Creative Problem Solving

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them“ - Albert Einstein

Problem : Crime rate in America In USA The crime rate increased many folds between 1960 till 1990. The government despite of many controls could not curb the crime. It became a big problem and major point to be debated in Parliament but there was no solution and the problem became bigger with every year.

Page 4: Creative problem solving

All of a sudden, surprising the govt, police and law authorities, the crime rate in 1991 dropped and continued the trend

-Strong Policing -Government Incentives to Poor - Strict Law

How the problem was solved?

till 1970, Abortion was illegal. Thus a poor girl who became pregnant without marriage had a very high probability to give birth to her baby, as legally it was not allowed and illegally the cost of an abortion was (way too high in 1960-70s).

These babies had a higher probability to become a criminal as they had a disturbed childhood or were abandoned by their mother. Other factors were also researched for a criminal behavior for e.g. Lack of maternal family etc.

By 1970 five states had made abortion entirely legal and broadly available: New York, California, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. On January 22, 1973, legalized abortion was suddenly extended to the entire country.

Within the first year, some 750,000 women had abortions in the United States (representing one abortion for every 4 live births). By 1980 the number of abortions reached 1.6 million (one for every 2.25 live births), where it leveled off. In a country of 225 million people, 1.6 million abortions per year

Analysis of Data by Economists

Approximately 4 Million less babies were born between 1970 – 1974

who if born would have reached the age of 17-21 in 1990 and Had High probability to become a criminal

Problem can be solved through ideas

"SHOW HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE HEIGHT OF A TALL BUILDING WITH THE AID OF A BAROMETER."

Solution 1: Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, lower it to the street, and then bring the rope up, measuring the length of the rope. The length of the rope is the height of the building."

Page 12: Creative problem solving

Solution 2:Take the barometer to the top of the building and lean over the edge of the roof. Drop the barometer,

timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, using the formula x=0.5*a*t^^2, calculate the height of the building.

Solution 3 : Take the barometer out on a sunny day and measure the height of the barometer, the length of its

shadow, and the length of the shadow of the building, and by the use of simple proportion, determine the height of the building."

Solution 4:"there is a very basic measurement method you will like. In this method, you take the barometer and

begin to walk up the stairs. As you climb the stairs, you mark off the length of the barometer along the wall. You then count the number of marks, and this will give you the height of the building in barometer units.

Solution 5 : Tie the barometer to the end of a string, swing it as a pendulum, and

determine the value of g at the street level and at the top of the building. From the difference between the two values of g, the height of the building, in principle, can be calculated..
