Here’s a series of more or less once‐monthly dialogues in place of a Wednesday lecture.

It’s not an interview, and nothing like a debate, but a wide‐ranging conversation on some aspect of consciously spiritual living. Unrehearsed and in the moment, building on one another’s ideas, something emerges that’s unforeseen, astonishing, and greatly useful to everyone within earshot. Called Soul Sessions, the next one happens WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, at 7:30PM, in a conversation with minister Jesse Jennings and retired airline captain and CLC member Lynn Rippelmeyer, who was the first woman to fly a 747 and to pilot a jumbo jet across the Atlantic. She was featured in a BBC documentary, part of which will be shown tonight; was named Woman of the Year in England in 1984; and her captain’s uniform is displayed in the Smithsonian Institution’s Air & Space Museum. Don’t miss this evening!

Grief recovery support group Are you grieving a loss? Perhaps a death, divorce, pet loss, or any other major life change? If so, and you would like to experience the support of a sacred group, come join Ruth Catalogna and Debra Morwood, meeting on the first floor of the Learning Center. If you would like, please bring your journal for reflection. There is no cost and donations may be made to CLC. Ruth Catalogna is a retired nurse and social worker. She spent most of her

career caring for elders in various settings. The last 12 years she spent caring for hospice patients at bedside and also served as in office support staff for three years. She is currently retired, but volunteers on many committees at CLC. Ruth has been a licensed practitioner for four years, and an active, sup‐portive member of CLC since 2004. Rev. Debra Morwood is a Board Certified Clinical Chaplain and Pastoral Counselor who is currently working part time for Bristol Hospice. For 17 years, she has been involved with spiritual care for hospice patients and their families. Debra has been a licensed practitioner since 2007, CLC youth minister since 2009, and member of CLC since 2003. The group next meets MONDAYS, JUNE 5 & 19, 7‐8PM. For more information, please e‐mail [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] or [email protected]@[email protected]

Sunday morning Meditations

“...Sit and rest and refresh your soul. Eat of the fruit and drink the wine. All, all is yours, and you are welcome.” —The Science of Mind text

Each week’s is led by a CLC practitioner, and lasts about 35 min‐utes, ending in time to comfortably get into the 11:00 celebration. There is music to enhance as you are guided into a restful state, and inspirational readings to tap into your spiritual center. Most sessions will end with a spiritual mind treatment based on the theme of the readings. SUNDAYS 10:15‐10:50AM, in the newly completed and dedicated Malené Njeri Meditation Space, upstairs

in the Learning Center. For more information, please e‐mail practitioner Darlene Everitt at [email protected]@[email protected] Project Teddy Bear

There’s still time to contribute to our collection of stuffed animals (new ones, ideally), which sit with us in the services then toddle off to new homes in the arms of appreciative children, via the Harris County Sheriff’s Office!

“Undie Sunday” Please bring donations of new teen‐sized underwear, socks and toiletries on or before SUNDAY, JUNE 4 for the kids of Montrose GracePlace (see more about this on page 9). Selia Qynn’s music is best described as contemporary acoustic folk. Her clear, smooth voice, heartfelt delivery, delicate guitar work, and introspective songwriting make her a truly captivating artist. In 1990, Selia was in the top 40 chosen in Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folk competition. By 1991, she had pro‐duced her debut album, The Moon & Me. “All Children Here,” from this release, won an award at the Spring Music Festival, and the Houston International Peace Festival adopted a line from that song, “healing the world from our own backyard,” as their 1993 event slogan and logo. In 1992, she released

The Surreal Life Adventures of Stella Quest, a concept album with a cast of characters who unfold in a series of colorful vignettes. In 1999, Selia released her third self‐produced CD, Charmed Existence, with 12 original love songs (and one Elvis tune). Selia’s latest album, Unreleased, is in fact finally released and is an eclectic collection of songs with a folk‐jazz to ballad flavor. Selia hosts a house concert series in her Backyard Habitat, certified by the National Wildlife Federation, where a number of our other favorite musicians perform. Selia makes her eighth visit to our Center, performing on Father's Day, SUNDAY, JUNE 18, at 9:30 and 11AM! selia.comselia.comselia.com

Empaths’ Explorations and Intuition Expansion

A compelling class and collaborative conversation for highly sensitive people

“Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain. But for empaths it goes much further. We actually feel other’s emotions, energy and physical symptoms in our own bodies without the usual defenses that most people have.” —Judith Orloff, MD

Please join us for three gatherings as we ask and answer questions such as: Why do loud parties and blaring music make me want to run away? Why do I feel drained after being with certain people? What are my intuitive gifts and sensitivi‐ties that I may be overlooking? What are the best ways to use my gifts and talents? When I feel emotionally challenged why do I run to the refrigerator for solace? How can I grow a “thick skin,” and do I want to? We will come with more questions to contemplate and we will leave with different ways to appreciate ourselves and

each other… and we will develop better ways of caring for ourselves as we serve and interact in our families and communities. It’s facilitated BY minister Marsha Lehman and happens three SUNDAYS, JUNE 4, 11 & 25, 2:30–4:30PM, in Katherman Hall (upstairs in CLC Learning Center). A suggested, not required resource is The Empath’s Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People, by Judith Orloff, available here. Cost is $35 to cover workbook and creating materials (consecutive pages given at each class), plus appreciative giving. Please sign up in Builders’ Hall or by e‐mail...

what we do

The CLC Children’s and Youth Services Department is devoted to celebrating the spiritual development of each child we teach. All age groups are involved in various activities, workshops, and special projects incorporating the teachings of Science of Mind. We strive to create an atmosphere of love and kindness in our words and actions toward each other and to recognize and honor the diversity of every person.

●●● Toddlers Toddlers Toddlers (up to age 3) are lovingly cared for by our toddler teachers. In their very artistically designed Discovery Room, the children are encouraged to interact and experience their world as only a toddler can. They are offered games, toys, books and other age‐appropriate activities in a safe, secure and loving environment.

●●● 333‐‐‐6 age group6 age group6 age group. Beginning around the age of 3, our toddlers are moved to the Ingenuity Room. This group begins to learn the basics of Treatment and the value of giving a smile and a kind word. Our creative teachers provide age‐appropriate instruction and activities.

teach our children well... We teach our children that God is Life — the Life within each of them and in all Creation — that all people are children of the One God, and therefore, are all brothers and sisters. ••• We teach that God is all‐inclusive and we are each created in the image of God — Good. ••• We teach that God is Love, and we honor God‐in‐all through love, not fear. ••• We teach that sin is simply a mistake and when we make mistakes, we are punished by them, not by God. ••• We teach that God is Spirit and present everywhere, that this Spirit is within us and speaks to us through our minds when we are willing to listen. ••• We teach that there are spiritual laws that must be understood and followed, just as we follow human laws. ••• We teach that religion is something to be used every day, not just on Sundays. ••• We teach that Religious Science is a religion that can be used at home, at school and at play; that since God is within us, heaven is also within us, that is we learn to live our lives in harmony with God’s Law, we live in heaven now. ••• We teach that keeping the mind focused on good causes a richer experi‐ence of life. ••• We teach that God is truth and beauty, peace and harmony; that as we grow to be more like God, our lives will be filled with health, happiness and success. ••• We teach that nothing is too wonderful to happen, nothing is too good to be true: everything is possible to God through me and you! —adapted from a work by Dorothy Quigley

Who do we help?

Buddy Backpack

“Megan” is a 10‐year old fifth‐grader who recently lost her father after his long illness caused by several massive strokes. Megan’s parents are much older than most of the other parents in Megan’s class. Megan’s mom works nights at Wal‐Mart, but this is not enough to make ends meet as she has a mortgage, and doctor and funeral bills. The family does not qualify for SNAP at this time; but were told to reapply in three months. With the help of the school staff, Megan was selected to be part of the Buddy Backpack program. Her mom was so relieved as this helps them tremendously. With plenty to eat on the weekends, Megan is now able to spend some time on fun outings with a mentor from the community. She has been able to open up about recently losing her dad. Her teachers report that Megan is doing well and is back to telling the class silly knock‐knock jokes. Her teachers are so happy to see Megan smile and participate in class discussion again. You can easily help feed children by contributing to Buddy Backpack. Details are above.

Huge thanks to everyone who served in this school year: Carol Stromatt, and Deb Barnes, Mardi Birch, Ruth Catalogna & Carthel Smejkal, Sean & Adriana Connelly, Alline Dawson, Kim Klaar, Marsha Lehman, Dolly Marshall, Michael Martin, Don Moore, Lorraine Sasser, Peggy Schneider, Richard Stromatt, and Sandy Tramel, plus Andy Sykes of Kroger Corp., and anybody we’ve missed — plus all the financial donors. This year we purchased $4,454 in food; prepared 800 bags containing 5,600 meals; and fed 266 children plus members of their families. You can help us build our reserve for the coming year by donating cash or Kroger cards or generic gift cards (only — we prefer no checks, please, and can’t use other store‐specific cards). To volunteer to help or with questions, please e‐mail BBP team leader Carol Stromatt at [email protected]@[email protected]
