Immage 1: A Cosmetic Store
Before you enter the store:
Does the store draw you in? If so, how? It drew me in indeed. It was painted
in blue in the front (my favorite color), and was the only one with a table
selling products outside the store as well.
Is the door open or closed? It was closed all the time
How does it make you feel? Since the weather in my country is hot, having a
closed-door store means
that it has air-
conditioned, which gives
it exclusivity among
others.
How big is the sign
lettering and in what
font? I would say about
average. Although the
contrast in colors (white
and blue) gives a peculiar
sight of the store.
Environment
What was the color scheme of the store? How does this affect you? It was
pretty neat, actually. It had basic colors inside and outside. They had pale
colors inside and strong colors outside. Nice contrast, I must add.
What type of floor does the store have? How does this affect the
environment? It was mainly made of white tiles. Very elegant and simple.
How high is the ceiling? How does it feel? I’d say it’s about average height. It
doesn’t give the sensation of anxiety when facing very high ceilings.
How bright lit is the store? How does this affect you? All the lights were
turned off but some special lights located above some selves. Brightness by
artificial lights was not really necessary given the fact that it was very sunny,
and everything was clear.
How loud is the environment? Very. The store is located in a plaza, so there
were many other stores with garage sales (loud music included)
What is causing the noise? There were many stores with garage sales. Ergo, a
lot of people were outside walking and talking at the same time, not to
mention the loud music coming out from a music store.
Is there music playing? If so, does it fit the environment? There was. But
unfortunately, it didn’t fit the environment.
Is the store warm or cold? It was perfect! Given the fact that we had around
100°F outside the store, and inside we had AC, it was heaven!
Is the store crowed with merchandise? Or is it sparse? It was crowed! It was
so crowded that they even had to put some products outside the store!
Does the store have a distinctive smell? It does. Very sweet perfumes. Not
bad at all, I must add.
Where is the cash register located? At the very end of the store. People have
to struggle a bit to have access to it, actually.
How visible is the store security? Very!! And I think it’s one of the main
issues, at least for me. It was located in the very entrance, carrying a gun with
a very intimidating face.
How long do you want to stay in the store? Depends. Since it represented an
“oasis”, it gives me the sensation of well-being. But the guard at the entrance
is very annoying, so it makes me want to leave the place.
Does the environment influence the perceived value of the merchandise? I
think so. Sometimes I thought to myself: “This store does not belong in this
place”. The place was way too chaotic for a store like that.
Personnel
How long does it take before a sales person initiates contact? Not too long.
Almost immediately after someone enters the store.
Does the salesperson have a script to follow with each costumer? I think so.
I guess they were trained to follow a code/script with each costumer
Does the salesperson treat different costumers differently? Yes, they do. It
depends whether you are a guy of a girl (generally, they treat girls better),
and it depends also on how you look.
What it the ratio of salespeople to costumer? I would say 3:1
What age and gender are the employees? All of them were women,
between 20 and 30 years old.
Are the salespeople using the store products? I guess. Didn’t notice to be
honest.
Do the salespeople have a uniform? Yes. All of them. Red and white
uniforms.
Do the salespeople match the stores image? I think they do. We can
recognize them when entering the store. They are “bounded” to the brand
somehow.
Products
What is the first product that you notice? Lipsticks
Is there a central display table with featured product? Yes, and not only one
but several tables.
Where are items that are “for sale” located in the store? Pretty much
everywhere… from the entrance to the very end of the store
How are the products arrange? By function? By price? By color? By function.
The store was divided depending on the functions of each one of their
products.
Are there free samples or demonstrations? There were free samples of the
main products
What products are at eye level? Only perfumes… the rest were either too
low or too high for the eye
What items in the store are in the least accessible location? Facial cream.
They were locked in a shelf.
Where are the most and least expensive products located? The most
expensive was located in the very back of the store, and the least expensive
hanging from a shelf in the corridor.
Are the prices of the products easy to find? No. Actually none of the
products had prices on them. I had to look for a salesperson and ask them
personally
Are there impulsive items near the cash register? Actually they were. Some
of them were very funny and cute hangers
Customers:
Are most costumers alone or with someone else? What is the relationship?
Mostely, they are with someone else. It seems that they are relatives
What is the average age and gender of the customers? Mainly girls, from 25
to 35 years old.
When a customer enters a store, do they tend to walk in the same path or
direction? They do. The store is organized in such a way that all the
customers follow the path.
How long do customers stay in the store? About 15 minutes
Do costumers touch the products? Is this encouraged? They do, but it
depends of the product. Some products are prohibited to touch.
Do most costumers appear to be on a mission? Or they are browsing? They
all seem to be browsing
What percent of costumers purchase products in the store? I would say
about 50%.
Immage 2: A bar
Before you enter the store:
Does the store draw you in? If so, how? It has this beautiful sign “Left-
handed bar”. So I was curious and went in.
Is the door open or closed? It was open.
How does it make you feel? It was a welcoming fact, actually. When a door is
open, it means that everyone is welcome there.
How big is the sign lettering and in what font? I would say about average. It
was painted in yellow with nice hand-writing.
Environment
What was the color scheme of the store? How does this affect you? Not
bad. It had a yellow color as the standard color of all the store. Yellow is my
least favorite color, but it gave the place a nice touch.
What type of floor does the store have? How does this affect the
environment? Wooden floor. Very elegant and simple.
How high is the ceiling? How does it feel? I’d say it’s about average height.
I’ve seen places with higher ceilings
How bright lit is the store? How does this affect you? It was very bright. It is
a two-story bar with an open space, so the light comes inside pretty much at
all times.
How loud is the environment? It was ok. It had music since it’s a bar, but not
too loud, so people can always speak without shouting.
What is causing the noise? There are many bars around there as well. All of
them have music inside.
Is there music playing? If so, does it fit the environment? There was. It was
ok. The music selection was also ok.
Is the store warm or cold? It was perfect! Downstairs the temperature is a
bit hot, but in the upper level there’s AC, so if you feel too hot, you can go up
and refresh yourself.
Is the store crowed with merchandise? Or is it sparse? Since it’s a bar, all
you can see are tables where to sit and the bar itself where you order drinks.
Does the store have a
distinctive smell? Not
really.
Where is the cash
register located?
Where the bar-tender
is. I don’t think there’s
a special place for it.
How visible is the
store security? There
wasn’t any! It is so
surprising because I expected to find someone who would take care of the
security, but there was no one.
How long do you want to stay in the store? A lot. It has cheap drinks and a
very interesting concept. People who work there are left-handed. They even
have pictures of famous people who are left-handed, including Ned Flanders
from The Simpsons.
Does the environment influence the perceived value of the merchandise?
Definitely. I think it has an added-value. The pictures in the wall are a very
nice touch
Personnel
How long does it take before a sales person initiates contact? As soon as
you approach the bar
Does the salesperson have a script to follow with each costumer? I think so.

that they were going to treat left-handed people better, but actually no.
What it the ratio of salespeople to costumer? I would say 4:1
What age and gender are the employees? Girls are in the med-twenties.
Boys are older than 30 years old
Are the salespeople using the store products? They have the logo of the
store in their shirts
Do the salespeople have a uniform? Yes. All of them. Black shirt and jeans

brand.

know. I guess that the most expensive drink is in the bar and the most
expensive food is in the kitchen
Are the prices of the products easy to find? They are all in the menu chart.
Are there impulsive items near the cash register? Yes. Some products
designed for left-handed people (can openers, etc.)
Customers:
Are most costumers alone or with someone else? What is the relationship?
Mostly, they are with someone else. They are mostly friends.
What is the average age and gender of the customers? Mainly guys. Most
to them are above their 30’s.
When a customer enters a store, do they tend to walk in the same path or
direction? They do. Since the bar is full of pictures of famous left-handed
men and women, they first look at the pictures before sitting in the tables.
How long do customers stay in the store? At least a couple of hours, having
drinks and eating.
Do costumers touch the products? Is this encouraged? They do, but it
depends of the product.
Do most costumers appear to be on a mission? Or they are browsing? Not

the doors though, they were very heavy.
How big is the sign lettering and in what font? The bar didn’t have the name
outside, but in the lobby. It had a decent size.

feel free to enter and leave the store without paying attention to it.

the country side, nice big windows and great food. Not to mention the band
