Optical Illusions…
• Optical illusions happen when our brains wrongly interpret what we are seeing. This can happen in a number of ways. For example, on a hot day you might sometimes see a mirage which appears like a sheet of water. This is caused by the light from the sky reflecting off a layer or hot air, our brains think the blue colour of the sky is water!
How many animals can you see in this picture?
Answer:
• Look closely you should be able to see a rabbit and a duck.
Try to count the black dots
Answer:
• There are no black dots!!
If you focus directly on each dot, you'll see that all of them are white.
How to make a Victorian thaumatrope
ThaumatropeThe Thaumatrope is a Victorian toy made from a simple disk or card featuring a different picture on each side and attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled fast the card rotates on its axis and the two images appear to combine.
1. Get your materials ready
• You will need:
• Card (2 pieces) can be a cereal packet or pizza box.
• White paper – to draw our pictures on
• A pencil – to use as our spinner
• Glue stick – to glue paper to card
• Sellotape to attach our pencil
• Scissors
2. Cut card, make spinner and cut paper• Cut 2 pieces of card into equal square/rectangle
• Stick together using glue stick and place pencil in between, leaving space at the bottom for your pencil spinner. Use sellotape to secure pencil.
• Cut 2 squares of white paper of equal size that are smaller than your card
3. Take one of your squares of paper
2. Draw a picture on one side (e.g. Empty bird cage, a blank TV, a
fish bowl, an empty spiders web…)
3. On your other white piece of paper (keeping the same way up). Draw another picture on the other side (eg a bird, a fish, a spider, a person…).
4.Stick your white papers to either side of your card (try and make sure they are in line and not bumpy where the pencil is)
6. Start spinning!!
