IMPACT INKARNATAKARURAL DEVELOPMENT

Promoting holistic rural development of communities

KEY INTERVENTIONSDespite most areas of Karnataka having access to water for agricultural purposes & also the requisite infrastructure, there are some regions that continue to suffer droughts. The situation is particularly bad in a few districts, including Bidar, Gulbarg & Raichur. Although there are a few areas in these regions that are irrigated, better agricultural infrastructure remains the need of the hour.

Taking a comprehensive look of the entire situation, HDFC Bank Parivartan decided to empower & develop communities in a sustainable manner. Under the Holistic Rural Development Programme (HRDP), the Bank focuses on: Natural Resource Management (NRM) Health & hygiene Skill development Education promotion

While managing the resources helped increase the ground water level, improved crop yield & made water available for irrigation, other initiatives focused on enabling the villagers to become entrepreneurial & financially independent. Through HRDP, the Bank is working to create sustainable communities in over 16 villages across 3 districts in Karnataka - thus reaching over 4,215 households.

DOUBLING INCOME THROUGH SUSTAINABILITYA farmer’s income mainly comprises income from wages, the net receipt of cultivation & agri-based activities. However, over 80% of farmers are small & marginalised. Hence, implementing strategies to improve agriculture-based income will bring prosperity to a majority of them. The programmes focus on: Reducing farm input expenses Training farmers Capacity building Increasing water availability Increasing productivity Supporting primary value addition to production & marketing. Under the Holistic Rural Development Programme (HRDP), the Bank introduced organic farming as an intervention that could reduce farmer input costs. Promoting vermi-composting & methods to naturally control pests also saved up on what would otherwise be spent on purchasing chemical pesticides. In addition, technological interventions including weeding & power sprayer equipment, pheromone traps to reduce pesticides & nanoparticle technology were introduced to reduce expenses even further.

Lack of information on sustainable agricultural practices was yet another hindrance that restricted their income growth. Hence, the Bank worked on creating awareness & knowledge enhancement. In this respect, exposure visits were organised to places featuring integrated farming systems & innovative interventions, as well as packaging places & storage halls. Workshops were organised where the farmers could learn from experts on subjects such as livelihood activities, bank credit, financial inclusion etc. The programme also worked on making water available to improve the cultivation capacity of the farmers.

Creating a conducive learning environment in communities

KEY INTERVENTIONSA SUPPLEMENTARY EDUCATIONUnderprivileged children are often forced to drop out from mainstream education, with many eventually gravitating towards abusive child labour. To break this chain, Parivartan has set up special tuition centres that provide supplementary education. These centres - over 15 of which were set up to cater to more than 560 children - have become a hub for recreational & educational activities.

Besides organising sports day & camps, the tuitions cover life skills training, exposure visits, as well as arts & craft activities. Additionally, to empower the children & help them raise their voice against wrong practices, Parivartan has facilitated the setting up of over 78 child rights clubs - providing a much needed platform to potential future leaders who could bring vital issues to the forefront.

ZERO INVESTMENT INITIATIVE IN EDUCATION INITIATIVE (ZIIEI)ZIIEI is one of the largest programmes to facilitate wide-scale, systematic implementation of grassroots innovations to improve existing systems & processes at minimal cost. In Karnataka, over 12,659 schools are now implementing innovative ideas. The ground-breaking initiative has thus far reached more than 6,52,174 students across the state through the 62,696 teachers who have been oriented under it.

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATIONAlthough the number of students in rural government schools is rising, the quality of education provided by them hasn’t improved proportionately. Students who have passed 5th grade find it difficult to solve simple mathematical problems of grades lower than theirs. In addition, their ability to read & solve problems also declines instead of improving with every passing grade.

HDFC Bank hence introduced Child Resource Centres (CRC) to support these children through remedial classes. Mainstream schools have also been provided with support through the Smart Class programme, whose teacher-friendly technology will help improve learning levels.

SKILL TRAINING AND LIVELIHOOD ENHANCEMENTUpskilling individuals to enable sustainable income generation

KEY INTERVENTIONSEMPOWERMENT THROUGH VOCATIONAL TRAININGSkill training is one of the most effective ways to improve the socio-economic condition of underprivileged communities. With an aim to make employment a reality for the youth from these communities, Parivartan has undertaken a focused programme of upskilling in Karnataka. The comprehensive skill training programme develops market-driven skills which is a major contributor to a candidate’s success. Executed with a scientific approach, potential candidates are sequentially selected through intensive community scouting, after which they're counselled & encouraged to be a part of the programme.

DEVELOPING SKILLS FOR THE BFSI WORLDWith an aim to train more than 1,000 students in the BFSI (Banking Financial Services & Insurance) sector, Parivartan started a skill development programme in Karnataka & other states. Boasting a robust curriculum & training model to enhance the success rate, the programme lasts for over 2 months for each batch with a 50% focus on domain skills & the other 50% on core attitudes & values. Industry scholars & academia are also invited to provide the best content to the students. To improve their chances of employment, the programme also supports placements, besides helping them prepare for interviews & offering migration support.

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH CMRCParivartan worked on creating economic activities through the Local Economic Activation (LEA) intervention, which comprises at least 50% women. Community Managed Resource Centres (CMRCs) were created under the programme to provide economic opportunities to the villagers. Forming federations/groups also made it easy for the members to seek financial assistance, credit & market linkages. In addition, livelihood enhancement programmes were introduced to diversify the livelihood portfolio of the households in target villages. Non-farm based opportunities - including backyard poultries, goat-rearing, chili powder processing etc - helped create alternative livelihood options.

LOCATION: BASAVAKALYAN BLOCK, BIDAR DISTRICTBENEFICIARIES: 130 FARMERS

THE CHALLENGEThe taluka of Basavakalyan in the northern Karnataka district of Bidar is among the 20 most underdeveloped in the entire state. Predominantly agrarian, its farmers were initially unaware of how groundwater can be conserved or recharged - hence resulting in low yields & inadequate water for their own livestock during particularly punishing summers.

OUR INTERVENTIONHDFC Bank’s HRDP hence stepped in to promote activities related to Natural Resource Management (NRM) in the village. A watershed committee was formed to oversee watershed-related activities & check dam sites were selected. The latter - 4 of which were eventually built in the villages of Kaudiyal, Nirgudi, Rola & Dasarwadi with a capacity of 600 cubic metres each - went a long way in restoring groundwater levels & preventing soil erosion. In addition, the environmentally sustainable lift irrigation system was also promoted among the farmers to help further boost their productivity. THE RESULTThe lift irrigation system turned out to be so successful that many farmers proposed the project be expanded in their own villages. Overall, the sustainable initiative benefitted 130 farmers across 4 villages within Basavakalyan, covering a total of 105 hectares of land. It also resulted in the average annual productivity of these farmers increasing from 1 quintal to even as much as 6 quintals.

UPSKILLING FOR A BETTER LIFE

STORIES OF PARIVARTAN

LOCATION: KAUDIYAL VILLAGE, BIDAR DISTRICTBENEFICIARY: HEMAVATI REDDY

THE CHALLENGE:Hemavati Reddy is a resident of the village of Kaudiyal in Bidar district. A mother of 2, she & her husband used to earn a measly Rs. 200 per day from seasonal agricultural labour work. Their low, dwindling income soon began having an effect on their children’s education & even nutrition. Not educated or involved in any village-related function, their opportunities for betterment were also severely limited & their future seemed bleak.

OUR INTERVENTIONOne of many progressive & sustainable development-based interventions carried out in the area, Parivartan began promoting Self Help Groups (SHGs) to help women like Hemavati earn a certain degree of financial independence. The members were taught chili powder & turmeric processing & provided with the necessary equipment in getting the business off the ground. In addition, weekly & monthly meetings were used to orient the members on savings & other crucial aspects of financial literacy.

THE RESULTCurrently one of the 10 members of the Hemreddy Mallamma Self Help Group, Hemavati thanked HDFC Bank’s initia-tive for significantly increasing her daily income. With her basic needs covered, she’s even considering taking up goat rearing to further supplement her income.

Prevention Through AwarenessRecognising its role as a leader in times of crisis like the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Bank has diligently worked towards spreading awareness on prevention measures among the more vulnerable sections of society, like those in the district of Gulbarga. These included awareness on mask-wearing, proper hand-sanitising & social distancing. The Bank even distributed 590 masks & 780 bars of soap in 16 villages within the district.

Employment During A LockdownThe residents of Gulbarga district often subsist off of daily wage labour due to a dearth of alternative opportunities - work that drives many of them to the cities. However, the current lockdown & the ensuing reverse migrations have left many of these workers virtually jobless & penniless. Parivartan hence worked towards ensuring local employment for these erstwhile labourers under the Indian government’s MGNREGA scheme.
