An illusion is something that is not what it seems to be. Illusions happen when one of the senses is

tricked in some way.

Today we are going to create paper toy illusions that can ‘trick’ people into thinking

that the pictures on them are moving or changing.

Which sense do you think we are ‘tricking’ today?

Think, pair, then share your ideas.

The first thaumatrope was invented in 1825, almost 200 years ago. The word ‘thaumatrope’ comes from the Ancient Greek language. It means ‘wonder turner’. This is because when you spin it quickly, it creates

the illusion that the images on either side seem to turn into one picture!

What do you think you see when these wonder

turners are spun?

The illusion is created because the two images spin together

so fast that your eyes tell your brain that they are just seeing one image – even though you

know you are not!

1. 3.2.

First, draw your design on both sides of the template. Make sure your pictures are in the correct

places so that it creates the right image when it is spun.

Now fold carefully along the dotted line, and stick the two circles together accurately.

Use a hole punch to create holes on either side of the circle. Make sure you line it up carefully so that the holes are in the correct

places.

Push an elastic band through the hole, and loop it through the

other end. Pull it tight.

Do the same for the other hole. Your wonder turner should now look something like the above

pictures.

Finally, wind up your wonder turner and create your illusion!

Plenary:

Sit next to someone who is not on your table or you do not normally work with. Ask each other these questions:

How does it work?

What part did you find easy?

What part did you find hard?

How could I improve it?
