 stitches. Rows 1-4 Knit Row 5 Knit 3 stiches together across the row(40 stiches) Rows 6-9Knit Row 10 Knit 2 stitches together across the row(20 stitches) Rows 11-14 Knit Row 15 Knit 2 stitches together across the row(10 stitches) Cut yarn leaving a tail of about 20cm Thread tail through yarn needle and slip all the remaining live stitches onto the yarn tail and pull tight. Pull around into a circle and then mattress stitch (or use whatever stitching you normally use) to seam for an invisible seam. Sew in ends. Centre of Poppy Using B, cast on 16 sts. Cast off. Coil into a tight spiral and sew base to the centre. Or use a black button with 4 holes and sew to centre of poppy.

THE  SIMPLEST  CROCHET  POPPY  (just  2  rounds)

This  pattern  only  uses  two  rounds.    It  is  quick  to  make  and  one  of  the  simplest  patterns  I’ve  found.    I  use  US  terms.    For  those  who  are  used  to  UK  terms  here  is  the  conversion.    A  stitch  guide  is  at  the  end,  but  you  can  also  use  youtube  videos.

With  Black  (US  Terms)    Make  a  slip  knot  and  ch  2  Into  the  first  ch:    make  7  sc  Join  with  sl  st  into  your  first  sc.    This  completes  the  circle  (making  8  sc  stitches  in  your  1st  round)  Cut  the  yarn  and  pull  through,  leaving  the  tail    With  Red    Secure  the  red  yarn  by  making  a  sl  st  into  the  next  stitch  along  from  where  you  ended  the  black.  Ch  3,  3  trc  into  the  same  stitch  (where  you  secured  the  red  yarn)  In  the  next  stitch  along:  3  trc,  ch3,  sl  st  This  completes  your  first  petal  (ch3,  3trc,  3trc,  ch3)    *Now  sl  st  into  next  stitch  and  you  are  ready  to  begin  the  second  petal    Ch3,  3  trc  into  the  same  stitch  3  trc,  ch3  and  sl  st  into  the  next  stitch  and  your  second  petal  is  done.+    Repeat  *  to  +  two  more  times  to  complete  4  petals    Cut  the  yarn  and  pull  through.    Your  tail  will  be  sitting  on  the  front  of  the  petal.    Using  your  hook  pull  the  red  tail  through  to  the  back  and  tie  off  with  the  black  tail,  which  will  tighten  up  the  black  circle  as  well.    Leave  all  four  tails  hanging  from  the  back.    They  will  be  used  to  secure  the  petal  to  a  stem.
